Doncaster 2.10 Jack Sharp (6/4)

Half-brother to Mister Fisher so certainly bred to make into a useful horse; showed promise at a big price when third at Doncaster on hurdles debut in December; improved to finish runner-up last time; more to offer so big shout here.

Brian Hughes has opted for Doncaster over Cheltenham on Thursday and he could be rewarded in the very first race of the day with the improving JACK SHARP. This son of Scorpion has made an encouraging start and with a further jolt of improvement on the cards he looks a leading player in this novice hurdle. The step up to two and a half miles should unlock further progress and getting 7lb from main market rival Topofthecotswolds could prove decisive. The latter is exposed in comparison so I’ll be hoping the selection improves past him with plenty in his favour today. Greenrock Abbey definitely has a future but took a heavy fall at Ascot and might need a bit more time to overcome that.

Hexham 12.40 Lady Villanelle (15/8)

Promising mare who left bumper exploits well behind bolting up on debut over hurdles on return over this track and trip in November; not disgraced in third under a penalty at Musselburgh and obvious chance now handicapping.

With the promise of more to come it’s hard to look past LADY VILLANELLE here and it’s no surprise to see the money coming for her this morning. She was flagged up on Sky Sports Racing as one of the best backed horses of the day at Hexham. She travelled notably well before being ridden clear on her hurdles debut and with more experience under her belt back at this track it’s hard to find any chinks in her armour. West End Lady never really posed a threat at Kelso last time but ran well here before that and could emerge as the main danger. She has been a bit of a negative in the market this morning though. Gamesters Icon disappointed at Carlisle but is feared if bouncing back to her best.
