Curragh 4.15
Not the most inspiring race to kick off a very good card at the Curragh on Friday night. Quite a few of these haven’t had a run yet and most of the ones that have run haven’t shown much at all. BLUEGRASS ran with credit in a similar event just over 2 weeks ago and the yards horses usually take a run to see them at their best so I expect him to be far better here. He is entered in plenty of Group races so they obviously think he is a fair prospect and he looks the one to beat up to a mile now.
Stablemate Sweden is the likely danger with similar Group entries, he may just need the run but he is bred to be an above average horse. Of the rest I would keep an eye out for any support for Joseph’s O’Brien’s pair as they look solid prospects on breeding.
Curragh 4.45
Joseph O’Brien looks to have a nice filly on his hands in the shape of ALBULA. She is by Galileo and she made the perfect start brushing aside 13 rivals at Naas at the start of the month. She showed a professional attitude under pressure and kept on well in the closing stages. She is expected to be a lot sharper now and with further improvement to come I think she’ll make it a perfect 2 from 2.
Lullaby makes her debut for Aidan O’Brien and if she is forward enough she could easily emerge as the main danger. She is well related and holds some fancy entries so has to be respected – the market should reveal more in the run up to the race.
Curragh 5.15
The second of the Group 3s looks an intriguing affair with a few of these dropping into this from Group 1s and others that could improve past this level. I am going to side with SHALE who ran well in defeat at the track in June behind Thundering Nights – that looked a very good renewal of the Pretty Polly Stakes. She is already a Group 1 winner at the Curragh in the Moyglore last year and comes good around this time of year. If stepping forward from her Pretty Polly run she is the one to beat.
Champers Elysees has been a disappointing horse to follow this season and even with her trainer Johnny Murtagh flying currently to give these 3 year olds weight in her current vein of form I think she is beatable. Solene Lilyette is another who is improving but being a 4 year old she has to give away plenty of weight which could make it tough to follow up her latest win.
Curragh 5.45
Aidan O’Brien has dominated this race down the years and has won 4 of the last 5 renewals. He has just 2 runners this year though and neither look to be running well enough to have a say. I have this between the top 2 in the market but I prefer the second fav at the time of writing SACRED BRIDGE for Ger Lyons. This Bated Breath filly is a perfect 3-3 and I thought she did well to get on top in the closing stages in a fiercely competitive Median Auction Race at Naas at the start of the month. This is obviously tougher stepping into Group company now but she is still quite raw so there could be a fair bit more to come just yet. She looks to have been well placed and I want to keep her on side.
Ladies Church impressed visually beating Pennine Hills last time and that performance was backed up by the clock so she is the most obvious danger to the selection. Johnny Murtagh is in good form too so no doubt she’ll have her supporters. Of the rest Sam Maximus makes the journey over and has form that ties in with Lusail so also has a squeak.
Curragh 6.15
With 16 runners declared for this competitive handicap GRAMMATA looks a solid each way bet. Prior to her last run she ran big races in two very good handicaps and she looked to have a great chance at Naas last time before running no sort of race. The vet found nothing but I think this is the perfect race to get back on track in. Izzy Clifton is back on her claiming 7lb and if they can repeat her run in the handicap at the track last month she will go very close at a decent each way price.
The main danger in this race is Only Spoofing who ran really well in the Stewards’ Cup consolation race at Goodwood. I think he will prefer the forecast quicker ground and off a 1lb lower mark he should go very well.
Curragh 6.45
Obviously one of the toughest races on the card tonight with no less than 30 runners lining up for the Irish Cambridgeshire. The ground was desperate last year so at least the weather has held up this time around which does make it a little easier – I think anyway. It won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field and my main play has to be TOSHIZOU for Joseph O’Brien. This Galileo colt could be ahead of his mark on what we’ve seen so far. He was beaten just 2 lengths at Cork up to 1m2f in April and again ran a cracker when fourth back down to this trip here at the start of the month. He wasn’t given a hard time of it after being hampered and I think there is more to come for sure.
Given the each way nature of the race I’ve also had a saver on PIERRE LAPIN. This horse promised plenty for Roger Varian and while he didn’t really deliver I did think he shaped well on debut for this yard when third at Naas. He goes handicapping now and given how lightly raced he is I think he could run a big race if primed for this. Dangers include Eagle’s Flight who was left poorly placed last time and Crystal Black who is massively unexposed and represents top connections.
Curragh 7.15
This is one of the better Nursery handicaps I have seen lately and there are plenty you could make a case for but I really like TUT TUT. She has some top form to her name already starting with her debut finishing a length behind Velocidad who has won a Group 2 since. She was then pitched into a very good Ballyhane Stakes finishing only 5 lengths behind a very smart winner. She then shed her maiden-tag in what looked a solid race. She still has plenty to come and I think she is the one they have to beat.
Howth, Malayan and Recurrent Dream will all have their say in this with Malayan being the biggest threat after two nice wins at Roscommon and Galway and can give the selection most to think about if ready to go not long after her last run.
Curragh 7.45
The nightcap doesn’t get much easier with 25 lining up for this Apprentice Handicap. I’m chancing two against the field and I’ve tried to look away from the top of the betting for this. FRIDTJOF NANSEN has been mega consistent this season finishing 2362 and only went down half a length at Galway last time. He was only headed inside the final 100 yards and off the same mark here he looks as though he is ready to strike. The trip, ground and track all look ideal and there is lots to like despite how competitive this looks.
My second play in the race has to be PARKERS HILL who is a son of No Nay Never. He has been running well all season and again was only denied 2 lengths last time. The step back up to 7f can help and I think he has it in him to go close here too. She’s In The Game continues to run well and definitely has a squeak while Hightown Heights is obviously unexposed and has already attracted plenty of support for handicap debut which could be significant.
