Newbury 1.00 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes (Class 4) 1m
The Notebook produced a good winner yesterday as Third Realm won impressively at Nottingham. Another horse I’ve been waiting to see runs at Newbury today. NOTEBOOK was a filly I had a lot of interest in given I was a big fan of her dam Sky Lantern. Her breeding with Frankel doesn’t get much better for me and she certainly ran like a promising horse when second at Ascot. She raced green early but the penny really dropped late and she ran on strongly for second. Put away since she is sure to do better now and my gut feeling is she could be a bit special.
Sea The Stars colt Derab obviously brings a lot of potential to the table as well being a full brother to the legend that is Enable! He was second to La Barrosa on debut at Ascot and we’ve seen that horse chase home his stablemate Master Of The Seas in the Craven last week so that is very strong form. Strictly on the clock he has to improve to beat the selection though. I fancy them to finish the 1-2!
Ayr 1.15 Scotty Brand Handicap Chase (Listed Race) 2m1/2f
I think the market has this all wrong. I know King D’Argent is coming in chasing a hat-trick and looking to make it 4 from his last 5 but he isn’t the most convincing for me and up another 9lb he is definitely one I want to oppose at a short price. He may well go and win given Harry Skelton’s form but you have to take a stance when you have a strong feeling on a race and this is one.
SOME REIGN looks the value play. I found it hard to split him and Grand Sancy but given the former has recent winning form to his name and is a bigger price I think he’s the way to go. He is up to a career high mark off 138 now but could be suited by how this pans out if the fav and Return Ticket force the pace and I think he’s worth chancing. Grand Sancy certainly has the ability to take this out but just doesn’t produce it consistently enough to be backed with any confidence.
Newbury 1.35 Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes (Group 3) 1m4f
A really competitive renewal of the Surprise Stakes (John Porter Stakes) and DEJA gets the marginal vote with his form in handicaps looking more than good enough to compete at this level. He is rated the best in the field and goes well fresh which can’t be said about plenty of these. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching jockey booking and I would expect him to go close at a decent each way price.
Al Aasy is the favourite for this and you can see why with form behind top class horses such as Mishriff and Mogul. He was better for the run last year so despite his trainers cracking form I am happy to oppose on his first run of the season at a skinny price. Red Verdon has fitness on his side and could go very well at a big price.
Ayr 1.50 CPMS Novices’ Champion Handicap Chase (Class 2) 3m
I’ve got to stick with VALUE TIP here as this horse is clearly thriving. He is up another hike in the weights but the way he won last time he has been making a mockery of his mark and while this is quite easily his toughest assignment to date I just can’t see how he isn’t going to run his race again and come there jumping and travelling well. He will definitely know he’s had a race after this one but at 9/2 there is still juice in his price for me and I’m willing to row in again.
Pilbara has been the gamble of the race stepping back up in trip and he is easy to make a case for. He should run well but looks a bit short now at around 3/1. Marown was back to winning ways last time and is still quite lightly raced so has to be respected. Dead Right was the one at a double-figure price I thought could go well as I think you can put a line through his last run and he has had a wind op so might find some improvement.
Newbury 2.10 Dubai Duty Free Stakes (Fred Darling Stakes) (Group 3) 7f
This race is always well contested and it will produce plenty of horses to follow in the season ahead. ALCOHOL FREE only raced three times as a 2 year old and impressed on every run, improving each time. She won the Cheveley Park on her final run of the season at Newmarket and if in the same form here she will be hard to beat. None of these have had a run yet this season but she won first time out last year so no worries on that front.
Happy Romance is the danger as always with her and the selection beating each other last season. She is drawn 14 which will suit her run style but needs a bit of luck from there with lower numbers working out better in this race. Wild Iris could be the surprise package as she lost so much ground in a much lesser race at Newcastle and won that easily. The market may have underestimated her.
Ayr 2.25 Coral Scottish Champion Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m
This looks a great opportunity for the likeable MILKWOOD to get his head back in front. He was last seen running a huge race in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival finishing third to Belfast Banter. The latter has since followed up at Aintree to give the form some serious substance and the selection actually lost a shoe that day too so it can be marked up. He hit the front too soon in hindsight and was grabbed late. He is only up 2lb and looks to have plenty in favour here as he tries to win this prestigious prize.
