Tricky race to kick off Friday’s evening card at Newcastle and I’ve taken the decision to back two against the field here. I did initially like Innse Gall in here but now that horse is out my main play would have to be Noble Mission colt NOBLE CRUSADE for Keith Dalgleish. This 3yo ran an eye-catching race closing up late at Ayr last time. The winner My Little Queens was back to her best there and she has won 3 of her last 5 so looks progressive. The selection just needed a stronger gallop on that occasion and this might pan out more favourably for him.
Given the shape of the race I’ve also had a saver on STARFIGHTER for Mark Loughnane. This son of Sea The Stars is better than what he’s shown lately down the field at Haydock last time. The handicapper has eased him 3lb as a result and back on the AW I think we’re going to see an improved run. Dangers include Tilsitt back in easier company and at a bigger price Italian Breeze who could go well if taking to this surface.
Newcastle 5.30
Another tough race which is very much the theme of the night. I’m going to give ZENZERO a chance to follow up that C&D win a fortnight ago. He is by Twilight Son so is certainly bred to be pretty useful but it did take a while for him to get his head in front. A combination of a reduced mark and a change of headgear seemed to be the catalyst and he might kick on now. He is only up 3lb and while this is competitive I think he has to be considered as one of the more likely winners. He should just tuck in off the speed and if he gets a nice route through he might pick up best.
Vintage Polly has been the one for money and she did shape much better when third over C&D a couple of weeks ago. That didn’t look a bad race for the grade and she should be up to taking advantage of this mark sooner rather than later. She can get quite far back though so will be hoping for a place collapse. Clotherholme finally got his head in front at Musselburgh last time and showed a good attitude on that occasion so also has to be feared. Starbo best of the rest as ran well in a good race last time.
Newcastle 6.00
This looks like an average novice event at best with the only shining light on what we have seen so far being PERIPETEIA. Based on her 18/1 starting price she wasn’t expected to go as well as she did on debut. She made good headway to finish second with the time of race reading well. She should step forward substantially for the run and she will take some beating. The fourth Under The Twilight lowered the colours of long odds-on fav Lord Lovelace at Chelmsford last night so the form has been strongly franked since. She is going to improve but might not even need to given how weak this looks.
Biplane has shown glimpses of form and could be dangerous if stepping forward on what she has shown so far. Great Ridley is the only one we haven’t seen so could be interesting if popular in the market in a weak race but at the time of writing she is out to 33/1 in the betting so looks likely to come on for the experience. Burj Malinka didn’t pull down any trees in Ireland and is hard to warm to despite her fairly prominent position in the market.
Newcastle 6.30
I’m quite surprised BETWEEN THE SHEETS is as big as 10/1 in the betting at the time of writing. I know she was disappointing when down the field at Wolverhampton last time but if you put a line through that she had been shaping promisingly and after just 6 starts she is still learning her trade. Down to a mark of 65 now this nursery should be within reach and I think we’re going to see her go close. There is a fair bit of pace on and hopefully she can get a nice toe in before launching a challenge in the closing stages.
Delahoussaye is fav at the time of writing and while he ran well when second at Chelmsford last time he looks a bit short in the market off the back of that and is going to need to step forward again to justify favouritism. Muveran could improve now going handicapping and is also worth a second look in the betting closer to the off as that should give us a better clue as to his chances here.
Newcastle 7.00
When you see the odds of the favourite at 6/1 in a 14-runner field you know it is going to be a tough race to call. With it being so competitive CHARLEMAINE is worth a bet at a nice each way price. He was slow away last week over course and distance when finishing third. This week he gets to make use of Rhona Pindar’s 7lb claim which should make a big difference and can see him go even better this time. He is 50/1 and the rank outsider of the field so definitely worth chancing in such an open race.
Plenty are dropping down the handicap but Peachey Carnehan could prove the main danger as he has been running well without winning and has shown some of his better performances on this surface including a course and distance win. Dylan’s Lad is being backed due to the Hugh Taylor effect but he needs to show more and has been overbet for me. Hurstwood has at least won over track and trip and has the cheekpieces back on here.
Newcastle 7.30
One For The Ladies won well over C&D last time and may well be up to going in again up 7lb but it’s another case of the fav probably being a bit overbet here so I’m going to chance two at bigger prices against the field in the hope of an upset. OAKENSHIELD has also won over this C&D and he was back in the winners enclosure at Yarmouth in July. He has been beaten 3 times since and was 4 and a quarter lengths behind the fav last time but is better off at the weights here and was hampered at the start last time. If he gets away better and gets a good position I think he can run better than his odds are suggesting.
It’s probably more from a pace perspective but CUPPACOCO is also worth including. This mare chased home Glorious Rio on penultimate start before doing too much in the race One For The Ladies won last time. If she gets the fractions right she might take a bit of pegging back. Dangers obviously include the fav but Khulu is quite interesting too. He remains unexposed and wasn’t beaten far last time so could step forward.
Newcastle 8.00
This race could be one of the best on the card with the top 5 in the market looking to be in hot form with MAKEEN taking my vote. He has lost out by very small margins on his last two runs over course and distance and this race actually looks a tad easier than his last one even with the form horses. He gets to run off of 3lb lighter with Harry Russell taking the mount and I think he will get his head back in front on Friday night.
Plenty of these could be dangers to the selection with Bringitonboris looking like top of the list after going very close like the selection last time and actually finishing in front of him two runs back. He gets the first-time visor which could bring out more but I favour the selection. Twisted Dreams is better than what he showed last time so also enters calculations.
Newcastle 8.30
Hopefully we can hit a winner in the lucky last at Newcastle on Friday night. Our Longshot runs in this race in the shape of JEMS BOND. He failed to fire last time but was going well enough off the pace and was denied a run when trying to make headway a couple of furlongs out. He was never dangerous thereafter and if he gets the rub of the green tonight he may well show he is well handicapped. His second to Tyche 3 starts back where he was beaten just half a length was a big run and a similar performance here would have him involved at a decent price.
Cool Dandy was back in the winners enclosure on penultimate start but didn’t really back that up last time. If she bounces back here she could be seriously involved so needs respecting. Must Be An Angel remains a maiden but has clocked some respectable times in defeat so I don’t think he’ll be all that far away again. Millionaire Waltz also has a squeak on his old form.
