Sandown 1.55 bet365 Novices’ Championship Final Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) 2m

Competitive opener at Sandown with the bookies going 6/1 the field at the time of writing. The one I really quite like is ON TO VICTORY who was back to his best last time at Kempton and has been running in some top races. He was too keen to do himself justice in the Betfair Hurdle and before that he was right up there with the classy Third Time Lucki before falling and that horse is now rated in the 140s. I think he is better than his mark of 127 and will take some beating.

Herbiers and Royaume Uni will likely be in the mix here and I think Herbiers may hold the form and be the biggest danger to the selection. Celestial Force is ultra consistent and he has a decent each way chance as well.

Leicester 2.10 Elusive Bloodstock EBF Stallions King Richard III Stakes (Listed Race) 7f

With Lord Campari a non runner this morning we have just the four runners left for this Listed prize and while I’m not overly keen on weighing in with POGO at such a short price now he does have to be the selection. He has achieved a very decent level of form and is already proven in this grade having ran out a decisive winner at Windsor with the useful Urban Icon in second. He has since bumped into the likes of Persian King in France and Happy Power at Newmarket so if he gives his running that should suffice.

Mums Tipple has been back in form lately on the AW but I just couldn’t back him with any real confidence. Shine So Bright hasn’t gone on since winning that Group 2 at York for me and has to be passed over. I can see the outsider of the field chasing home the fav. Beat Le Bon is veery consistent and he should pose some sort of a challenge if getting away on terms.

Sandown 2.30 bet365 Oaksey Chase (Grade 2) 2m61/2f

On ratings this looks like a match between FRODON and Mister Fisher. With the former the more reliable horse so will do for us. They both like going from the front but I think Frodon in a rhythm will be hard to pass even at this shorter trip. The Gold Cup last time was probably a bit much trip-wise for the King George winner and if Bryony Frost gets him into a nice rhythm and goes a good gallop he should take some beating as his price suggests.

Mister Fisher as mentioned is the main danger but he is so unreliable with 3 of his 4 races this season seeing him pulled-up or unseating the rider. Born Survivor will pick up the pieces for second if Mister Fisher isn’t at his best.

Haydock 2.50 Casumo Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (Class 2) 7f

Wide open this and I’m taking a chance on GOBI SUNSET for Mark Johnston. I know he only ran on Tuesday but horses from this yard seem to thrive on racing and he has been in good form this season finishing second or first on all four runs. He impressed over this trip at Newcastle in April and has bumped into a couple of progressive rivals since in Dirty Rascal and Margub. If he can find any improvement he will go close and 9/1 is too big.

Dangers obviously a plenty and Dreamloper has to be respected having signed off last season with 2 wins from 3. She hasn’t been seen for 231 days though and might need the run so too short from that aspect. Persuasion needs to take another step forward but that isn’t out of the equation so also respected. Fox Champion interesting but had enough chances for me and usually finds a way to get beat.

Sandown 3.05 bet365 Celebration Chase (Grade 1) 1m71/2f

We have waited a while to see Altior return to the track and he is going for 4 in a row in this race but I do think it will be a tough ask for the now 11 year old. He has been ready to run a few times and pulled out due to the ground not being suitable. He needed the run at Christmas behind Nube Negra but he may need it again here so I am happy to side with PUT THE KETTLE ON. She won a good Champion Chase at the Festival and gets the 7lb allowance from the boys which usually proves a lot in Championship races. Her form is rock solid with 7 wins from 9 chase starts and I still don’t think she gets the credit she deserves and will put up a big performance again.

Other than Altior who we know wins this at his best, Sceau Royal rates a big danger but still has to reverse the Champion Chase form behind the selection which all adds to the excitement for this race.

Sandown 3.40 bet365 Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Grade 3) 3m5f

What a race! 16 horses head to post for this and it will come as no surprise to you to hear I’ve taken two against the field. Plan Of Attack is favourite at the time of writing for Henry de Bromhead and Rachael Blackmore and will understandably prove popular but it’s never ideal backing a horse that fell last time out and at the price I’m happy to leave him. GOLAN FORTUNE is the first one that caught my eye. This horse made a winning start over fences at Ludlow in December and he’s been fairly highly tried since. Things didn’t go to plan in the Midlands National last time but if you put a line through that he had been in good form bumping into the likes of Shan Blue and Next Destination. He’s certainly weighted to have a say if bouncing back and the cheekpieces should help spark him back into life.

IRISH PROPHECY is my second play in the race. This horse has done well since going chasing beaten a length by El Presente at Exeter before improving to win impressively at Taunton. He would have found the trip on the sharp side on return back over hurdles at Ascot where he was sent off at 14/1 and that run would have put him spot on for this now. The market seems to have largely ignored his chances and I think he has plenty going for him.
