Haydock 4.10

The Sunday Series returns and we head to Haydock today. A fiercely competitive apprentice handicap to kick off and I’m not going to hide away from the fact I found this hard to dissect. I’ve ended up on FOUR ADAAY but I’d be lying if I said this was a bullish selection. This filly has progressed nicely this term winning 3 times already. That was a tough race she ran in at York last time and if she finds this easier and gets a better toe in I think she could run better than the 9/1 is suggesting. Given the strength of some of her form a mark of 75 might still underestimate her a bit.

Glorious Rio was given a good ride by Jonny Peate to complete the hat-trick at Newcastle last week and it’s no surprise to see him well punted for this. He is up in grade though and he’ll need another career best to land the four-timer. Ready Freddie Go is on a hat-trick and should threaten but Modular Magic might be the main danger. He remains unexposed and there is potential for him to dictate here which makes him very interesting.

Haydock 4.35

A lot of money for Manigordo here but he has become a bit of a cliff horse for me and his overall profile has become frustrating so I’m happy to leave him alone. I like the chances of ANCIENT TIMES with Hayley Turner in the saddle. This son of Exceed and Excel has won 2 of his last 3 now and that latest win at Epsom has worked out notably well since. The second Marlay Park beat the improving Gosnay Gold next time comfortably and the third Saatty did well to win his next start at Kempton. A 3lb rise looks perfectly fair and as competitive as this is I think he is going to go close.

Given the nature of the race I’ve also backed JORDAN ELECTRICS each way at a price. He has won twice over this trip this summer and wasn’t;t disgraced back down to 5f behind Primo’s Comet at Musselburgh last month. He should be spot on for this now and his current mark certainly doesn’t look insurmountable. Gone under the radar a bit I think. Prince Of Bel Lir is probably the main danger as he was a good second to Biggles at Sandown and is off an unchanged mark. Smeaton’s Light completes the shortlist.

Curragh 4.40

Dermot Weld is looking for a hat-trick of wins in the Irish St Leger with SEARCH FOR A SONG and given how lightly raced she is this is likely to have been the target all season. I know she probably doesn’t arrive here in the best form but she was given a very quiet ride behind Helvic Dream in the Tattersalls Gold Cup and if I’m being honest it almost looked like a prep for this. I’m sure she still retains her ability and if this pans out favourably she is going to be staying on strongly in the closing stages. She can be keen so she will be ridden cold again and with plenty of pace on she will relish coming through rivals and hopefully getting there late in the day.

Twilight Payment looks the danger as he put in a tough performance to win the trial for this last time beating Princess Zoe. He was behind the selection in the last two renewals of this though so I find it hard to see him turning the tables. The one that appeals at a double-figure price is BARRINGTON COURT for Jessica Harrington. This mare has plenty of ability and if they go too hard that could bring her into it late. She has a bit of ground to make up with Twilight Payment and Emperor Of The Sun on that last run but the former is a decent yardstick and he is likely to be bang there in this which makes her too big a price if she can find a little more.

Haydock 5.00

A whole field of debutants so hard to back anything in here with any real confidence. Clive Cox does well with newcomers so WHOPUTFIFTYINYOU gets a tentative vote. This Twilight Son colt cost £82,000 and is a half-brother to 3 winners including Whisper Not and Jess. He is bred to get further than this but if he is sharp enough first-up he could go close. He is one of the most expensive purchases in the field so connections will be hopeful and it’s no surprise to see him hovering around the top of the market for this contest.

Dark Angel colt Al Barez might be the main danger to the selection. He is the most expensive purchase in the field costing £185,000. His dam was an Irish 1000 Guineas winner and he is very well related. Trainer Tom Clover has had just 1 2yo winner from 23 runners in the last couple of years though so that is offputting. It will be interesting to see how he runs though as he is clearly going to have a bright future. Mother Shipton is getting well backed and is a half-sister to several winners so is interesting too.

Musselburgh 5.20

The money has been relentless for RAVENSCRAIG CASTLE this morning. This son of Nathaniel landed back-to-back wins at Carlisle and Ayr on return before running a crack when third to Valley Forge in a competitive handicap at York last month. He was given a lot to do on that occasion and hit the line strong. I think if he had been asked for his effort sooner he may well have gone a lot closer but Andrew Mullen was caught napping off the pace. He remains open to further improvement trying 2 miles for the first time and he is bred to keep progressing with time and experience. He is up 5lb which is a bit harsh without winning but I think there’s lots to like so he is a confident play.

Vino Victoria beat a good horse in Classic Lord at Sandown and then relished his first crack at this trip winning at Kempton last time. Another 4lb rise is going to demand a career best though and I think that just tips the balance to the selection who has greater scope for progress. The Vegas Raider is tough and is also on a hat-trick but is up 8lb which looks a bit harsh. He’ll have to run to a big figure to win again. Haizoom is a likeable filly and she might run better than her odds are suggesting. Kraken Power has too much to find.

