This might not be the strongest of renewals but I’ve had my eye on NOTEBOOK for a while and his odds have been tumbling. He was as big as 14/1 to back for this just a couple of weeks ago and it has always seemed to be the target. He is a really promising colt by Dubawi and he made a bright start winning over a mile on the July Course here on debut. He looked professional but at the same time looked as if he’d improve for the run. He beat subsequent winner Saga and I was impressed by the way that colt followed up at Ascot. The sixth Inverness also won his next start (beating our earlier Notebook Educator) so the form has been franked wherever you look. The feeling is he is quite an exciting prospect so hopefully he can take the step up in grade in his stride and make it a perfect 2-2.
Masekela showed a good attitude under pressure to win last time but Royal Patronage might be a greater danger after impressing at York. Howth is a big price and could sneak a place based on his Group 2 form last time but has the least scope of these.
2.05 Haydock
Not the most competitive handicap on a busy Saturday afternoon and the top two look to have it between them. Nugget is horse who has done us well so far but he has to give plenty of weight away to NOBLE DYNASTY. Charlie Appleby’s colt only won but a short head last time but he looked as though he is still learning plenty and he should come on for the run. He is better off at the weights than on handicap debut due to Adam Farragher’s 5lb claim and is the one to beat.
You can see why Nugget is rated 101 and he is the class act in here. I have no doubt he will give the selection something to think about but the weight may tell at the business end. Of the rest I wouldn’t be surprised if Young Fire bounced back here at a big price.
2.25 Newmarket
This looks a deep renewal but even so I can’t wait to see SACRED BRIDGE out again. She has won all 4 starts to date and was mightily impressive last time. She has been learning on the job but still winning and came readily clear last time. There is almost certainly more to come and she deserves a crack at the top level now. She’ll have a few challengers so will likely have to work to win this but I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far and I’ll be hoping she remains unbeaten.
Sandrine lost her unbeaten record to Zain Claudette in the Lowther last time but is 3lb better off now. She is a danger but I actually fancy Zain Claudette to uphold that form and chase Sacred Bridge home. Flotus looks to be best of the rest.
Haydock 2.40
This is a tough race to call but I think PREMIER POWER might be worth chancing for Roger Varian. He looked a horse going places as a 3yo and while that hasn’t quite materialised I still think he has potential. He was only actually beaten 3 lengths in the Portland at Donny last time and the handicapper has dropped him a further 3lb which gives him a chance here. I’m guessing he’ll be ridden prominently and he should get first crack at the pacesetters which might turn out favourably.
Jawwaal is probably the form pick as he looks off a handy mark off the back of his latest fourth to Mondammej at Haydock. I fancy him to reverse that form now on these terms. Copper Knight also ties in with the latter and has to be respected given the season he has had. Be Proud was a good second last time and will no doubt have his supporters again.
Newmarket 3.00
Form lines galore in this race with the majority of the field meeting plenty already this season notably in the Prix Morny, Keeneland Stakes and the Railway Stakes. The Prix Morny form looks amongst the best and PERFECT POWER won that going away. I feel he would have been 4 from his last 4 if not finding trouble in running at Goodwood – a track notorious for it. He is a worthy favourite for this and I would be surprised if he is beaten.
It would take plenty of improvement to beat him based on that performance with his rival Asymmetric likely to be the one to chase him home in second as he is never far away. Dr Zempf is a horse I really like and is capable of running yet another big race but may need slightly more than his Keeneland Stakes run to win this but should place.
Newmarket 3.40
Uncle Bryn was all the rage for this but with Frankie Dettori seemingly electing to ride Magical Morning he has been weak in the betting over the last couple of days. The latter is actually vying for favouritism now which bet365’s Pat Cooney said could happen speaking on RacingTV on Thursday. They both have to be respected but I like the chances of ANMAAT at a bigger price. This 3yo is firmly on the upgrade and he impressed at Bath and then followed up in a better race at Doncaster, for which he was well backed too. He has more to come and while this is obviously tougher again I think he’s one I want to keep on side especially at a double-figure price.
Uncle Bryn and Magical Morning are 2 of the main dangers but Chichester did it well last time and looks ahead of the handicapper so should run a big race under Hollie Doyle. Wide open so Astro King and at a monster price Bell Rock complete the shortlist.
