1.45 Newmarket
A fiercely competitive Fillies’ Handicap to kick off ITV Racing on Saturday! It won’t surprise you that I’m taking two against the field with ENSEMBLE my first play. This filly has a touch of class about her and showed that when winning easily at Lingfield in August. She narrowly failed to back that up over the same C&D next time but bumped into Mrs Fitzherbert who looks a nice prospect and has won since with the pair clear. She goes up in trip now and I can see her running a big race here. She’ll be prominent so should get first run on a few of these which could make the difference.
I also like MS GANDHI for Roger Varian. I know they have always thought a fair bit of this filly and she confirmed those thoughts to some extent winning easily at Ripon in August. She ran on strongly and it was a convincing performance. Things didn’t pan out all that favourably up to a mile and a half at Doncaster last time but she ran creditably and back down to this trip I think she can resume her progression. At a double-figure price she definitely looks worth including. Swoon and State Occasion head the dangers in a good race.
2.05 Ascot
The last two renewals of this have been won by Dakota Gold who takes his place here again. He just hasn’t been the same horse this season over 5 furlongs and may need the extra furlong now at the age of 7. I backed TIS MARVELLOUS at Newbury in the Group 3 last time and he lost out by a length to Hurricane Ivor. He is a few pounds better off with him now and thrives over course and distance. He will be right there again and I fancy him to make it 3 wins in 4 runs. I’m quite surprised 11/2 is on offer this morning as I thought he’d be pushing Hurricane Ivor for favouritism so looks good value.
Hurricane Ivor may be worse off at the weights on Saturday but he still rates the main danger in his bid for a hat-trick. Minzaal is the interesting one in the field as he could be good enough to win this but this is his first run for over a year so I had to pass over. I know Jim Crowley expressed some concerns in his Coral blog that he might just get taken off his feet over the minimum on return from a fairly long layoff but certainly has the ability to figure.
2.20 Newmarket
Fearby has been all the rage for this and a case can be made given he will find this much easier than the Group company he has been facing lately. Even so he is short enough for me and I’m going to try and find one at a bigger price. My main play in the race has to be the unbeaten TATSUMAKI for Marco Botti. This Charming Thought colt won despite inexperience on debut on the July Course here and backed that up with an impressive display at Newcastle last month. This is tougher again but he brings untapped potential to the table and looks set to run a big race!
The likeable ERNIE’S VALENTINE also looks on the upgrade and is big in the betting at 12/1 so I’ve had an each way saver on him too. He is also chasing a hat-trick and beat a good yardstick in Manhattanville at Chelmsford last time. He won on turf on debut so I see no reason why he won’t transfer that form back here. With more to come he can get in the shake-up and if he gets the luck you never know he could even win this. Fearby is the one to beat but Adaay In Asia might also be a bit overpriced as she has been in cracking form lately.
Ascot 2.40
This looks a very good renewal of the Cumberland Lodge Stakes with plenty looking to have a good chance but NOTEBOOK is the one to beat in my opinion. He has already won two Group 3’s this season and only just lost out by a neck last time at Kempton where he apparently had a breathing issue. He can make it 3 wins in 4 here if in the same vein of form before that race. He is such a strong travelling sort and handles cut in the ground so I really don’t see why he has drifted in the market. I’m very hopeful of a big performance if all is well after that last run. Hamish could be smart himself so it’s form that might look very good in time to come.
Title comes out best at the wights with the 3 year old allowance and he has the form to compete with the selection and for me he is the main danger. Quickthorn is in top form and should make up the top 3 in this. He impressed with the way he managed to overcome that slow start last time and should get away on terms here. Ilaraab was back in some sort of form when third at Newbury and if building on that again could figure at some point here as well.
Newmarket 2.55
This looks a strong renewal of the Sun Chariot but hopefully NOTEBOOK can emulate her mother who came from last to first to win this back in 2013. This filly looked to be going places winning the Falmouth impressively on the July course here earlier in the season and while she has been beaten twice since she wasn’t seen to best effect on either occasion. She was denied a run in the Sussex Stakes before keeping on for third. That is strong form with Guineas winner Poetic Flare in second. She then went over to France where she bumped into Baaeed. That race just didn’t pan out favourably and she got caught up on the inside as they quickened. She is a lot better than that and this track should see her back to her best.
Mother Earth reopposes again and has won a Group 1 since so could be dangerous. Saffron Beach and Lavender’s Blue both come here in winning form and are also respected. The former is the one for money this morning with conditions perhaps going to suit her with plenty of rain forecast.
Ascot 3.15
This Bengough Stakes looks very competitive this year which is why DILIGENT HARRY is a double-figure price at the time of writing which I am more than happy with. Clive Cox’s colt is improving with every run and has gone close in his last two Group 3’s which both look like top form. He has been keen in his runs so Glen Shiel being drawn next to him should give him a good run into the race and I think he will outrun his odds. If he gets that target to run down I do think he has a big engine so can’t see how he won’t run a big race in an open contest.
On current form Great Ambassador has to be the main danger and I fully expect him to reverse the form with Bielsa. Glen Shiel has been out of form on his last two runs and will need to bounce back but he did win over course and distance this time last year so you never know. Punchbowl Flyer has been nibbled at as well and might be worth a second look if conditions do deteriorate.
Redcar 3.35
After winning 3 of his first 4 starts VALUE TIP has been highly tried since racing in Group company at Goodwood, York and Doncaster recently. He finished down the field last time but was only actually beaten 4 lengths by Caturra having never managed to land a blow. As competitive as this looks it is definitely easier and the step up to 6f may well unlock further improvement. The key to him will be getting a nice toe in as if he can wait for as long as possible to produce him and he has a target to run down I’m confident he can win this. He still has plenty of potential and he looks better value than Vintage Clarets who is fav at the time of writing.
The latter is a good horse and I think a high draw cost him any chance at Ayr last time. If he puts his best hoof forward he’ll be the danger. Anadora is better than what she showed at Musselburgh last time and could also get involved at a bigger price if bouncing back. Mojomaker would have been well tuned for this and might also be capable of a big run for connections.
Ascot 3.50
This is an interesting race as it is wide open and there isn’t much pace on with the majority of the field favouring positions nearer the rear. Knowing that I am going to take them on with two that I think will go forward and could get it a tad easy on the front. TOMFRE is back in handicap company after falling short at Listed level. He has been dropped 2lb for that run and considering he was running well off 105 the handicapper has given him a chance. If breaking well Kingscote will hopefully ride him aggressively on the front end and he should go well.
OO DE LALLY is the other one I like after he made it 2 wins in 3 races over 7 furlongs last time. He only gets a 2lb penalty for that and he could be even better back on the speed. There are plenty of dangers in here but I am happy with my two at big prices especially the latter who has drifted out to 25/1 now. River Nymph is 2-2 over C&D and really impressed in the Victoria Cup. He was a good fourth at Newbury last month on return and looks the main danger in the lucky last.
