Ayr 1.55
Euchen Glen is 3lb clear on official ratings so I can see him having his supporters but he had a tough race in the Ebor last time and it’s been a long season now given that was his eighth run. In comparison Roger Varian’s 4yo JUAN ELCANO is having just his third run since a wind op and remains lightly raced. I know things didn’t go to plan behind Mishriff at York but he was dining at the top table there (went off 40/1) and you can put a line through that. He drops down to Listed company again and he is proven at this level. He showed that beating Patrick Sarsfield at Ascot on reappearance. He could still have more to come so gets a confident vote.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Euchen Glen totally blew out so Maydanny might be the danger. He showed a good attitude to win the Unibet Golden Mile back in July and while he was a bit flat at Haydock if he bounces back he could give the selection some sort of a race. Hard to see anything else springing an upset.
Newbury 2.15
This is one of the more open renewals of this Group 3 sprint with the majority of these in with a chance on the pick of their form. I am siding with TIS MARVELLOUS who is getting better with age. Clive Cox’s 7 year old romped home in Listed company last time beating a solid field and the time figure he achieved would be capable of winning much better races. He is on a hat-trick here and if running to the form he did last time he will go very close. He is an uncomplicated type so I expect him to go forward and just track one or two through before hopefully getting the better of the argument in the closing stages.
There are plenty of dangers with Khaadem favourite at the time of writing and King’s Lynn who I rate as the main threat back at 5 furlongs where he could be dangerous based on his King’s Stand run. Hurricane Ivor came good in the Portland at Doncaster last time and would also be interesting if taking up this engagement.
Ayr 2.30
It’s Ayr Silver Cup time now and I really like the chances of BLACKROD for Michael Dods. This colt by Mayson is just getting better and better and I know this will be his toughest test to date but the attitude he showed to get up and win at Newmarket over this trip was quite taking. He backed that up readily back down in trip at York last month, again beating a strong field. He is progressing fast and a 3lb rise looks very fair back up to 6f now. He has plenty going for him and I expect him to go off shorter than 11/2 so that’s a price worth taking.
With 25-runners heading to post I’ve got to back one at a bigger price too and BICKERSTAFFE is a colt I still think has potential to do better. He is also by Mayson and he went into my notes beating Popmaster way back in April. He took a while to back that up before lengthening impressively to win at Ascot in July. I thought he had excuses at Goodwood last time and while he is 3lb higher he could run a big race here. Dangers include Royal Scimitar who chased home Popmaster (runs in the big one later) at Ascot last time. Bergerac also arrives in great form and completes the shortlist.
Newbury 2.50
Another small field considering it is a £70,000 pot on offer. It is an Arc Trial by name only really as I don’t expect any of these to be competing in the Arc this year. AL AASY is the only one entered in the Arc currently (33/1 shot) and this looks like his race to lose on form and ratings. He is rated the best in the field by at least 9lb. His last two runs have seen him lose out by a neck in the Group 1 Coronation Cup and a Group 2 at Newmarket. This looks a lot easier and will take some beating. He is a strong travelling type who should move into it going best before hopefully seeing them off comfortably.
David Simcock has a great record in the race but I would be surprised if 95-rated Ad Infinitum was good enough to win this and is the outsider of the field. The other 3 are all dangerous but I think it could be Ilaraab who is most likely to chase the selection home now he is back down in trip.
Ayr 3.05
Ger Lyons sends over Irish raider Head Mistress and she will prove popular given she is a perfect 2-2 having won at Down Royal and the Curragh last time. She has to be feared but I think she’s short enough in the betting and I prefer HALA HALA ATHMANI for Kevin Ryan. This filly by Dabirsim also made a winning start creating quite a big impression at Carlisle last month. With further improvement to come she could remain unbeaten here. It does look a renewal with strength in depth though so she will need to step forward again.
I also like SADMAH at a big price. I thought she won despite not being fit at Chester last time. She definitely has room to sharpen up and this is likely to have been the target so I think she might have gone under the radar a bit. Scot’s Grace and at a double-figure price Choux complete the shortlist.
Newbury 3.25
This is a wide open renewal of the Dubai Duty Free Handicap with some decent horses at the top of the market headed by ARAMAIC who has won his last two with ease and only getting 7lb for his impressive win at York last time leaves him on a mark of 94. He looks capable of better than that mark and will likely be a Group level performer in the making if improving at his current rate. I think there will be plenty of money for him so expect him to go off shorter than 4/1 (current price).
The competitive nature of this race means there are plenty of dangers the best of which could well be Mo’assess who is making his handicap debut and could improve again. King Of Clubs won a nice handicap at Sandown by a small margin and the extra 7lb could make it tricky.
Ayr 3.40
I think GREAT AMBASSADOR has huge potential now he is putting it altogether and the way he has won his last two races suggest he is a Group performer in the making. He was always getting on top at York last time and looks to be improving. He has the right profile for this race and is a deserved favourite at 5/1. The only doubt I have is if the heavens open and the ground turns on the soft side. That might count against him given his last two wins have come on a fast surface. I’ll be keeping an eye on the forecast but if Ayr manage to avoid the showers he will be a warm order.
A lot like the Silver Cup with 25-runners heading to post I’m also going to back one at a double-figure price in stablemate POPMASTER. He is also going the right way beating Berferac at Donny before running a bit flat at the Shergar Cup. He quickly put that behind him with an impressive display last time though and could still have more in the locker. His form stacks up and with Hollie Doyle in the saddle all looks set for a big run! Tons of dangers in a race like this with Stewards’ Cup winner Commanche Falls probably heading them. Just Frank and Bielsa also loom as threats.
Newbury 4.00
The big race of the day at Newbury and DHABAB looks the likely hot favourite for this after Native Trail made his Superlative form at Newmarket look even better when hacking up in the National Stakes at the weekend. I am glad to see him back down in trip as I think 6 furlongs at Newbury is perfect for him. I think he will step-up on his last run and if he does that he will win this.
Gubbass and Gis A Sub represent great form in Group 1s and 2s and will be major players in this with the former being the highest rated in the field. There are dangers throughout the field and you would have to chuck Fearby in the mix as well but if Dhabab is at his best he will be hard to beat.
Ayr 4.15
Tricky race to close out ITV Racing on Saturday so it won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field. My main play would have to be CRUYFF TURN who has won 4 of his last 6 and 3 of his last 4 now. He showed a cracking attitude to hold on at York last month and up just 3lb he looks to have a major shout once again. Marie’s Diamond and Shelir could go forward but there is still potential for the selection to get the lead and if he does he might be hard to pass in the closing stages.
If there is too much pace pressure then HONG KONG HARRY might be worth chancing. He looked a horse on the upgrade winning twice over 7f here and just raced too keenly on return at Lingfield before getting outpaced. He is very interesting stepping up to a mile now and with more to come he could come out on top here. This big field should help him settle and he is definitely one of the more interesting contenders at a price. Shelir, Dance Fever and Garden Oasis all have claims and I couldn’t put you off in an open race to finish.
