Ascot 1.50 Bateaux London Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) 3m
This renewal of the Reynoldstown looks wide open with it hard to rule any of these out. I am going to take a chance on FULL BACK who has won both starts at 3 miles plus and even though he had to be pushed along a bit further out than you would like last time he stays all day and that will be key at Ascot on soft/heavy ground. If stepping forward again he has a good chance at landing a hat-trick.
Hurricane Harvey is the main danger but I was put off by the penalty he has to carry due to his win at Doncaster. Sevarano comes out the best at the weights and is a top horse but has to prove it over this trip and is short enough in the betting.
Haydock 2.05 William Hill Rendlesham Hurdle (Grade 2) 3m1/2f
I backed ITCHY FEET at Cheltenham and seeing him unseat so early on was a real kick in the nuts! So much so that I haven’t actually backed him since. Luckily for me he hasn’t managed to get his head in front this season but he has shaped with promise and even when beaten 5 lengths by Imperial Aura he ran on really well. Dashel Drasher kept up the gallop last time and while on the day his backers would have been a bit frustrated I thought it was another encouraging effort. Back over hurdles now he has to be of serious interest and it’s no surprise to see him at the head of the market. I think he’s going to run a big race.
On The Blind Side has had a fruitful season and has to be respected. He looks the danger if running his race again. My gut tells me he’ll find one too good though and hopefully that’s the selection. Emitom is undoubtedly talented and back hurdling after a wind op is high on the list. Main Fact saw his winning run come to an end last time and might find it harder than we think to get back on track.
Ascot 2.25 “My Oddsboost” On Betfair Swinley Chase (A Limited Handicap) (Listed Race) 3m
JP McManus looks to have a strong hand in this handicap with previous winner Regal Encore heading the weights with JERRYSBACK plus a few others as well. The latter made his comeback run over a shorter trip after being out for 399 days and it was a decent run to finish 3rd. The step-up to 3 miles should be no problem as he stays further and he should be primed after that comeback. A mark of 142 could be generous and you can see why he is favourite at the time of writing (and being well supported).
Regal Encore loves a big handicap and is never far away and I expect the same again but top weight put me off a bit. I wouldn’t be surprised if JP McManus at least had the 1-2 and possibly even the 1-2-3. Newtide has been the one for support and he has had a wind op since that reassuring third on reappearance so you can see why he’s popular.
Haydock 2.40 William Hill Grand National Trial Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 3m41/2f
I was mightily impressed with NOTACHANCE last time. He travelled and jumped and even though it turned into a real test he always looked to have the required credentials to pass it and was firmly on top in the closing stages. A 7lb higher mark demands more but he is on the upgrade and is a horse worth keeping on side.
Sojourn chased home Sam’s Adventure in the Tommy Whittle and has to be respected on that form. He is lightly raced and like the selection his better days still lie ahead. He should run well but the selection was so impressive last time he has to get the vote. Enqarde is on a roll so also has to be respected.
Ascot 3.00 Betfair Cheltenham Free Bet Pot Builder Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 2m31/2f
This looks a very competitive race and initially I found two I quite liked at the prices and I was surprised they were both available at double-figure prices at the time of writing. SHANNON BRIDGE I thought would be 8 or 9/1 after his win last time where he won with plenty in-hand. This is a tougher race but based on the last run he has more to come now hurdling again and I think he will go very well with Harry Skelton on again.
The other I thought was overpriced was Albert’s Back but sadly he is a non runner now so I’ll go with just the one selection at a huge price. The main dangers are Arrivederci who is a very good horse but has been put up again and I think it might be enough. Stolen Silver has been running in some good company and the return of L’Ami Serge at this level is worth a market check too. Pileon is talented but frustrating and is also worth a mention.
Wincanton 3.18 Betway Kingwell Hurdle (Grade 2) 1m71/2f
Goshen has failed to fire since that heartbreaking unseat in the Triumph and on what we’ve seen this season you couldn’t back him. I actually expect him to be nibbled at as people take a chance on him returning to form but for me SONG FOR SOMEONE should be odds-on. Even with a 6lb penalty I think he is ahead of these. Goshen has too many questions to answer and while Navajo Pass beat Buveur D’Air last time that horse didn’t look himself and I think that form-line is questionable.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Friend Or Foe put up the most resistance. This horse has been running to a very good level and he could still have more to come. Looks a bit big in the betting so might be worth covering without the favourite (and still value without the second favourite too).
Ascot 3.35 Betfair Ascot Chase (Grade 1) 2m5f
Paul Nicholls has a strong hand in this race with Master Tommytucker and former winner of the race CYRNAME. The latter won this in 2019 before falling last year. He is rated the best horse in this race by 13lb and on his day he will take some beating. His Charlie Hall win was spectacular but he flopped in the King George at Kempton. Nicholls has said he was half asleep in that race and the cheekpieces he wears on Saturday have had a good impact and he should be as sharp as ever. He will take a lot of beating in this and I’ve put him forward as my best bet of the day.
Master Tommytucker is such a talented horse but his jumping does let him down from time-to-time. It will be interesting how it holds up in a race of this level and it wouldn’t surprise me if Nicholls saddles a 1-2.
