Kempton 1.50 Close Brothers Pencil Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m41/2f
Just the four runners set to go to post which has become the norm for this race. It does look a good renewal but two really stand out, GA LAW and Tamaroc Du Mathan. The former edges it for me with his only loss over fences coming behind the classy Allmankind. That was over 2 miles and he looks better over further with all wins coming at this trip. The form of two of those wins have worked out well with Hurricane Harvey winning a Grade 2 at Doncaster. At this level he looks the one to beat for the Snowden team.
Paul Nicholls has a great record in this race and Tamaroc Du Mathan who was last seen finishing behind Shishkin should give him another good chance. Ga Law is favoured though as he sees out this trip well which can’t be said for the Nicholls’ horse.
Lingfield 2.05 (AW) Betway Hever Spring Stakes (Listed Race) Class 1 5f
Moss Gill is likely to be quite a short price for this given his official rating of 108 and the fact he can run well fresh but I’m keen to oppose and I think there’s value in backing ROCKET ACTION for Robert Cowell. This son of Toronado has a useful turn of foot and while he wasn’t seen to best effect last term he did catch the eye on final start in Ireland when fourth in a Group 3 at Dundalk. He was denied a run at a crucial stage and may well have gone close if seeing daylight. He hasn’t run since and if fit enough on return he could ask a few questions of the favourite.
Blue De Vega is a stablemate to the selection and won four times last year but he was below par behind Dakota Gold at Nottingham when last seen and doesn’t have the most convincing record fresh so might be best watched. Lord Riddiford has been running to a consistent level and won last time so looks best of the remainder.
Kempton 2.25 Close Brothers Adonis Juvenile Hurdle (Grade 2) Class 1 2m
Alan King has won 2 of the last 4 renewals of this race and TRITONIC looks a solid chance of making it 3 wins in 5. He was a good horse on the Flat and could be better over hurdles. He was three lengths behind the reopposing Casa Loupi going over the last at Ascot but kept going all the way to the line to win with something in-hand in the end. He would have learnt a lot from that and I expect him to improve and take a lot of beating.
Casa Loupi will go well off the front again but he is unlikely to flip the form. The main danger looks to be Paso Doble who was a runner on the Flat for Jim Bolger and Nicholls does well with these types. Margaret’s Legacy is unbeaten in two runs but this is much tougher now.
Lingfield 2.40 (AW) Betway Winter Derby Stakes (Group 3) (All-Weather Championships Fast-Track Qualifier) Class 1 1m2f
Father Of Jazz is likely to be a warm order here after running out a very impressive winner over track and trip last time. He is clearly improving fast and has to be feared but this is his toughest assignment to date and he will need to take another big step forward to complete the four-timer.
For me FELIX is the one to beat. Marco Botti’s son of Lope De Vega hasn’t really put a foot wrong winning 4 of his 6 starts since switching to this yard from Sir Michael Stoute. He has a strong finishing kick over this trip and he might just pick them all up under Hollie Doyle. He was by no means disgraced beaten just half a length by Bangkok last time and if anything put in a career best. Arguably he should be favourite for this and I think he’s going to run a huge race. Forest of Dean also ties in with that form and shouldn’t be too far away either.
Kempton 3.00 Sky Bet Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Class 1 2m
This is a tough race to judge on all known form. Plenty have won but what they have beaten isn’t great. ATHOLL STREET has impressed on both starts and comes out best on ratings. His 16 length win at Taunton looks nothing special on paper but he did it so easily and I can see him doing similar on the pace in this race.
Calico looks the main danger for the Skeltons as he surely has more to come like the selection. He only had to be shaken-up to win at Ludlow. Mackenberg bounced back on the all-weather recently and could make up the top 3. Cape Gentleman has been nibbled at in the market but he was pulled up last time so comes here with a bit to prove at present.
Newcastle 3.15 Vertem Eider Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Class 2 4m11/2f
Crosspark won this in 2019 and comes here with a string of consistent runs to his name but as a result he has continued to edge up the handicap and this looks a big ask off 150 now some 15lb higher than when he was victorious 2 years ago. Given how competitive it is I’ve decided to back two against the field and my main hope is SALTY BOY for Bridgwater and Powell. This horse has run some decent races this season and was last seen staying on well for sixth in the Sussex National at Plumpton. This stiffer test should play to his strengths and I think he’ll be galloping on when others have cried enough. He’s unexposed over these marathon trips so makes plenty of appeal.
SPRINGFIELD FOX is the other one I have to play at a price. He has been pulled up the last twice and as a result is down 7lb (from that first run) so the handicapper has certainly given him a chance. I still think this horse has potential and I can see this sort of test suiting so at 12/1 I have to chance him bouncing back under the in-form David Bass. The cheekpieces go back on which might help and he should find this easier. Sam’s Adventure and Big River complete the shortlist.
Kempton 3.35 Close Brothers Handicap Chase (Grade 3) (GBB Race) Class 1 3m
This looks very competitive as it always is so I think it is worth chancing one at a bigger price. SLATE HOUSE has been running over 2 and a half miles which I think is a bit short for him considering his best form is over 3 miles (Grade 1 winner). He was out of his depth in the RSA but this is his first run back at this trip since and a mark of 148 looks workable. His comeback run behind Capeland after another wind-op is promising and I think he will outrun his odds at this trip. Still around 14/1 at the time of writing.
The main dangers look like the favourite Cap Du Nord who is ultra consistent in handicaps and won’t be far way again and the other is Double Shuffle who at the ripe old age of 11 is still in good form based on his last run. Al Dancer was an excellent third in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and is better than what he showed last time so also enters calculations.
