I’ve been a big fan of Grove Ferry and while he wasn’t disgraced in the Lincoln I did expect a bit more so I’m going to pass him over today for ASCENSION. This son of Dark Angel had a progressive look to his form last season and while he never landed a blow in the Lincoln on return he should strip fitter for the run now and with a bit of juice in the ground these could be ideal conditions for him. He is versatile as to how he can race so if they go too hard it wouldn’t surprise me to see him take a toe in.
Revich loves it here and ran well when fourth in a good race at Newbury so is a deserved favourite from the plum draw. Dulas improved to finish second at Haydock and also has a handy draw so is feared.
Market Rasen 2.00 Unibet “You’re On” Handicap Chase (Class 3) 3m
This looks a fairly weak race and FORGOT TO ASK must have a great chance to make it 2 wins in a row. His form is rock solid 3221 and he has only been raised 1lb for the win at Plumpton last month. That may have only been a 3-runner race but it looks a solid piece of form and if at the same level today I think he will win which is why the price off 11/2 at the time of writing seems big.
As You Like looks the main danger as he is dropping down the handicap and could be on a dangerous mark but I can’t fully trust him on his current form. Compadre likes it here and completes the shortlist.
Chester 2.15 Melodi Media Huxley Stakes (Group 2) 1m21/2f
Aidan O’Brien won this with Deauville back in 2017 and he has a good chance of another winner with the promising ARMORY here. This Galileo colt won a Group 3 at the Curragh last summer before running creditably in the Irish Champion when third behind Magical and Ghaiyyath. He then chased home Sir Dragonet in the Cox Plate in Australia. Put away since this looks a good starting point and I think he’ll make a winning return.
Sangarius is the danger having reached a decent level of form last season. He beat Bangkok a nose at Lingfield in December and has had a wind op since. Palavecino is probably the pace angle but is likely to go too hard off the front.
Chester 2.45 tote+ Chester Cup Handicap (Class 2) 2m21/2f
The usual big field looks set to line up for this and NOT SO SLEEPY looks to be on a fair mark after switching back from hurdles. He ran really well at Cheltenham and Aintree in Grade 1’s and is now rated 155 over hurdles so to run off 100 on the Flat looks appealing. He has a good level of Flat form running behind Great White Shark at Newmarket and if he is anywhere near his best he should be right in the mix under likely positive tactics.
WHO DARES WINS is the other one I like in this. He is consistent over this marathon trip on the Flat and drawn in 2 he can be fairly prominent throughout. Cardano could be the danger if taking the extra distance in his stride as he seems to be progressing all the time. Falcon Eight is also respected under Frankie Dettori.
Chester 3.15 Boodles Conditions Stakes (Class 3) 5f
The speedster EL ASTRONAUTE is back out and given his record fresh and his liking for a tight 5f like this he looks up to justifying favouritism. He has never run a bad race at this track 212123 and everything looks in place for another big effort. He will bounce out from a low draw and look to burn them all off.
King’s Lynn ran a cracker back from 175 days off the track to finish third to Came From The Dark at Newbury last month and if he comes on for that he could give the selection most to think about. Ainsdale needs to bounce back but would also be a threat if doing so.
Chester 3.45 Retraining Of Racehorses Handicap (Class 2) 1m21/2f
A fairly trappy renewal with plenty of these not in the best of form. RESTORER was last seen winning over course and distance and only carries 2lb more on his return to the track. He won first time out last season so that isn’t a worry and he seems to thrive over this trip and Chester. His last 3 runs over course and distance have seen him second twice and won last time. He was only beaten by small margins and is the one to beat at this level.
Fox Tal brings in the graded form and rates the danger in this weak affair but he does have to give the field weight on his first run of the season so I am more than happy to side with the selection. Alternative Fact is another one I expect to be on the premises in an open race.
