Kempton 1.10 Ladbrokes Where The Nation Plays Handicap Chase (Class 3) 2m41/2
Evander is set to run at Wincanton on Saturday afternoon so as long as they pass a morning inspection he will be taken out here. Given he is the 9/2 second fav at the time of writing it will have a significant impact on the market. Erick Le Rouge is favourite but he was last seen falling at Wincanton in November last year and before that he finished last behind Imperial Prescence. I get he could be well handicapped off a mark of 137 but he wouldn’t be an idea of the winner for me and I’m happy to oppose at around 3/1.
PISTOL WHIPPED looks the value play here for Nicky Henderson. This horse is lightly raced for his age and I think he still has scope off a mark of 134. He will be held up so hopefully the likes of Erick Le Rouge and Princeton Royale take each other on up front and make this a real test as that will play into his hands. Dangers are headed by Smarty Wild who I felt should have won last time and Mahlervous who will go close if putting in a clear round. That is quite a big IF though.
Chepstow 1.25 Coral Finale Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m
This Coral Finale looks a cracker with some very exciting sorts in this field. None more so than NASSALAM who has won his two races since coming over from France by a combined 108 lengths. Despite those races being way below this level he couldn’t have done any more and you can see why he is right up there in the Truimph Hurdle market. He will handle the conditions fine and will take a lot of beating in this I suspect.
Paul Nicholls does well in this race with 2 of the last 5 winners and you always have to take note of his French recruits and I know they quite like Houx Gris so keep and eye on the market with him. The other danger has to be Adagio who has done little wrong this season and will surely be in the mix for a resurgent David Pipe.
Kempton 1.45 Ladbrokes Committed To Safer Gambling Handicap Chase (Class 2) 3m
A big turnout for this handicap chase and I’ve decided to take two against the field. TWO FOR GOLD like Evander has two entries on Saturday but will take his chance here as long as the meeting goes ahead. He was last seen pulling up at Newbury so you are taking a bit of a chance on him bouncing back but if he does he will be a danger to all. He rattled off 3 in a row last season and almost certainly still has scope off this mark.
The other horse that I’ve had to include is COO STAR SIVOLA for Nick Williams. This horse also comes here with a bit to prove having unseated at Aintree last time but I get the feeling he is coming back into form and a mark of 137 is too good to pass up in a race like this so I’ve got to include him. Commodore, Rocco and Slate House are all among the dangers (the latter is entered at Wincanton though).
Wincanton 2.05 Paddy Power Dipper Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) 2m4f
This race usually only has a small field but just 3 runners is a bit of shame. That said it will still be a very good race and a great chance for PROTEKTORAT to win at this level for the first time. He was top class at Cheltenham from the front and is clearly a much better chaser than hurdler. He gets into such a rhythm over fences and if in the same form he will be hard to keep tabs on even with Lieutenant Rocco vying for the lead.
The main danger is obviously Messire Des Obeaux who has been unlucky with injuries but on his day is a classy horse and it will be interesting to see what they do with him tactically to keep tabs on Protektorat. His reappearance win was very impressive to the eye so he might make a race of it.
Kempton 2.20 Dornan Engineering Relkeel Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m5f
This looks a decent renewal of the Relkeel. Last year’s winner Summerville Boy is back to defend his crown but I’ve got to be with MCFABULOUS here and he is my best bet of the entire day. The step up in trip counted against him in the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury last time and while he wasn’t disgraced in third behind two potential superstars he will enjoy going back down in trip here given how strongly he travels. He is still hugely exciting and I fully expect him to get back on track here.
Probably at the main expense of Yonevercall who returned as good as ever and ran a cracker when fourth to Paisley Park in the Long Walk last month. He will be fitter now so should run well. Summerville Boy was held behind the selection at Newbury and has his work cutout with this test suiting the favourite even more. On The Blind Side could also be contesting the places.
