Doncaster 1.45
There’s been some big priced winners of this in recent years (last four winners 16/1, 14/1, 25/1 and 12/1) and it is a notoriously hard handicap to solve. It won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field. My main play was going to be Jawwaal but he has been taken out this morning. The money has been relentless for MONDAMMEJ so I’ve decided to cover him after his deserved win at Haydock last week. He had caught the eye several times in defeat so certainly wasn’t winning out of turn. He is up just 3lb but if in the same form will go close.
At a price I’m going to have a saver on DIGITAL for Kevin Ryan. This 3yo has been running well all season and he caught the eye when third to Whenthedealinsdone at Goodwood and backed that up to win at Ripon next time. He went down just a neck to Blackrod at York and is clearly still improving. He is unexposed compared to many of these and I think 14/1 is just too big at the time of writing. Hurricane Ivor has plenty going for him again so is definitely a danger but favourites don’t have a great record in this so he is going to need to show his best form to see these off. Mondammej and Whenthedealinsdone complete the shortlist in a tough renewal.
Chester 2.00
Beaten less than 2 lengths in the Ebor at York last month ALOUNAK looks to have a major shout here. He is the joint top-rated horse in the field but has fitness on side against Alignak and that is fancied to make the difference especially in the forecasted soft ground. Alignak did cap off a fine season last campaign with a convincing win in this race but he has clearly had issues since and has had plenty of time off the track.
Throne Hall put that Newmarket disappointment behind him when beaten just a neck by Sam Cooke at York last time and the step back up in trip can help so he looks comfortably best of the rest. Invite will find this easier but even so still needs more.
Doncaster 2.20
This has been won by some smart young horses down the years. Hannon has taken the last two renewals with Threat and Chindit and Lusail won’t be an easy horse to get the better of but I was so taken with REACH FOR THE MOON in the Solario at Sandown and he looks a colt with considerable potential. I think he can win this before having a crack at Group 1 company. He is such a scopey sort I highly doubt we have seen the best of him yet and if he improves he is going to be a danger to all here.
Bayside Boy is talented and overcame inexperience to make a winning debut. He was only edged out a head last time and should do better with that experience under his belt but he is bumping into two smart prospects here. Twilight Jet is held by Lusail and is looking exposed in comparison so hard to see him getting competitive.
Chester 2.35
Mancini pulled readily clear with the improving 3yo Solent Gateway over 2 miles here last time so it’s no surprise to see him at the head of the betting but he will face competition for the lead here and I think on value grounds it may pay to side with the likeable HOCHFELD with promising 7lb claimer Jonny Peate in the saddle. This son of Cape Cross has won twice here and ran a cracker when third in the Chester Cup back in May behind Falcon Eight and The Grand Visir. He found trouble when down the field at Haydock last week and looks off a good mark if things drop right.
Nuits St Georges failed to land the hat-trick at Goodwood but looks the type to bounce back. He will go forward though and might get into a bit of an early battle for the lead with Mancini which wouldn’t be ideal. Of the rest Au Clair De Lune should relish this sharper test and looks quite a big price so definitely one to consider with Hayler Turner getting the leg up.
Leopardstown 2.45
This looks a special renewal and I’m certainly not taking Tarnawa lightly as she looks a very talented mare but ST MARK’S BASILICA looks one of the most exciting horses in training and the way he left them standing in the Coral-Eclipse was so impressive. Even if this turns tactical his turn of foot can get him out of trouble and he gets a confident vote to extend the winning spree.
Poetic Flare shouldn’t be overlooked either as he has bumped into Alcohol Free and Palace Pier the last twice. This looks another notch up though and even his best form might see him come up short. Patrick Sarsfield just looks completely outclassed by all 3 rivals so impossible to see him landing a blow.
Doncaster 3.00
This looks a good race between the front 3 in the market but I’m confident LANEQASH can come out on top. This colt by Cable Bay ran a cracker denied just a length in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury last time and that run came out very well on the clock too. He has only had 4 starts and is sure to keep improving for a while yet. This is competitive but I think he brings the most potential to the table and I’m looking forward to seeing him run again.
Danyah is a horse I’ve liked for a while and he showed a cracking attitude to hold them off in the International at Ascot. This is tougher though and he will need to improve again. Glorious Journey was a good third at York and also has to enter calculations. Hard to imagine any of the others springing a surprise as the market looks spot on to me.
Doncaster 3.35
It’s hard to pick holes in HURRICANE LANE here. He galloped rivals into submission in France when last seen and has won 5 of his 6 starts now. He is getting better and this extra distance could even see him improve again. He is bred to stay this far and the way he hit the line the last day he certainly wasn’t stopping.
In terms of a danger I know Mojo Star is being well touted by connections and he did finish in front of Hurricane Lane when second in the Derby. That form was readily reversed in the Irish equivalent though and even after his 4-length win at Newbury it’s hard to see him turning the tables despite the trip likely to suit. I actually think Ottoman Emperor might finish second. Better value too.
