Glorious Goodwood 1.20 Thames Materials Handicap (Class 2) 7f
It’s a tricky start to Saturday’s racing live on ITV so I’ve taken two against the field in the opener. Quintillus would have been my main play in the race but with him now a non runner MASTER ZOFFANY must have a big chance. He has won 2 of his last 3 and really impressed with how he came home strongly from off the pace to score at Chester last month. He’ll need them to go a good gallop but I think there is more in the locker and he should be going close.
I was also impressed with FARASI LANE at Sandown at the start of the month. I know this is tougher but he has been largely overlooked in the market and I think he’s going to run a big race with the promise of more to come. Main dangers include the hat-trick seeking Spirit Of Bermuda and at a bigger price Oo De Lally could run well but does need to bounce back.
Glorious Goodwood 1.55 Unibet Stewards’ Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Stewards’ Cup) (Class 2) 6f
Maximum field set to go to post in the consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup and it is definitely a race that I am having two selections in. The main bet is MUSIC SOCIETY who was only just touched off on his last two runs and gets to run in this off 4lb less. He is drawn low which is usually favoured in this race and with him so well-in he should go close with a bit of luck in-running.
THE LAMPLIGHTER is my second pick at a big price. He loves it at Goodwood with 3 wins and 2 placed efforts over course and distance. He looks to be in good form and a draw of 11 should suit his run style and I expect him to outrun his odds in this. The main danger to the selections is Royal Scimitar who was the best of his group at Newmarket and if drawn better could have easily won that. He gets to run off the same weight and they all have to make sure he doesn’t get an easy lead or will be away and gone. The other one to keep an eye on in the betting is Power Over Me who won at Epsom before losing the race afterwards but goes off the same mark and will be a player if he can show his form in this massive field.
Newmarket (July) 2.10 European Bloodstock News British EBF Fillies’ Nursery Handicap (Class 2) 6f
For a 12-runner field this is wide open and it may pay to go with an each way punt in this and WHISTLEDOWN looks a solid enough option. He has been running really well lately in these nursery handicaps and has gone close on all 3 runs. He is back up to 6 furlongs today which looks like his best trip and with a 7lb claimer onboard I think he is a great each way chance in what looks another open race.
The main danger is Symphony Perfect who will be right there at the finish if showing the same form at 6 furlongs. Of the rest Lady Ayresome dropping into this from running in the Group 3 Albany at Royal Ascot should have a decent chance. Eternal Glory has been nibbled at too for a yard in great form at the moment.
Glorious Goodwood 2.30 Summer Handicap (Class 2) 1m6f
Hard to rule any of these out to be honest so I’ve taken two against the field. PRINCE ALEX is interesting on debut for Michael Bell. He went from strength-to-strength last year winning 5 straight before going off the boil this season. The pick of his runs came over this C&D in May where he went down just a head to Nuits St Georges. The pair pulled readily clear from the rest and while he failed to back that up at Newmarket better is to be expected now and I still think a mark of 89 is within reach.
My second play in the race is Cityscape mare URBAN ARTIST for Hughie Morrison. She won both handicaps she contested in here and at Newmarket last season and has acquitted herself well in defeat in stronger company since. I appreciate her mark has suffered as a result but she is a classy sort and I can see her running a big race under the champ Oisin Murphy. My Frankel and Aaddeey complete the shortlist.
Newmarket (July) 2.45 British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed Race) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) 1m4f
This has been won by some nice fillies down the years and one of my strongest bets on ITV Racing runs here in the shape of VALUE TIP (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE ODDSCHECKER APP). This Dubawi filly arrives here on a hat-trick and while I appreciate plenty of these have more to come she could be the most progressive of them right now. She did it nicely over C&D last time and with further improvement to come up in grade she is a key player. She settled it in good style last time and that suggested she is open to further improvement.
Save A Forest has the form to be a danger but I’m not massively convinced by her with cheekpieces on. I think Camelot filly Yesyes could be a greater danger as she is a perfect 2-2 and has more to offer. This just may come too soon as she could benefit from some more experience. Portfolio has impressed lately too and could run better than her odds suggest.

