Newbury 1.15

This race usually proves to be a bit of a puzzle with only 3 of the runners having run previously. The trends also seem to have a fairly even split between newcomers and horses with experience taking this race. I am going to take one with experience as I really liked the last run of DARK SWANSONG who clearly stepped forward from his debut and went close a Salisbury despite not having a clear run. The winner of that race has gone close in a Group 3 since then so it’s clearly good form. He should come on again on his third run and it will take a good newcomer to beat him.

Richard Hannon has a good record in this race so I would make Witch Hunter the main danger. He cost a fair bit at €130,000 and is well related being a half-brother to plenty of winners and from this yard he could be good to go on debut.

Dark Swansong 6/4

Newbury 1.45

Roger Charlton has won the last 3 renewals of this race but doesn’t have a runner this year and in fact only 4 horses head to post. I think SILK ROMANCE is the one to beat for Appleby and Buick. This Shamardal filly made a promising start eventually running on for second. She ran green for much of the race so that was a big run to get as close as she did. That experience wasn’t lost on her and she won readily at Newmarket last time. This is tougher but she is bred to be useful and might have too much class for these.

Fast Attack made a bright start winning on debut at Kempton and was pitched straight into a Group 2 in France last time. She failed to fire on that occasion but this is obviously easier so she is the danger. Star From Afarhh and Heredia both have potential so shouldn’t be entirely ruled out but could be bumping into a good one.

Newbury 1.45

Silk Romance 8/11

Newbury 2.20

This doesn’t look the best renewal of this race now Jazz Club isn’t running but the one I think has the biggest scope for improvement is NUANCE who makes his handicap debut after a cosy win at Chester at the start of last month. He has an opening mark of 87 which looks fair and I wouldn’t be surprised if he is pushing marks of 100 soon enough. He will likely improve again which should be good enough to make it back-to-back wins here.

Looking at the trends Richard Hannon must target the meeting as he does well in plenty of these races, this one in-particular taking 4 of the last 6 renewals and I wouldn’t rule out Secret Strength at a bigger price as he has been highly tried and if improving at this trip could trouble the selection. Of the rest Croupier was impressive last time but carries 10lb more now so that will be tough against the two mentioned.

Newbury 2.55

Some nice types lining up here and I’m keen to side with last year’s winning connections Charlie Appleby and William Buick for Godolphin. They saddle NOTEBOOK and this Lope De Vega colt looks potentially exciting. He cost 900,000 guineas and made a bright start winning on debut at Sandown last month. It was a professional performance and he won going away at the line from Paradias who reopposes here. He should relish stepping up to a mile for the first time and looks one to keep firmly on side today and going forward.

Westover is bred to be smart and also made a winning debut at Sandown last month. He showed a good turn of foot to leave them standing and looks to be the main danger to the favourite. Nathaniel colt Zechariah has got the hang of things now and looks best of the rest with more to come stepping up to a mile now.

Newbury 3.30

One of the biggest fields I have seen line-up for this race and it has made it very competitive indeed. Plenty of these are better than Listed level and with some capable of competing in some of the top races. ALBASHEER is a key example if you look at her 2 year old form. She was 4 lengths behind St Mark’s Basilica in the Dewhurst and he is now one of the best horses in training. She just missed out on her comeback run last month and back to 7 furlongs I think she will be so much better than she was that day. She has so much scope for improvement as well I think she is a great price (7/1 at the time of writing).

Godolphin have the majority of the dangers in Al Suhail, Silent Escape and D’bai and I think they all have live chances despite Buick being on Al Suhail. I actually think D’bai may surprise people and come out on top of that trio.

Newbury 4.05

Quite a tough race to call but the recent form of MAKRAM 2212 can’t be ignored. His win at Sandown on penultimate start has been franked since with the second Rhythmic Intent bolting up at Doncaster last week. He has only had one crack over this trip and that was last time at Newmarket where he was denied just a neck by Volcanic Sky. The pair came 11 lengths clear from the third Zabeel Champion so it looked a solid run. If they go a good clip that will help and I think he has leading claims.

Hard to pinpoint an exact danger given how open it looks but Labeebb has been running well and was a good third at Ascot last time. He isn’t screaming out that he is ahead of his mark but but remains fairly unexposed so there could be more to come. Calling The Wind is also quite interesting and deserves a second look.

Newbury 4.05

Makram 4/1

Newbury 4.35

Another race where the Jockey Championship contenders have it between them with Murphy taking on Buick. NEENEE’S CHOICE does have to give his rival plenty of weight but he is improving with every run. He stepped up to this trip with a win at Salisbury 2 weeks go and has only been put up 4lb. That was his third win in-a-row and he will helpfully make it 4 here. He really impressed with how much he found off the bridle and a similar scenario could play out here.

Dartington is in great form not out the places this season but does struggle to get his head in-front so may not have the scope of his rival. Of the rest End Result looks a good price at 9/1 to chase those two home back down to her favoured 10 furlongs. She finished lame last time so if all is well she should outrun her odds.
