Newcastle 4.55
Wide open handicap to kick off the evening card at Newcastle and I am going to take a chance on AYR EMPRESS at a double-figure price. She went close when last seen at Ayr off the same mark and 10 furlongs on this surface should be just what she needs. She has improved on her last two runs and if doing so again she will outrun her odds.
Masque Of Anarchy is favourite at the time of writing and he should go well if in the same form with all of his last 4 appearances good enough to make the frame here. Aradena has been nibbled at and is less exposed than most so another one to watch.
Newcastle 5.30
Persist is favourite at the time of writing but I’ll be surprised if CHICHEN ITZA doesn’t attract support. For me she is by far and away the most likely winner of this. She was a big eye-catcher on debut running on for fourth and that looked a pretty strong race. She was clueless early slowly into stride and waited with in rear but you could see the penny dropping late and she will improve for that. This is a good opportunity for her to open her account.
Persist is probably the danger off the back of that latest third but she was behind Aunt Bethany so will need to reverse that form. Hooked On You is a half-sister to Alcohol Free so is definitely the most interesting debutant – worth noting any market support.
Newcastle 6.00
This isn’t the most inspiring maiden with Amazon Prince looking to have the best form in the book but struggling to get his head in front. Based on her debut run I think EMILY POST could improve a fair bit from that and go close here. She was slowly away and met trouble in-running and still finished 3 lengths behind the winner. With the experience from that and natural improvement she is entitled to be thereabouts.
Of the rest Churchill College could be a danger for Marco Botti and Ben Curtis. This son of Churchill has first-time headgear so they have clearly done plenty of work with the horse and he could easily be good enough on debut.
Newcastle 6.30
Raven’s Pass colt Euraquilo has been strong in the betting for this so he is entitled to plenty of respect but he is quite short after just two starts and I think OUTSMART represents better value. This son of Outstrip was beaten just over a length on debut to a nice yardstick in Manhattanville. He then went close switched to turf at Thirsk last time up to a mile and that form has substance. If he gets away on terms back on this track and trip I think he has plenty going for him and he should go close.
Favourite Euraquilo does look the danger but Libby is also worth a mention. She is by Highland Reel and ran a cracker at huge odds when second at Beverley last time. If she improves again she will have her say as well. The Gurkha colt Dubai Immo is the most intriguing of the newcomers.
Newcastle 7.00
Not the strongest race and I fancy VALUE TIP to add another win to her fantastic run of form. She failed in a bid to land the 4-timer at Ayr on fast ground last time but back at this level on the all-weather she has a great chance to make it 4 wins from her last 5. She was raised 5lb for her last win which was over course and distance but she won that with a bit in hand and a mark of 65 should be no issue.
Another Angel looks the danger after running really well over 6 furlongs after a wind operation. Back down to 5 furlongs off this mark looks well within his grasp and he could give the selection something to think about but he hasn’t won for over a year now. Aleef has been knocking on the door and also has to enter the mix in a race like this.
Newcastle 7.30
There was a lot to like about the way NOTEBOOK won over 7f here last week and if he turns up in the same form turned out quickly under a penalty he is going to take a lot of stopping late. He made rapid headway going best and once in the lead just kept galloping out readily to the line. He certainly wasn’t stopping so the step back up to a mile can help. Some of his old form has substance so now he is back relishing the job I think he’ll be a tough nut to crack despite a fairly big weight.
Fennaan has won over this C&D and was a creditable fourth last time, nearest finish. He’ll need to build on that but he could be dangerous if doing so. Abnaa was close-up in third behind Cuban Cigar at Wolverhampton last month and might be a bit of value to hit the frame if building on that in a race that clearly lacks any real strength in depth. Lexington Warfare will need them to go hard to bring him into it late.
Newcastle 8.00
On current form this looks a weak race with only a few looking to have a decent chance and the selection COOL DANDY will take some beating. She romped home over course and distance on Friday and is turned out quickly off 6lb higher. The claimer takes off 3lb of that as well so this looks more than winnable if in the same form.
Mrs Dibble would have been a big danger but is now out so perhaps Crocodile Power will give her most to think about. He is by Slade Power and wasn’t disgraced last time so should run into a place at least.
Newcastle 8.30
Nightmare race! I didn’t really like anything near the top of the market so I’ve taken a chance on OAKENSHIELD at a price. He won over C&D as a 3yo when trained by Kevin Ryan and found himself back in the winners enclosure for this yard at Yarmouth back in July. He has had a couple of tough asks since and failed to shine but back at this track back down to a mark of 55 I think he can make his presence felt again. He doesn’t have the best draw but if he can track the speed through he should be well placed to strike on in the closing stages.
Royal Guard clocked a career best at Wolverhampton last time but isn’t the most straightforward so is no given to back that up. Obviously the one to beat if doing so. Oriental Lilly loves it here being a five-time course winner and it wouldn’t surprise me if she ran huge with the cheekpieces back on down in trip.
