Musselburgh 1.20 Betway Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m4f
This is a wide open handicap hurdle and plenty of them have questions to answer. I am going to take a chance on I’M TO BLAME to go well first time out. He has ran well fresh previously and has some of the best form in the book. He was last seen running well in the jumper bumper final but is a decent hurdler and chaser and if ready to go could outrun his generous odds.
The danger looks to be Netwtown Boy who ran well last time at the track to win and even though he isn’t the most consistent he will pose a threat if in the same form. Elf De Re was clearly expected to do better than he has done over fences and might also run well back over timber.
Tramore 1.27 Goodbye 2020 Hello 2021 Maiden Hurdle 2m5f
I’m quite surprised Minella Escape and Gorki D’airy are vying for favouritism here as I thought THE GETAWAY STAR had leading claims. She is a likeable mare who has posted two solid efforts over hurdles to date and with further improvement on the cards she could take a big hand here. She has experience on side against Gorki D’airy and that could prove the deciding factor for me.
Minella Escape fell on hurdles debut but was quickly back on track when second to Legacy Thor at Navan last time and can pose the biggest threat to the selection. It’s 18/1 bar those mentioned so hard to see anything else getting involved.
Musselburgh 1.55 Betway Hogmaneigh Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 2) 1m71/2f
Not the best race for the level and I was hoping Proschema was going to run for the Skeltons’ as he looked to have a decent chance in this field. It doesn’t look a tough race to win so MIRANDA has a good chance of following up her win at Ludlow last month even with a 7lb penalty. The 2nd that day has finished 2nd again to frank the form and she will still be expected to go close in this.
Raymond is on a 4-timer but may find this level a bit tougher without the conditional jockey and rise in the weights but is still likely the main danger.
Tramore 2.02 Tramore Medical Clinic Handicap Hurdle 2m5f
Any of about 4 or 5 have claims here so really hard to split them. SATIN SUN gets a tentative vote after a hugely promising effort at Thurles. She was subsequently pulled up at Cork last time but that was a deep race and she just faded out of it. She definitely has more of a chance here and remains open to improvement so should at the very least hit the frame for me.
Delirious Love heads the shortlist. He has also been below form of late but it’s that sort of race and his win at Fairyhouse in November was pretty good so with the yard firing he should give a good account of himself. Castlehume Gold is another to note and may well be worth an each way saver.
Musselburgh 2.30 Betway Casino Handicap Chase (Class 4) 2m7f170y
Wide open handicap again with plenty of these running well of late. OSCAR CEREMONY finished 2nd at Newcastle last time over half a mile shorter than this. He will improve for his comeback run and the step back up to this trip looks ideal as he was last seen winning at the track and at Newcastle prior to the season being curtailed, both were over 3 miles. If he is back to full fitness he will be right in the mix.
The main dangers look like the recent winners Brotherly Company and Eagle Ridge who may have more to come. Both Danboru and Buckled are non runners.
Tramore 2.37 Savills New Year’s Day Chase (Grade 3) 2m51/2f
This was meant to be the race of the day but it has cut up badly leaving the Gold Cup winner AL BOUM PHOTO an easy task. He won this last year beating the re-opposing Acapella Bourgeois by 6 lengths before going straight to the Gold Cup to retain his title. The Mullins yard are flying and I would be very surprised if he is beaten before being put away again for his Gold Cup hat-trick bid.
The field is no stronger than last year and I expect it to be the same finishing order with Acapella Bourgeois looking to be best of the rest again.
Musselburgh 3.05 Betway ‘Auld Reekie’ Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2m41/2f
This looks to be one of the best races on the card at Musselburgh and COOL MIX is the one I fancy here. He has been in great form this season and was last seen running over 3 mies in the race that Yorkhill won. He is back to his best trip 2m4f and goes off the same mark. He should be fighting out the finish if in the same vein of form and is decent odds.
The main dangers are Romain De Senam and Return Ticket, both I would expect big runs from in this. Red Risk is another not to be ruled out.