Calico is unexposed and is 2 from 3 over hurdles so there could be more to come but I think he has enough to find with the selection and shouldn’t be as short as he is in the market. I’m not convinced he’ll find a great deal off the bridle either. Tommy’s Oscar certainly catches the eye but the worry with him is he needs softer ground to be seen to best effect. Anna Bunina and Thyme White are both held on that County run but again it wouldn’t surprise me to see them run well.
Newbury 2.45 Watershed Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes (Group 3) 7f
A horse we followed for plenty of last season CHINDIT looks to have a great chance to bounce back from the Dewhurst Run last season. He was short of room at a vital stage that day so you can put a line through that run. He had won all of his 3 runs before that and this does look a good opportunity to add more black type to his record.
Quite interesting to see Jim Crowley on Mujbar who has solid form to his name but Alkumait is half his price in the market under Dane O’Neill who I think would be the main danger. The other one I am very interested to see run at this level is Mehmento who won two races at Southwell by a combined 23 lengths and whilst many will say the form is poor which is fair enough but the time of the races were both right up there with all of these so might be worth a saver.
Ayr 3.00 Jordan Electrics Ltd Future Champion Novices’ Chase (Grade 2) 2m41/2f
Arkle fourth ALLMANKIND is back out and I’m expecting him to dominate this field. You won’t get rich backing him at even money and he is a bit of a risky proposition given how erratic his jumping can be at times but there is no doubting his talent and if the real Allmankind turns up he will quite simply leave these standing. This isn’t a bad field but he is the clear class act and I’m expecting him to take care of them and give Harry Skelton another crucial winner in the jockeys championship.
Tamaroc Du Mathan was lightly raced over hurdles but has won 2 from 3 since sent chasing and has a bright future. He beat Ga Law at Kempton and that’s good form so he looks the danger to the favourite. Whoshotthesheriff is outclassed and can’t be recommended but I do rate Malaystic and he might go well for a long way before backing out in the closing stages.
Newbury 3.20 MansionBet Spring Cup Handicap (Class 2) 1m
A good renewal of this race and I did think Troll Peninsula was the one to beat but he’s been declared a non runner this morning. Nugget was highlighted as one of the main dangers but his price has really collapsed as Andy Holding put him up this morning so with little value in backing him I’ve sided with MATTHEW FLINDERS who I think is poised to go close. I think a mile on the straight course here is ideal as he really impressed on penultimate start as a 3yo at Doncaster. I can still see him finding further improvement and given he had excuses at York on final start it wouldn’t surprise me to see him resume his progression now.
Nugget will be fit having finished third at Nottingham earlier this month where he was denied a run more than once. He is sure to improve and looks a threat with Moore up but he hasn’t been missed in the market. Kingman gelding Raaeq should run well and is a bit overpriced at 11/1. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Johan run well at 14’s too so he might be one to back in the Each Way Extra with bet365.
Ayr 3.35 Coral Scottish Grand National Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 4m
What a race! Really looking forward to this from a racing perspective. From a punting perspective it is quite tough to find the winner and I usually find myself trying to oppose the front of the market. Aye Right is extremely hard to pick holes in and he deserves a big one like this but with conditions far from ideal and a long season I think there’s enough reasons to take him on. NOTACHANCE is my main hope in the race. This likeable chaser has looked really progressive and I thought he got into a lovely rhythm before staying on strongly to beat a dour stayer in Achille at Warwick. That backed up his Bangor run and he looked to be heading in the right direction. He was pulled up at Haydock but perhaps he needed more time to get over his Warwick excursions and freshened up since back on a better surface I think he ticks a lot of boxes.
Given the nature of the race I’ve picked one out at a double-figure price in SOME CHAOS. This horse would have to bring his best form to the table to go close but he certainly isn’t handicapped out of things and he will be fit from hurdling the last twice. This has clearly been the aim for a while now and with conditions ideal I think he will run better than his odds of 20/1 are suggesting. Soldier Of Love and Mister Fogpatches complete the shortlist but I’ll be hoping to see The Hollow Ginge run well for connections too.
ITV Racing Win Double
Both the NAP and NB run live on ITV Racing on Sunday afternoon. These are our two best bets of the entire day and we’ve combined them to maximise profit. The NAP (best bet) is chasing a hat-trick too!
ITV Racing Each Way Double
With a whopping 10 races live on ITV Racing on Sunday afternoon we have picked out two horses at decent odds we can see running well. If both place we should still make some nice profit so they’re worth including.
ITV Racing Win Trixie
We also have a Win Trixie on Sunday afternoon. These are three horses we fancy strongly running live on ITV Racing. If 2/3 win we should still get a nice return.