Wincanton 2.35 MansionBet’s Bet 10 Get 20 Handicap Chase (Class 2) 2m4f
This handicap usually attracts plenty of horses who run regularly at graded level and it looks really competitive as a result. EVANDER took a couple of races over fences to really get going but his 14 length win at Doncaster last time really showed what he is capable of and rightly has gone up in the weights significantly. This race does have a fair bit of pace in it but if he jumps as well as last time from the front he will be hard to peg back. He is one of my stronger bets of the afternoon.
Last year’s winner Gala Ball looks the main danger off a pound higher and the only reason he wasn’t the selection was that he is 11 now and could be vulnerable to younger horses like the selection. I still think Slate House is capable and he should bounce back at some point but he comes here with enough to prove.
Kempton 2.55 Ladbrokes Silviniaco Conti Chase (Grade 2) 2m41/2f
Cheltenham Festival hero IMPERIAL AURA has continued his progression over fences winning at Carlisle on return and then doing it impressively at Ascot last time. His jumping will always get his rivals in danger and even at a shade of odds-on in a good race like this he has to be the selection. He can continue to progress and this looks another step up the ladder here.
I’m a big fan of Master Tommytucker but I just feel like he’ll set it up for the selection here much like he did last time. It wouldn’t surprise me if Riders Onthe Storm was the one to give him a race as he will be tracking in behind you’d imagine and should be fitter for his reappearance when third at Cheltenham.
Chepstow 3.10 Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 3m61/2f
The Welsh Grand National is a race we love every year and even though it’s a shame they couldn’t get it on over Christmas hopefully all works out on Saturday as it’s a cracking race. I have picked two I like in this at nice each way prices. My top pick is THE TWO AMIGOS who finished fifth last year and runs off the same mark this time around. He has had two nice prep runs for this and stepping back up to this trip should see him go well and improve on last years effort.
The other one I am taking a chance on is LORD DU MESNIL who thrives at these trips on soft ground. He finished last season second in the National Hunt Cup at Cheltenham and I feel he would be shorter in the market if he didn’t finished well beaten in his prep run but that was over a much shorter trip probably to get him up to speed for this and to lower his mark (down 1lb). He will be ready to go and will be seen at his best over this trip. Truckers Lodge is a very good horse at these longer trips and in these conditions and his second last year looks great form but he is 16lb higher this year so it would be some effort to win it. The other two dangers would be Yala Enki who doesn’t often disappoint and Prime Venture who ran a cracker last year but can be inconsistent which is why I didn’t back him on this occasion.
Chepstow 3.10
The Two Amigos 12/1 each way
Lord Du Mesnil 14/1 each way
Kempton 3.30 Ladbrokes Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle (Listed Race) 2m5f
One True King is a horse on the up but I think this is a prime example of a horse being overbet on what he could be capable of rather than what we’ve seen. As you know we’ve been with him the last 3 times and while I see him as a horse with potential he is just too short here at 5/1 in the betting. This is ridiculously competitive and I’m surprise THE WHITE MOUSE is as big as 14/1. I can see her improving again and if she does that will put her bang there. Her attitude will see her in there pitching right until the end and at a double-figure price that’s good enough for me.
Everglow should be favourite for me as I think he’ll take a big step forward now he has his head in front. At a bigger price Amour De Nuit is also feared if putting in his best form with 7lb claimer Kevin Brogan booked. May well be worth including as a saver.
Wincanton 3.45 MansionBet Faller Insurance Handicap Chase (Class 3) 1m71/2f
A very good race to cap off ITV Racing with some very consistent handicappers. MOLINEAUX won this last year and off just 2lb higher he looks to have a good chance of going back to back. His second at Ludlow and third in a good race at Ascot have shown he is still running well off this mark and he should be right in the mix again. I wouldn’t want to see him get any shorter than 5/2 though as that looks about right.
The two dangers are Glajou (favourite at the time of writing) who has been bang there in all 3 chase starts and Gardefort who ran one of his best races for a long time at Ascot but I do question whether he can back it up at the ripe old age of 12. It’s 11/1 bar the rest and I’m struggling to suggest any of those 4 runners have it in them to win this.
