Epsom 2.00

Racing from Epsom Downs on Bank Holiday Monday! It’s a tricky maiden to kick off with only 2 of the 6 runners having form to their name. Neither Shabano and Lordman have achieved all that much though and I do think it’s worth chancing one of the newcomers. The most interesting of them looks to be New Approach colt ENKINDLE who is bred to be pretty useful and Mark Johnston’s debutants have been going well. If he has ability I think there is potential he could learn on the job and win this and is doesn’t look a strong race.

Shabano is the best of the pair with experience but he did weaken in the closing stages at Nottingham and he needs to improve to get competitive. Due Diligence filly and fellow newcomer Psychic Change might be the one to give the selection most to think about.

Enkindle 2/1

Epsom 2.35

Only the 5 runners for this sprint handicap and I don’t think any of these other than SAATTY are well handicapped. He won a small field maiden at Chelmsford in a really strange manner, going to the lead 3 out and was uncontested from there. He runs off 70 on Monday and considering he beat a 71 rated horse by over 7 lengths 2 weeks ago he is the one to beat at the weights and that’s very much being reflected in the betting with him an even money fav at the time of writing.

The main danger could be Secret Handsheikh who won a claimer over 6 furlongs earlier this month and even though this is a better race he may have a bit to come over this trip. Ancient Times won at Lingfield but was then held at Newmarket so has enough to find on the balance.

Epsom 2.35

Saatty 1/1

Epsom 3.10

I’m keen to give GREAT KING another chance here. This colt by Shamardal looked promising winning at Newcastle in April. I know he has failed to build on that since but he put that disappointing Ascot run behind him shaping much better beaten two and a half lengths at Doncaster last time. I do still think he has a bit of wiggle room off his current mark so he should get seriously competitive here. This track could bring out the best in him and I think 3/1 is fairly generous at the time of writing.

Titan Rock was a good second at Chester 9 days ago beaten just a head by Fools Rush In and before that he was only 3 lengths behind Guru at Ascot so on recent form he has to have a major say here. A mark of 90 looks about right though so he is going to need to produce a career best to take this. Corazon Espinado at this track is best of the rest.

Epsom 3.45

Not the deepest Amateur Derby Handicap and I really like the chances of CEMHAAN. He ran over course and distance in July finishing second off a mark of 77. He technically gets to run off the same mark today as Matthew Ennis takes 2lb off. That was the best time figure over this trip and if he is in the same form he is the one to beat.

The opposition isn’t that strong but Great Esteem would rate the main danger back down to a mark of 86 and he could be well handicapped considering his last win came off of a mark of 88. Maori Knight often attracts support but has become a bit frustrating. He goes up in trip now and I’m not sure he is screaming out for a mile and a half. I think it’s likely to go against him if anything.

Epsom 4.20

I think this can go to Ralph Beckett with PATIENT DREAM. This son of Al Kazeem has won 2 of his last 4 including at this track back in April. He is lightly raced and he will find this easier than that handicap he contested at Goodwood last month. I think he remains open to further improvement especially over this trip so he gets a confident vote to see these off. I think an ideal scenario would be if Fast Steps goes forward and he can just get a nice toe in before running him down. I don’t expect him to be far away from the pace.

Fast Steps is probably the danger as he just raced too freely at Goodwood last time and will need to judge the fractions better to have any sort of chance of hanging on late here. Wait For The Lord might be the outsider but I do still think she has potential so could run better than her odds suggest. Maybe worth backing without the favourite.

Epsom 4.20

Patient Dream 7/4

Epsom 4.55

This looks a wide open contest with it hard to rule any of these out. I have sided with PRINCE ROCK who has been in great form over a mile and 63 looks like a mark he can take advantage of. His run here in July where he was third by a length looks a better race than this and a repeat would see him go close at a decent price.

There are plenty of dangers with Curtiz and Yanifer looking like they still have more to come at this trip after finishing first and second at Ffos Las earlier in the month. Mythical Madness may not have much in his handicap mark at the age of 10 but he does love Epsom so will go well here too.

Epsom 5.30

I do like The Cruising Lord but he can prove a little frustrating and he failed to back up that win in June last time finishing nearer last than first. He has plenty of ability and will likely run well but I’ve got to be with POET’S MAGIC in her current vein of form. She has won 2 of her last 3 and in between bumped into the promising Improvised over this C&D. A 7lb rise certainly demands more but she is an honest type who looks sure to give her running. Under positive tactics I’m not sure she’ll come back to them and she is by far and away the most likely winner for me.

The Cruising Lord will be the danger if giving his running but there might be value in looking elsewhere. F;ame Of Freedom remains unexposed and if she can take a step in the right direction she might be the one to give the favourite a race. Hard to see any of the others springing a surprise.
