York 1.40 Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap (Class 2) 1m4f

Wide open race to kick off York’s Dante meeting and it is full of quality. ILARAAB gets the vote after improving on every run since his debut and he’s now racked up 5 wins in a row. He’s beaten a few of these already and although this is his first run of the season William Haggas has been firing in the winners already so I’m not too concerned. If he has continued his improvement as a 4 year old he will go very close in this.

There are dangers galore but the main one looks to be My Frankel who took a big step forward on the all-weather last time and if proving he can run to the same level on turf he will be in the mix. Lower down the weights Taqareer could reverse the form with some of his rivals getting weight in this and has a decent each way chance.

York 2.10 Churchill Tyres Handicap (Class 2) 6f

The first thing I noticed about this race was the price of Bielsa and that I didn’t think he deserved to be that short in the betting. Obviously he has performed creditably in a big field handicap over this C&D in the past and he should come on for that reappearance run but I wasn’t that impressed by it and I think he’ll find a few too good again. I’ve taken two against the field with my main hope being ROULSTON SCAR. This horse scored over C&D back in 2019 and has held his form well since. If you put a line through that penultimate start where he clearly wasn’t himself he has a massive chance. He caught the eye running on well at Kempton when last seen and if he is fit and fired up on return he is going to be finishing strongly here.

Given the size of this field I’ve had a saver too as the 14/1 just looks too big about MANIGORDO for Tim Easterby. This horse used to be trained by Richard Hannon and while he made a slow start for this yard finishing last at Musselburgh he quickly got back on track to win convincingly at Thirsk last month. He is up 8lb but could still be ahead of the assessor and I think this big field scenario will suit so he could run well. The yard have fired 4 darts this year and he appeals most for me.

York 2.40 Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes (Group 2) 6f

I can’t help but be a little underwhelmed by Oxted in his last two runs. He was well backed in Saudi Arabia but failed to fire and then was left vulnerable in the closing stages to be chinned in the Abernant. He went through that race like a laboured horse and if he runs like that again I think ART POWER will leave him standing. The latter is a Dark Angel colt who improved fast last season winning his first 3 starts. He was only beaten a length in the Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot behind Glen Shield and that form makes him the one to beat. He has the potential to be even better as a 4yo and is a confident selection.

Oxted is obviously a danger but he’ll need to come on again for that last run and you’d want to see him travel better into the race. Starman failed to handle softer conditions last time but still has potential and is also respected. Molatham is a horse I expect to do better this year too but he might need this.

York 3.10 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes (Group 3) 1m21/2f

This years Musidora looks an average renewal with a few potential stars but plenty of unknowns as well. NOON STAR for Sir Michael Stoute has improved significantly with every run and I was impressed by her win at Wetherby over this trip for the first time. She is by Galileo so should keep improving over these longer trips and I think she is the one to beat in this.

The main danger is Teona as we just don’t know how good she is after a 9 length romp on the all-weather last time. She is really well bred but I didn’t want to take a chance on her first time up and on turf for the first time. Mystery Angel impressed at Newmarket in the Pretty Polly but would need to step forward again. Snowfall looks to be a decent price with her sights lowered and being stepped up in trip and could run much better than her odds suggest.

York 3.40 Sky Bet Handicap (Class 3) 7f

I’m willing to give RIFLEMAN another chance here. This colt by The Gurkha jinked and unseated Ryan Moore at Sandown last month but was bang there when doing so and he looks open to further improvement yet. His win at Kempton as a 2yo was very promising and I think he has a bright future. This is obviously competitive but I think he deserves to be favourite and will go close.

I’m quite surprised to see Huddleton Mac as short as he is as he ran a stinker in the Greenham. More to come handicapping granted but I wouldn’t be as keen as the market is making out. Northern Express is the one I can see chasing the selection home. He should build on that Beverley third and can run better than his price suggests.

ITV Racing Each Way Trixie

We also have an Each Way Trixie for you on Wednesday which includes three horses we fancy to go close. If 2/3 win we should still lock in some profit.
