Newbury 12.20
This is a wide open handicap with some decent sorts in here. OSPREY CALL gets the vote after running well on both of his last two hurdle starts. He won at Doncaster before finishing a good second behind Lord Baddesley. Stepping into handicaps he does carry top-weight but I think can be better than his current mark and goes well fresh so looks worth chancing.
There are plenty of dangers with the main one being Siroco Jo who recored a nice win over course and distance before stepping into a good handicap at Aintree. If running to the level of his last run at the track he will go well.
Newbury 12.55
Nicky Henderson has won 2 of the last 4 renewals of this including last year with Dusart and BROOMFIELD BURG looks equally as promising. This former Irish point to point winner failed to handle testing conditions when a well backed fav on bumper debut here back in January but has thrived since. He won emphatically at Southwell and then improved again on hurdles debut to win at Warwick. He could be anything and gets a confident vote to take this out on his seasonal reappearance.
Silent Revolution himself looks a nice prospect too and has had a wind op since finishing third in a bumper here. He will improve now jumping obstacles and might be one to follow for the season ahead but is probably just bumping into one here.
Newbury 1.30
Just the 3 go to post for this Beginners’ Chase with IMPERIAL ALCAZAR looking like the one to beat on his best form. If he can run to the level of his win at Warwick in January over fences for the first time he will win this. He was a bit out of his depth in Grade 3s but this is more than winnable and it’s no surprise to see him figuring prominently in the betting at the time of writing.
The main danger would be Silver Forever if anywhere near her old form but she hasn’t been seen for 670 days so it is a lot to ask. The Cob would need to improve a fair bit over these new obstacles to get competitive.
Newbury 2.00
The NAP won again yesterday as Brave Kingdom made a winning hurdles debut. Another horse that looked potentially exciting in bumpers last year was ELLE EST BELLE for Dan Skelton. She mixed it with some very talented horses and ran a cracker when third in the Champion Bumper. If she transfers that form over hurdles now she will take a lot of beating here. Connections will be eyeing up some big prizes for her so it will be disappointing if she can’t make a winning start.
Ahorsewithnoname was an encouraging second on hurdles debut over C&D last year but failed to back that up next time so has enough to prove on return. Still early days though so should chase the selection home.
Newbury 2.30
Pertemps qualifiers are always competitive and this is no different with SPIRITOFTHEGAMES getting a narrow vote. He finished last season in great form over fences and even put in a decent hurdle run off this mark. He has gone well fresh previously and should be in the mix at the finish. Even with some of the bad luck the Skelton’s have been having lately they are still operating at a 20% strike rate so have their horses in great form.
One For You is the main danger after improving on his last few runs and he looks to have more to come. He will be in the mix if ready to roll after a 225-day break as will Didtheyleaveuoutto who has fitness on side but has to prove himself over this trip. He certainly has the potential based on his last run.
Newbury 3.05
This is competitive but I’m looking forward to VALUE TIP jumping a fence and this Irish point winner could go off a fair bit shorter than the 4/1 on offer at the time of writing. He made a bright start for Alan King finishing third behind Boothill and Bothwell Bridge in a bumper at Kempton. Given time after that he made a winning return on debut over hurdles at Wetherby, quickening away from rivals to win impressively by 6 and a half lengths.
He then bumped into 3 smart horses. The first of those was Threeunderthrufive at Ludlow and that horse has since go on to flourish over fences. Star Gate had too many gears at Sandown in a Grade 2 and then Gladiateur Allen had his measure at Ascot. He acquitted himself well in defeat though and signed off last campaign with a win at Fontwell. He should come into his own now jumping a fence and connections will be hopeful of a big season ahead.
Newbury 3.40
As always with these National Hunt Flat races you don’t have loads to go on and are always susceptible to an improver. AMERICAN GERRY has the form in the book after two seconds in this sphere and if fully fit will take all the beating for Hughie Morrison with 7lb claimer Nathan Brennan booked for the ride.
The man danger could be Surtitle who has fitness on his side and if improving from that run he will be right in the mix. Clean Getaway has been backed for Nicky Henderson and should also be sharper now after finishing fifth at Southwell.
