Punchestown 3.40 Specialist Joinery Group Handicap Hurdle 2m

A tough race to dissect but I’m keen to keep FIVE HELMETS on side and he is chasing a hat-trick so 6/1 could look generous come tomorrow. He has really turned a corner of late winning well at Fairyhouse last month showing a good attitude to stay on well after a slow jump at the last. He proved his mark all wrong winning by 5 effortless lengths at Navan last time and even under a 9lb rise he should still be ahead of the assessor. I think he’ll love this big field scenario and he will be waited with before looking to pick them off.

Ena Baie caught the eye when fourth at Cork last time under a patient ride and she is another one that could be well handicapped as a result. Some of her previous form for Harry Fry is strong and I expect her to play a hand in the finish. Rock Chica is running to a consistent level and she completes the shortlist.

This race features a horse I have been waiting to run again and that is ENTOUCAS. He travelled so well in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham and if he didn’t blunder 2 out he would have beaten Sky Pirate. The form of that race looks good and so does pretty much all of his chase form as he is just ultra-consistent and will go very close off a mark of 145 at a decent price.

The main danger is Jessie Harrington’s Jungle Junction who is on a hat-trick and may still have a fair bit to come. Sully D’Oc AA should run well again after his Aintree run earlier in the month in a race where J P McManus seems to have plenty of live chances in.

Some Neck showed a good attitude to win at Cheltenham in December but he hasn’t quite backed that up since and while he ran well when third to a rejuvenated Tiger Roll at the Festival last month I think he’s short enough here. I think it’s lazy siding with him to be honest and I’ll be opposing for sure. Alpha Des Obeaux hasn’t won a race since 2018 and while he’d be a big danger to all if taking to this discipline again he is an 11yo now and it’s hard to be certain how much ability he retains.

I’m happy to side with the younger legs of STAND UP AND FIGHT for the master that is Enda Bolger. He is bidding to win this race for the fifteenth time which is unbelievable when you think about it. He has Stand Up And Fight and Blue Templar but it is the former that looks to have a major shout. He ran a cracker when beaten less than a length by Jury Duty at Thurles and was only denied a neck by Solomn Grundy at Fairyhouse last time. He is up significantly in trip and has to prove this sort of test suits but I think he has the right profile and is worth chancing. Stablemate Blue Templar was running home well at Cork and shouldn’t be easily dismissed either.

Punchestown 5.25 Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1) 3m

Plenty of Cheltenham form on show here and the head and heart agree for once with FLOORING PORTER. Jonathan Moore missed the ride at the last minute declaring himself not fit enough to ride and advised putting Danny Mullins onboard at the Festival. It would be great to see him land this and he has a great chance with Flooring Porter rated 6lb clear of the field. Last time at Cheltenham I thought they wouldn’t let him have it easy in front but he is simply that good he is hard to catch and will be again on Thursday.

Beacon Edge was fourth in that race at Cheltenham and will be in the mix again as he is still improving. Ronald Pump is interesting as always and has run plenty of big races so I wouldn’t be surprised if he is in the top 3.

Flooring Porter 9/4

Punchestown 6.00 Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle 3m

Another fiercely competitive handicap but CAPODANNO looks sure to run a big race. He was a big drifter before getting backed heavily just before winning his maiden at Clonmel so I think they knew what they had with him. He has been beaten twice since but has caught the eye on both occasions finishing third at Thurles despite jumping poorly. He was back on track up to this trip when fourth at Fairyhouse and looks poised to take a pot like this now. I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t have scope off a mark of 132 given he’s so lightly raced.

Floueur has been running well and wasn’t beaten far in the Martin Pipe behind two extremely well handicapped horses. The winner Galopin Des Champs won a Grade 1 virtually on the bridle here yesterday and he will appreciate going back up to 3 miles – a big danger. Pure Genius has won 2 of his last 3 and goes back up in trip and also looks a major threat to the selection in a wide open race.

Punchestown 6.35 Ryanair Novice Chase (Grade 1) 2m

Willie Mullins has won the last 5 runnings of this race and he has a fantastic chance of adding another with the classy ENERGUMENE. He missed the Arkle at Cheltenham due to a small muscle injury so we don’t know how he compares to Shishkin but I do think he is better than this field. He is 6lb clear on ratings and has won his last 5 races with ease. He has already brushed half of his rivals in this race aside and if at his best he will win this and probably win it well.

Captain Guinness fell in the Arkle when beat but this better ground will suit and he could get a bit closer to the selection than previous meetings. That should leave Janidil to fill the top 3 with Embittered not likely to run after running Wednesday and Zarkareva has enough to find with these.

Punchestown 6.35

Energumene 4/9

Punchestown 7.05 Close Brothers Mares Novice Hurdle (Listed) 2m

The Eye Catcher landed yesterday as Galopin Des Champs took the step up to Grade 1 company in his stride. We head to the Mares Novice Hurdle on Thursday and MAGIC DAZE can go one better after chasing home Telmesomethinggirl at Cheltenham last month. The winner was very impressive but she did well to get so close given how hard she pulled and if she settles better she is expected to have too much class for this field.

The second fav Gauloise found Skyace too strong last time and that horse was only fourth, two places behind the selection at Cheltenham last time. Collateral form means she’ll need to improve to beat the selection. I can see the pair fighting it out that being said but Bigbadandbeautiful shouldn’t be ruled out either as she is progressing nicely and is another with potential going forward.

Magic Daze 9/4 EYE CATCHER

Punchestown 7.35 Grant Thornton Flat Race 2m

This isn’t usually a bumper to follow for future form but a couple of these could be pretty smart. DYSART DYNAMO for Willie Mullins was well fancied before his run at Clonmel and he showed why winning by over 8 lengths. He traveled easily and when he was asked for an effort he found so much and I give him the edge over Grand Jury.

Grand Jury is the obvious danger with his eye catching headway to win comfortably he has to be taken seriously. Bardenstown Lad impressed on his national hunt flat debut and even though I think he might need more of a test of stamina he should be fighting it out for a place. So all in all it looks a strong renewal.
