Leopardstown 1.15 Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle (Grade 1) 3m
This renewal of the Christmas Hurdle looks very good and Gordon Elliott has a ridiculously strong hand in a bid to win it for the 5th time in 6 years. He has the top 4 in the market and I wouldn’t be surprised if any of the 4 won it but I will be siding with SIRE DU BERLAIS. He beat the re-opposing The Storyteller at Cheltenham and is 3lb better off with him here. He made his comeback run over the shorter trip which won’t see him at his best and he still won. He will be better again at 3 miles and should take some beating no matter how competitive this is.
The Storyteller looked better than even winning the Champion Chase at Down Royal and could still be the main danger despite being the outsider of Elliott’s 4 runners. I like Ronald Pump and Fury Road but think the selection is pretty good.
Catterick 1.30 Sky Bet Money Back As Cash Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 1m71/2f
I don’t usually find myself tipping a horse with a P and an F next to his name as recent form figures but THE RUSSIAN DOYEN looks to have a big chance here granted a clear round. He reverts to hurdles off a 3lb lower mark than his latest win and if he bounces back he looks a big danger to all here. He’s a horse that likes a bit of company so hopefully Lord Torranaga and Stainsby Girl set a good clip and he can get nicely settled just tracking the pace through. He will be delivered late.
Mick Maestro is favourite for Nick Kent. He beat a good field at Doncaster before falling when sent off favourite at the same venue last time. If he stays on his feet he is the main danger to the selection. If his jumping lets him down again then the mare Miss Heritage will probably finish second.
Leopardstown 1.50 Irish Daily Star Christmas Handicap Hurdle 2m4f
20 set to go to post in this ultra competitive handicap and with not many looking to be in top form, RAPID RESPONSE looks the way to go. He has been in good form over fences and is now rated 133 so running off 114 over hurdles you have to give him a solid chance. His hurdle form doesn’t jump off the page at you but if he runs anywhere near his chase mark he will go close.
The main danger for me is Arctic Light who will be much better at this trip and is in better form than most of these. Boher Cailin and at a bigger price Aircraft Carrier also made my shortlist and shouldn’t be too far away.
Leopardstown 2.25 Savills Chase (Grade 1) 3m
You won’t get many deeper Grade 1s this season than this race which has probably been helped by the travel ban stopping a few of these going for the King George. MINELLA INDO was a favourite of ours last season and I can see him being one of the best staying chasers again this season. He was chinned by that crazy run by Champ at Cheltenham or would be unbeaten at this longer trip over fences. His two runs to start the season have been easy wins to get him right for this and he looks to have an obvious chance.
A race of this quality of course has plenty of dangers including last years winner Delta Work who run a similar prep run before winning this a year ago. A Plus Tard has a bit to prove at this trip and there is no doubt he is a classy horse. The other who I never fully trust but looks to be in good form is Presenting Percy.
Limerick 2.45 Tim Duggan Memorial Handicap Chase (Grade B) 2m31/2f
A fiercely competitive handicap now and OFF YOU GO makes most appeal. This son of Presenting knows how to win and has ran two creditable races since returning over a trip shorter than ideal. Back up to 2 and a half miles now off a mark of 140 he looks a well handicapped horse. That is somewhat reflected in his price but at 7/2 I make him a play.
Articulum was an encouraging third to Crossed My Mind on return and that should leave him spot on for this. He looks the value bet at around 8/1. At a bigger price Goose Man has been somewhat overlooked at around 14/1. He hasn’t been seen since winning over hurdles at Down Royal back in 2019 but if fit and ready to go back over fences he could also take a hand.
Leopardstown 3.00 Ballymaloe Foods Beginners Chase 2m5f
This is a race I wouldn’t get too stuck into with THE BIG GETAWAY being the best horse in the race but didn’t impress at all first time up at the start of the month. He didn’t look at his best on his first chase start after getting impeded at the first and you can probably put a line through it plus if he needed the run he could be a lot better in this. Mullins has found a good race for him which he should win but just a few questions to answer to be going in the short price (which is why I’ve included him in the Mega Acca).
It isn’t a deep race and Cedarwood Road could improve to be the main danger as he did run in a very good beginners chase first time out. Sempo unseated last time but is probably best of the rest if bouncing back.
