Newbury 1.50 Betfair Weighed-In Podcast Weekly Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 3m
A cracking race to start with any of 6 or 7 of these that could win. I’ve decided to side with the hat-trick seeking SIZABLE SAM as he is still learning his trade and as a result could be a fair way ahead of his current mark of 131. He was always doing enough to score at Wincanton last time and has gone up 7lb but I get the impression he will keep improving and if this sort of test doesn’t come too soon he is going to be massively competitive here.
Southfield Harvest is well regarded and this emphasis on stamina should suit. He deserves his place at the head of the market and looks the main danger. Es Perfecto, Palmers Hill and Silent Assistant all made the shortlist in a wide open handicap.
Market Rasen 2.05 Ballymore Sidney Banks Novices’ Hurdle (Listed Race) 2m41/2f
A small field for this race again with plenty of quality amongst it with all of these winning multiple races apart from Fast Deal. MINELLA DRAMA does look the best in here even if he does come with quirks. Stepping-up in trip should suit and the first time headgear looks to be what he needs after throwing away a Grade 2 last time out. He looks the one to beat and is my best bet of the day.
The main danger for me is Stoner’s Choice who is stepping up in grade but has done all that has been asked of him so far. Optimise Prime has impressed and looks best of the rest.
Newbury 2.25 Betfair Denman Chase (Grade 2) 2m71/2f
We saw Cyrname pull up at a short price at Ascot yesterday and Nicholls has another hotpot here with Clan Des Obeaux. He at least comes into this in better form but he was still a bit below par in the King George and will need to better that run to take this. I just don’t want to back him at odds-on and have decided to oppose.
LOSTINTRANSLATION pulled up in the King George for the second year in a row but we saw what he was capable of last season bouncing back to finish a heroic third in the Gold Cup. If they have him right again he could loom as a major danger here. I know connections are bullish and he looks the value play at 9/2! Kalashnikov has stamina to prove stepping back up in trip but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him run well.
Navan 2.47 Ladbrokes Ireland Boyne Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m5f
Gordon Elliott has dominated this race over the last few years and has a great chance again with FURY ROAD. He is held in high regard by the yard and his form looks rock solid. This trip looks to be no problem after he took a Grade 2 a Punchestown after being off for 247 days. He didn’t run that well over 3 miles last time but on previous form he is the one to beat in this.
Tiger Roll runs in this which is great to see but this will likely be in preparation for bigger things. French Dynamite is a good horse but I think the danger could be Beacon Edge who ran well when getting close to Honeysuckle over this trip but I feel that might have been due to her needing the run a bit more.
Newbury 3.00 Betfair Game Spirit Chase (Grade 2) 2m1/2f
A really tough race for me to pick a winner in but I’m keeping the faith with GREANETEEN. I know Cobden thinks a lot of this horse and he certainly didn’t lose much in defeat when second to Politologue in the Tingle Creek. He looks progressive and I can see him improving again to take this. This track will suit and I think he has plenty going for him.
RSA winner Champ makes his belated return but he is entitled to need the run and is back down to 2 miles which will count against him. It would be good to see him run well with an eye to the Festival next month. Sceau Royal gets weight and if none the worse from that fall at Kempton could bounce back and emerge as the main danger.
Market Rasen 3.15 MansionBet’s Faller Insurance Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) 2m1/2f
This looks a classy little handicap on paper and a few of these could go onto better races in the future. MICK MAESTRO edges it for me after winning by 15 lengths last time. He is up 13lb for that which seems fair and if in the same vein of form he will take some beating and make it 3 wins this season.
Gipsy De Choisel is the main danger with a very good run behind the classy Metier at Ascot. The other one who will likely be in the mix will be Ajero who is in top form and has David Bass on board.
Newbury 3.35 Betfair Hurdle (Grade 3) 2m1/2f
Insanely competitive as it usually is and I’ve gone for one at a price here in THYME WHITE for Paul Nicholls. Of course he won the race last year with Pic D’Orhy and Cobden is in the saddle which is a big plus. This horse return with an impressive win at Chepstow in October and he had yet to be asked for an effort when unseating 2 out over C&D in November. He has been put away since and you get the impression a mark of 141 could be very lenient. I think this big field will suit and he is massively overpriced in my book at 25/1!
Buzz would be the danger for Nicky Henderson. 5lb claimer Kevin Brogan has been booked for the ride and this horse has a serious turn of foot. He was impressive at Ascot prior to finishing second to Not So Sleepy and is entitled to be bang there again. Stablemate Mister Coffey and Soaring Glory complete the shortlist.
