Chester 1.40 Racing Welfare Supporting Racings Workforce Handicap (Class 3) 5f
Angel Alexander showed blistering speed to win this a couple of years ago and I see similar traits in VIRGINIA PLANE here. This daughter of Mehmas was only joined on the line at Lingfield (dead-heat). Four Adaay then went on to reverse the form at Goodwood but that was on much softer ground. The second Dream Composer has looked a nice type since winning his next two so back on this quicker surface I think Virginia Plane is one to keep firmly on side as the form stacks up.
Rebel At Dawn appreciated the cheekpieces going back on last time and has been kept busy. He needs to be respected but he is going to have to make up ground on the selection so I think it’s quite a big ask to follow up. Havagomecca is improving and it wouldn’t surprise me if she emerged as the danger.
York 2.00 Queen Mother’s Cup Handicap (For Female Amateur Jockeys) Class 3 1m4f
A wide open race to kick off a decent day at York and NICHOLAS T gets the vote. He has gone close plenty lately and stepping back up to this trip should be in his favour. His trainer Jim Goldie has won this before so knows what it takes and I think he will be in the mix at the finish at an each way price.
Civil Law is the danger on a hat-trick but may be better over slightly shorter. Arctic Fox could be good for a place as she has won over course and distance and has dropped down the weights.
Sandown 2.15 Coral “Beaten By A Length” Free Bet Scurry Stakes (Listed Race) Class 1 5f
Atalis Bay obviously jumps off the page having defied a penalty on return at Nottingham before backing that up with a good second to the progressive Winter Power at York. He should run well but he has to prove his effectiveness at this track and this is fiercely competitive so I’m not all that keen to take a short price. The one I’m taking a chance on is STEEL BULL for Michael O’Callaghan. This colt won a Group 3 on just his second start and while he has failed to strike since he did run creditably when fifth in the Flying Childers and I can see him leaving that Naas reappearance run behind. He will be fitter now and could get in the shake-up with a tongue-strap applied.
Warrior Brave has won 2 of his last 3 and he could have more to come as well so along with the favourite he looks one of the main dangers. Queens Carriage has won her last 3 but she’ll need more to land a blow in a contest as deep as this.
York 2.35 JCB Handicap (Class 2) 7f
I thought DAZZLING DAN would be shorter than 9/2 at the time of writing given the promising start he has made to the season. He beat Lethal Lunch nicely at Yarmouth before going close at Newmarket last time out. He runs off the same mark here and I think he will be hard to beat with everything set for another big effort.
If Gifted Ruler had fitness on his side (first run for 350 days) he would be more of a danger as he is improving all the time and has been gelded. The selection definitely has a big advantage with those runs under his belt. Manigordo caught the eye running on late at Hamilton and will appreciate stepping back up in trip so completes the shortlist.
Sandown 2.50 Play Coral “Racing-Super-Series” For Free Handicap (Class 2) 1m
Dark Angel colt KING’S KNIGHT impressed making a winning return at Lingfield in April and with a couple of creditable runs since he can strike again here. That looked a strong handicap at Chester last time and he was given a lot to do making rapid headway in the closing stages. He is off the same mark here and I think he has more wins in him yet. There’s a lot of pace on so it could pan out perfectly for him in the closing stages.
Latest Generation finished down the field behind Hurricane Lane and should step forward from that now but he likes to get on the pace and they might end up going too hard here. Dogged is lightly raced and might be a bigger threat with more to come.
York 3.05 Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes (Listed Race) Class 1 1m6f
This race never has a massive field but 4 runners is disappointing. That said they are all very good horses and are all capable of running at a higher level. Last years winner RED VERDON is the selection and even though he hasn’t been in the best form he has a decent chance of backing up last years performance. He is versatile regarding trip but I do think this 1 mile 6 furlongs really does suit and back at Listed level I am very surprised to see him the outsider of the field.
Makawee is the main danger and I can see why she is favourite with the mares allowance but I feel the ground could be too fast for her. Ranch Hand has finished in front of Red Verdon already this season but that was over a shorter trip and I fancy the selection to reverse the form. Roberto Escobarr has always shown promise and is interesting on the second run after a wind-op but he is hard to trust fully after his latest effort.
Chester 3.20 nationalracehorseweek.uk Handicap (Class 2) 1m41/2f
Quite a few of these in with chances again but I’m happy to side with SIDE SHOT for John and Thady Gosden. This son of Frankel ran promisingly when second at Kempton and stepped forward to win at Doncaster in April. He was only fourth at Haydock last time but the ground was really testing that day and he will be better suited by these conditions. It’s still early days and I’m expecting him to get back on track here.
Classic Lord relished the heavy ground when in front of the selection last time but this faster ground asks another question so I think he’s worth opposing. Glen Again is quite a big price as he has been running consistently and shouldn’t be too far away again.
York 3.40 Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Class 2 6f
Wide open handicap as usual and from the last few runnings it seems the single figure draw has an advantage. AIKIDO is an interesting one as Ger Lyons would have a few decent opportunities for him in Ireland so I usually take note when he sends one over. This horse does look talented but seems to have a few quirks. He won his last two with what seemed to be a bit in hand so a mark of 94 doesn’t seem that bad. He is a decent each way price and with the expected improvement he should go close.
Dark Shift and Skyrunner are similar profiles to the selection and are both potentially big improvers but my selection is a bigger price and has arguably the best form based on his last run. If forced I’d say the latter was the main danger as he did it impressively last time and confidence is high.
ITV Racing Each Way Trixie
With 8 races live on ITV Racing on Saturday and we have included an Each Way Trixie which includes 3 of our best bets on the channel this afternoon. If 2/3 win we should still lock in some good profit.
ITV Racing Each Way Trixie
Chester 1.40 Virginia Plane EYE CATCHER
York 2.35 Dazzling Dan
Sandown 2.50 King’s Knight
Pays 76/1!
ITV Racing Each Way Double
Given it’s another busy Saturday we also have two horses running live on ITV Racing that we fancy to go close at slightly bigger odds. If both place we should still get a return.