Haydock 5.30

Another tough race to work out but what I do think is Mystery Fox is too short in the betting. He is no 2/1 chance in my book and there is much better value elsewhere. FLAMING LORD was only beaten a length at Nottingham last month and he makes his handicap debut off what looks a lenient mark of just 76. He is gradually improving and if he takes another step forward he should definitely be in the shake-up here. The front pair came nicely clear last time and that filly looks to have decent potential for Andrew Balding. Given how he travelled last time the drop back to 7f will suit and if he gets on the lead here he might be hard to pass late.

Ribchester colt Exminster made a bright start winning on debut at Redcar in July. He failed to back that up over a mile at Ripon last month so the drop back to 7f could see him progress again. Certainly one to note in opposition. Outgate has a bit to prove off the back of that last effort but it’s early days and he still has potential. St Andrew’s Castle fared best of those held up at Thirsk and might be value to run into a place in an open race.

Curragh 5.45

This has gone to a couple of local trainers in the past few years with Peter Fahey winning it with Hamley in 2018 and Johnny Murtagh winning with Sonnyboyliston last year. It’s ridiculously competitive this time around so I’ve gone with two against the field. I think it’s interesting Aidan O’Brien relies on just one horse in LOUGH DERG here. He has proved a bit frustrating since making a winning debut but while his last few runs leave something to be desired he was only actually beaten 3 lengths last time and is down to a mark of 101 now. He carries a nice weight on handicap debut and definitely catches the eye. He does have quite a bit of pace around him so Ryan Moore should be able to get some cover and if he bounces back he could be way too big in the betting.

The other horse I liked was also a 3yo STAR HARBOUR for Adie McGuinness. This son of Sea The Stars sprung a big surprise at 22/1 at Navan in May and won again at Killarney in July. He acquitted himself well in defeat when fifth over a mile here last month and back up to what could be his optimum trip of 1m2f I think he could be handicapped to strike. He’ll need some luck in-running in a field this big but he does tick a few boxes and like my first selection looks quite big in the market. Mosala found plenty off the bridle to win at Leopardstown and while he couldn’t back that up last time he is still a major player here. Finians Bay and Mirann also catch the eye and complete the shortlist.

Haydock 6.00

I think the improving VALUE TIP can win again at Haydock on Sunday. She has took her form up a notch since joining Grant Tuer and ran out a convincing winner over this trip at Carlisle last month, staying on well. Things didn’t exactly go to plan up in trip at Newcastle last time but she certainly wasn’t disgraced beaten less than length into third with them nicely clear from the rest. It looked quite a good race for the grade as I rate the second Johnny Boom who looked a bit unlucky not to hold on. She runs off the same mark here and back on turf there could be more to come yet.

Arabian Romance is another filly who should enjoy going back over a mile so she looks the biggest danger to the selection. Turandot impressed winning over C&D in July and while she wasn’t at her best at Thirsk last time back at this venue she also has to enter calculations.

Haydock 6.25

I’ve been a big fan of Strawman and he comes here chasing a four-timer but this won’t be easy. He is up another 2lb and this is by far and away his toughest test. I’ve decided to put forward FAIRMAC in opposition. This son of Lethal Force has won 2 of his last 5 and beat a horse at the top of his game over C&D last time. Miramichi had won four in a row heading into that so I think the form has substance. He is up 4lb and off a career high mark now but at 9/1 I have to include him each way. He finds plenty for pressure so while he might not be the most flashy that is what you need in a difficult race like this. Miramichi reopposes so shouldn’t be too far away either off 4lb better terms.

I’ve also had an each way saver on STARFIGHTER for Mark Loughnane. I thought he shaped as though he’d improve for the run when finishing a creditable sixth at Sandown sent off 66/1 last month. He is only 3lb above a winning mark and I know one or two others might be better treated but he has been completely dismissed in the market and at 25/1 I couldn’t leave him out. He can sometimes be given too much to do so hopefully Hector Crouch has him better placed here to play a role in the finish. Yorkshire Lady impressed at Sandown and looks the one to beat. Cadeau D’Or deserved to get his head in front at Ffos Las and he is also a big player in another open race.

Haydock 6.55

I’m surprised EMARATY HERO is available to back at 2/1 at Haydock on Sunday. This son of Lope De Vega is chasing a hat-trick after winning impressively again at York last week. He won going away in the end and while this is quite a drastic step up in trip he looks all about stamina and I think he can bring up the hat-trick here.

Snowalot is a likeable type and he was always coming home best to win at Goodwood last time. The second Ravens Ark is a useful yardstick so that’s good form. He is the obvious danger to the selection and I’m confident they are the forecast. Goobinator clocked a career best at York and a 4lb rise looks fair given the form has worked out well. Looks best of the rest.
