Not the deepest contest in the world which gives NOTEBOOK an ideal opportunity to bounce back to winning ways. He had won all of his 5 handicap starts until getting beaten at Salisbury first time out this season and he will likely come on a lot for the run. He goes well on soft ground and this 1 mile 6f trip is ideal for him. He has to be the one to beat and that’s very much being reflected in the betting this morning.
Hochfeld has been consistent at this level for a while now but that does leave him fairly exposed in a handicap, that said he is still the main danger as it isn’t a strong renewal. I feel the selection has the advantage getting nearly a stone in weight and goes better in the forecast conditions. Amtiyaz is the other one who could make the frame as he has been running well on the all-weather and is unexposed on turf if transferring his form to this surface.
Haydock 1.55 Casumo Horse Racing And Sports Betting Handicap (Class 3) 7f
The heavy ground at Haydock will not be in favour of plenty of these runners in here and that’s why I thought FFION would be a shorter priced favourite rather than the 11/2 at the time of writing. She has improved with every run so far with her run behind Boardman looking very good as he has gone on to win impressively again since. She was clear of the horse in third and in similar conditions off the same mark she looks to be nicely handicapped to go close in this.
Molls Memory also has form behind Boardman and she will be better on this ground as she showed at Newbury last year off the same mark. The selection just looks to have plenty more to come having only run 3 times and she is hard to get way from. Sunset Breeze is tough and should come on for his Victoria Cup run.
Goodwood 2.10 MansionBet Beaten By A Head Festival Stakes (Listed Race) 1m2f
A small but select field for this race and it is hard to be sure of any of them with each runner having questions to answer. AL ZARAQAAN gets a tentative vote back at Listed level after finding it tough in a Group 2 last time. That ended his streak of 4 wins in a row but this looks like fair opportunity to bounce back if handling the softer conditions as the Haggas yard are in top form.
Desert Encounter will handle the conditions fine but he may not have this run at a pace that suits his style of running as he likes to come late off a fast pace. Probably still the main danger. Stormy Antarctic has run poorly on softer ground lately so is also hard to warm to for me.

Not the easiest race to find a winner but I’m keen to side with GREEN BOOK for Venetian Williams. This horse justified strong support to land the gamble at Chester last time and he had Postileo trailing nearly 5 lengths back in second. The handicapper has reacted hiking him up 10lb but similar aggressive tactics could get these in trouble and I think he has a great chance of following up under Ben Curtis.
This sort of test will probably suit Postileo better so it wouldn’t surprise me if he closed the gap. Looks the most likely danger to the selection. Frankenstella is the other one that caught my eye as he wasn’t given a hard time of it when beaten last time and didn’t shape badly.
York 2.40 William Hill Bronte Cup Fillies’ Stakes (Group 3) 1m6f
This looks like a decent renewal with a few of these looking like very good horses. The best one in here looks to be Believe In Love who has won 5 of her last 6 races with her defeat in a better race behind Pista looking very good. That said it is her first run of the season and she has a penalty for her Group 3 win so I am going to take her on today with the race fit MIGHTY BLUE.
Joseph O’Brien’s horses usually take a run or two to get fit and this mare certainly took a massive step forward at Gowran last time. She won a Listed race by over 7 lengths in softer conditions and a repeat of that run would see her go very close in this. Urban Artist and Mawakee look the most likely to be chasing them home with my preference for the former on this ground.
Haydock 3.00 Join Casumo Today Silver Bowl Handicap (Class 2) 1m
The improving HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM can strike again here for Keith Dalgleish and Shane Gray. This colt by Starspangledbanner made it 3 wins from only 7 starts pulling 6 and a half lengths clear at Ripon last time. A 6lb penalty looks perfectly manageable and while this is tougher he does remain capable of better so I think another big run is on the cards. Dark Lion and Headingley should make this a real test and I think that will suit him as he looks to swoop late in the day and claim the prize.
Raadobarg is chasing a hat-trick and is also improving so looks a lively danger. Wobwobwob won in good style at York 10 days ago and is another one who made the shortlist in an open race.
Curragh 3.20 Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (Colts & Fillies) 1m
This looks a wide open Irish 2,000 Guineas with well over half the field in with a good chance. And I am going to give WEMBLEY another chance after he disappointed in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket behind plenty of Saturday’s rivals. He drifted heavily on the day and wasn’t given a hard time of it by Ryan Moore. He should be a lot better for that run and now gets ground he thrives in compared to the fast ground at Newmarket. His form in the Dewhurst was franked in style by St Mark’s Basilica who won the French 2,000 Guineas on Sunday and if bouncing back he will be bang there in these conditions and at a decent price.
Lucky Vega ran a cracker in the English 2,000 Guineas on his comeback run and he is the main danger but I feel he may want quicker ground. Poetic Flare was all out to win the 2,000 Guineas and a third hard race in 3 weeks may just take its toll. I do expect better runs from Van Gogh and Battleground as they are proven in conditions and O’Briens improve a lot with the run usually.
Haydock 3.35 Casumo Bet10Get10 Sandy Lane Stakes (Group 2) 6f
A very good renewal of the the Sandy Lane Stakes and a horse at the head of the betting that is an exciting prospect in VALUE TIP. He has won all 4 of his starts in fairly comfortable fashion and has taken a big step-forward on every run. This is his first run at this level but his times suggest he is more than capable of taking on this lot and has a good chance beating them all. The only slight doubt is whether he handles the softer ground as he hasn’t run on it before.
There are plenty of dangers including Isabella Gilles who should be fine dropping in trip in these conditions and I rate her as the main danger. Of the rest The Lir Jet could outrun his odds on his old form and Umm Kulthum could also be a big price back at 6 furlongs.

Things didn’t pan out for COUNT D’ORSAY last time and given his stablemate Copper Knight was punted off the boards and got the job done it was no surprise to see him given an easy time of things. The money looks to be down today though and with the easing ground a big plus he could easily bounce back with a huge run here. His current mark looks within reach granted the right conditions etc and I’m willing to give him another chance.
Pendleton has been backed into clear favourite now and ran a cracker back from a lengthy absence when denied just a nose last time. If he builds on that then he is sure to go close. Mondammej continues to run well but isn’t the most straightforward. Definitely worth a second look in a race of this nature though. Could run well at a price.
Haydock 4.10 Casumo Best Odds Guaranteed Temple Stakes (Group 2) 5f
Battaash took the last two runnings of this race and with him not running in it this year LIBERTY BEACH who is frequently behind the superstar sprinter has a very good chance at landing this Group 2 race. She was last seen running a massive race in the Abbaye at Lonchamp on heavy ground to finish a close third. If she runs to that level she will be hard to beat in this. That combined with the fact she has won on both of her first runs of the season bodes well for her to take this.
Que Amoro would have been a big danger but she is a non runner now so the price has really dropped on the selection. Keep Busy would probably be the one I’d choose to chase her home with conditions no problem.