Glorious Goodwood 3.05 Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) (Class 1) 1m6f
The Lillie Langtry is usually a good race but with WONDERFUL TONIGHT lining up it looks even better than usual. The ground looks as though it won’t be too quick for her and she has to be the one to beat. She won her last 3 at this level or better and after an impressive Hardwicke Stakes win at Royal Ascot on seasonal debut she will be much better for that run. Even with a penalty she is the best on ratings and will take a lot of beating. The only issue is her price but she can’t be opposed.
Albaflora looks to be the main danger and does get an extra 3lb off the selection last time but she has 6 lengths to find from the Hardwicke Stakes and she may have to settle for second again. Of the rest Divinely made up good ground again in the Irish Oaks and could run another consistent race in defeat.
Glorious Goodwood 3.40 Unibet Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 6f
Where to start? What I will say first is I’ve always loved the Stewards’ Cup as it is a race we have done well in down the years. I remember Hoof It winning back in 2011 (crazy to think that is now 10 years ago) and we followed up in 2012 with Hawkeyethenoo. Others that stand out include Magical Memory, Dancing Star and more recently Khaadem a couple of years ago. It’s as competitive as ever and for that reason I’ve taken three against the field. The main play has to be HURRICANE IVOR for William Haggas. This son of Ivawood left that disappointing effort at York miles behind dead-heating at Sandown (looked the outright winner) before going down just a short head to Significantly at Ascot 3 weeks ago. He comfortably beat all those horses drawn on his side so I think that can be marked up. The step back up to 6f looks sure to suit and everything points towards a big run.
GREAT AMBASSADOR won nicely at Kempton in March and then ran well behind Chil Chil at Newmarket and is lightly raced so a mark of 96 could still underestimate his ability. He should relish this big field and has acted well at this track in the past. The money is already coming and he could turn out to be one of the gambles of the race. My final pick is PUNCHBOWL FLYER at a huge price. This horse has won 3 of his last 4 and he was drawn the wrong side in the Wokingham (first home on his side). He carries a penalty and this will demand a career best but he is likeable and I can see him running well especially if they get a bit more rain.
Newmarket 3.55 Joyce And Charlie Guest Memorial Handicap (Class 3) 7f
I know we haven’t seen MODERN NEWS for over a year but he has been gelded since and he still has the potential to be fairly smart. He is a good looking sort and his debut win was quite impressive. He has been beaten twice since but soft ground probably didn’t suit in the Chesham and he bumped into a more forward one at Epsom. He could easily be a cut above these and it’s interesting to see him so prominent in the betting. Connections are clearly anticipating a big run on return.
Final Watch has won 2 of his lat 3 and is improving as well so he looks the danger. I thought Flame Of Freedom was a bit overpriced as she did it well at Brighton and could also have more to offer now handicapping.
Glorious Goodwood 4.10 British European Breeders Fund EBF Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (IRE Incentive Race) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 2) 7f
This looks a tough maiden to call with half the field not running before but as always I will go with one that has form in the book. FLYING SECRET and Khanjar ran big races at Ascot and both were a little stuck for a run late on. I favour the former as he really made big strides when getting daylight and I would say he is the one to beat in this.
Khanjar will be the danger as he wasn’t given a hard time as Crowley may have thought that race was lost so he could have more in the locker. Of the rest you have to keep an eye on Charlie Hills’ pair as he has done well in this race over the last few years. Cephalus was hampered a few times in the race the selection ran in so could be better than the bare form and Killearn is an interesting newcomer that you need to keep an eye on in the market (Hills won this in 2019 with a newcomer).
Glorious Goodwood 4.45 Signature Apprentice Handicap (Class 3) 1m1f
There is a lot of money for Rebel Territory at the time of writing and given he has only had 5 starts there could be lots more to come with the form of his Ascot third working out well. I don’t see enough to make him a strong bet though so I’m taking two against the field in the lucky last. HMS PRESIDENT was back to winning ways at Windsor in May and ran better when third to Strawberry Rock last time having disappointed somewhat at Epsom inbetween. He does have a tricky draw but in first-time cheekpieces it wouldn’t surprise me if they pushed forward and if he gets in a decent position early he would have a very good chance in this field.
Given the shape of the race I’ve also chanced last year’s second OVERWRITE here. He is 6lb lower and while he needs to improve on what we’ve seen lately this track clearly suits and from a handicapping perspective he has a great shout. Jonny Peate is good value for his 7lb claim too so that’s another notable positive.
