Newbury 1.45 Denford Stakes (Listed Race) (formerly The Washington Singer Stakes) Class 1 (2yo) 7f

The Denford Stakes rarely attracts a big field but it is an interesting little race with some horses with real potential vying to take this Listed contest. MASEKELA has the form in the book after running huge in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket to finish second by a short head. If he runs to that level he will be hard to beat here.

The rest of the field would have to improve to match that performance and the dangers Bayside Boy and Seattle King who were impressive first time out winners have the scope to step forward but they still have it to prove at this level. Bayside Boy I think could get closest to the selection.

Newmarket (July) 2.00 MansionBet Bet £10 Get £20 Fillies’ Handicap Class 2 (3yo+ 0-105) 1m6f

I have this between the top 2 in the betting and it’s Australia filly GOOLWA I fancy to come out on top. She didn’t show a great deal on debut so was sent off 33/1 on return up to a mile and half on just her second start and ran out a convincing winner staying on strongly. She was pitched into a decent race next time and didn’t run badly in fourth and then was denied just a head at Ascot on her turf debut last month. Back at Kempton last time she ran out a convincing winner and stepping up to 1m6f for the first time I think there’s good reason to think she’ll improve again. She is up just 4lb and looks to have a great chance.

Midrarr has won her last two but this does look tougher. I see her more as a grinder over this trip so she might just find herself tapped for toe but if things do pan out favourably she could be the main danger. Canford Cliffs filly Eileendover is best of the rest on handicap debut but needs to improve to have a say against the top pair.

Newbury 2.20 BetVictor Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Group 3) Class 1 (3yo+) 1m51/2f

It’s good to see HUKUM back here again this year to try and retain his crown after a fairly comfortable win in this race last year. He does carry a penalty here but he is rated at least 8lb better than anything in this field so it shouldn’t make much difference. He was last seen winning well at York in a Group 3. That was after he was slightly outclassed in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot but the form has worked out really well. If he runs to the level of either of those runs he will win this.

I don’t think the opposition are that strong but if one was going to give him something to do it would be Recovery Run who gets the 3 year old allowance in this. He was short of room at Goodwood so will likely be better here and if he proves he can see out the trip he is the main danger.

Newmarket (July) 2.35 MansionBet Beaten By A Head Grey Horse Handicap Class 4 (3yo + 0-85) 6f

A race just for grey horses but that doesn’t make it any easier to find the winner! I do think it’s a good opportunity for MITROSONFIRE to follow up though. This son of Lethal Force has won 3 of his last 5 and improved to beat a good horse in Crazy Luck at Ascot last time. That was a career best on the figures and with Stefano Cherchi negating the rise he has real likeable claims again. He is likely to be ridden forward so should get first crack on a few of these.

Devil’s Angel got up despite hanging left at Newmarket last month and while he is respected I’m happy to take him on as he isn’t the most straightforward. Case Key cashed in off a reduced mark at Nottingham and remains well treated on old form, could be the main danger.

Newbury 2.55 BetVictor Handicap Class 3 (3yo+ 0-95) 7f

This race usually attracts a double-figure field but it is just 8 going to post on Saturday. Even with this smaller field it looks pretty competitive and it is hard to rule out half the field. I have sided with ARATUS who is under a length away from being 3 wins from 3 runs. His last two runs especially have been taking with his first run after a wind operation seeing him run out a 7 length winner whilst carrying a penalty in Listed company. He gets an opening mark of 94 which is high for an opening mark but the way he won his last two suggest he could be a Group horse in the making and is the one to beat.

Magical Wish rates as my main danger as he has been holding his form well and only has a 3lb penalty for a win at Goodwood last month. He may have more in the locker over this trip and potentially over further so can make his mark on this race.

Ripon 3.10 William Hill Silver Trophy Handicap (Consolation Race For The William Hill Great St Wilfrid Stakes) (Class 2 (3yo+) 6f

A typically competitive renewal of the Silver Trophy so it won’t surprise you that I’ve taken 2 against the field. I do like CITRON MAJOR but he is drifting as I’m writing this so might be worth another look in the market come post time. He is a past C&D winner off a mark of 83 (his current mark) and he was back to winning ways at York last time so should be spot on for this now. That win here last year really was quite impressive so the track clearly plays to his strengths.

My second and final play and arguably my strongest at the odds is COOPERATION for last year’s winning trainer Richard Fahey. This horse had won 2 of his last 3 before blowing out at Doncaster last time. If you put a line through that he would have a big chance here especially seeing as he has already won over this C&D. He is largely unexposed and could have plenty more to come.

Newbury 3.30 BetVictor Hungerford Stakes (Group 2) Class 1 (3yo+) 7f

Danyah has been taken out this morning as he was wrong in behind. Hopefully it isn’t anything too serious and he makes a quick recovery. I’ve decided to take a chance on SACRED now for Haggas. This Exceed and Excel filly looked really promising over 7f in April and while she didn’t back that up in the Guineas back down in trip she has plenty going for her here. I know fillies don’t have the best record in this but I’m hoping she can buck that trend.

Motakhayyel was an impressive winner on penultimate start but did run a bit flat last time and has enough to prove at present. Dreamloper could emerge as the danger as she did impress last time and while this is tougher she could be on an upward curve again now.

Ripon 3.45 William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap Class 2 (3yo+) 6f

A cracking renewal of the Great St Wilfrid and I’ve got to take 3 against the field. The thriving MR WAGYU tops the betting and you’d be foolish to rule out another big run following his Stewards’ Sprint romp at Goodwood last month. His form has been ridiculously consistent and I know this is a big ask off a career-high mark but if he gets on the speed it’s going to take a well handicapped horse to peg him back.

C&D winner LAMPANG may be one of those given he got within a neck of victory off this mark at Haydock on penultimate start. He had excuses last time and still looks to be in form. He won over this track and trip as a 2yo and looks primed for a big run. Lastly MANIGORDO has proved a bit frustrating but I do think he has a big one in him and this track should suit. He ran flat at York but if bouncing back could play a hand in the finish.
