York 1.40 Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap (Class 2) 5f
This is a race that usually goes to one of the better horses in the race and in the top third of the weights and COUNT D’ORSAY fits the bill for us. He impressed at Chester behind Jabbarockie and finished in front of a few of these making up ground at a track where it pays to be prominent so you can mark that run up. He is off the same mark and will go very close in this.
Copper Knight who was third at Chester is getting a chunk of weight from the selection again but it remains to be seen if he can beat him. Venturous could be a big price if getting out on terms as he reared at Chester and made steady progress late on.
York 2.10 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Middleton Fillies’ Stakes (Group 2) 1m21/2f
Gosden has won the last two renewals of this with Coronet and Lah Ti Dar but the stable don’t have a runner this year so perhaps it can go back to Ralph Beckett who took it in 2015 with Secret Gesture. CHAMADE is an honest filly and she is likely to go hard off the front and test these. She looked progressive last season winning 2 of her last 3 and was particularly impressive with how much she found to score at Doncaster. This requires another step forward on return but with enough questions over the opposition I make 10/1 a play.
Queen Power is fav and she ran well on return when denied just a head by Lady Bowthorpe but I feel like she usually finds a way to get beat and is too short in the market at 7/4. Passion looks a danger but she is going to be seen in a better light over further so you’d think she’ll get outpaced. Silence Please is in my tracker but I’m surprised they’re targeting this race. I can see her doing her best work late but the selection might already have flown and is more than double the price.
Salisbury 2.25 AJN Steelstock “Record Sales” Handicap (Class 3) 1m2f
An interesting little race with WAHRAAN taking on Lord Protector again with the latter coming out on top at Windsor last month. Wahraan was a big eye catcher on the day as he was very keen and left himself a lot to do before flying home to get beaten just over a length. The selection is 2 pounds better off than his rival on Thursday and he looks like he will improve a ton for the run and I think he will reverse the form and take this.
Lord Protetector is unbeaten and even though he is giving the selection a lot of weight he will still be the main danger. Jaramillo looks like he is making steady progress and if stepping forward again he could be in the mix but like Lord Protector is giving plenty of weight to Wahraan who looks ahead of his mark.
York 2.40 Matchbook Betting Podcast Hambleton Handicap (Class 2) 1m
This is fiercely competitive so I’ve decided to take two against the field. My main hope is MATTHEW FLINDERS after really catching the eye at Newbury. He is progressive and with improvement a near certainty following that run he can go close off just a 2lb rise. He wasn’t given a hard time of it and kept on well enough in the closing stages. This big field will suit and I expect him to be a lot sharper now.
JOHAN was also making his reappearance that day and finished a couple of places behind Matthew Flinders having come from further back. He is a likeable type who should strip fitter now and I expect him to play a big role in the finish here too. He is a very good price at 10/1 so I’ve had a saver. Dangers are a plenty but the shortlist is headed by Artistic Rifles and King Ottokar with the latter a lively threat if the rain arrives.
York 3.10 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes (Group 2) 1m21/2f
This doesn’t look the strongest renewal of the Dante but there is still 1 or 2 potentially very good ones in here. Aidan O’Brien had plenty of options for this race and HIGH DEFINITION looks a rock solid favourite. He is 2 from 2, both at the Curragh and the form is the best on offer. He beat stablemate Wordsworth on debut who has come out and won since and beating Monaasib also looks solid considering he was only just beaten by Poetic Flare who has since won the 1,000 Guineas. He has to be the one to beat and hopefully he will go from this to the Derby.
Flying Visit could be the danger with the Bolger yard in great form and his comeback run looking even better since Bolshoi Ballet has gone in again spectacularly and he must have an eac way chance here at a big price. Of the rest Gear Up has been ultra consistent and won’t be far away as usual.
York 3.40 British Stallion Studs EBF Westow Stakes (Listed Race) 5f
A strong looking Listed race to conclude ITV Racing on Thursday and WINTER POWER should take a bit of beating. This filly did really well as a 2yo and looked firmly on the up when last seen making it 3 wins from her last 4 with a convincing success in a Group 3 at Newmarket in October. She has potential to do better now and is one I want to keep firmly on side.
Acklam Express is obviously a classy sort who ran really well when third in a Group 1 at Meydan in March. He sets the standard and has to be respected. Dexter Belle has plenty of scope and while she needs to take a fairly big step forward she could run a big race too.
