Haydock 1.50
I was really impressed with the way BRAVEMANSGAME won on chase debut and while this is no easy task I’m finding him hard to oppose. He jumped so slick and is only going to improve from that run. He is clearly a high-class animal and the yard hold him in high regard. I remember last season over hurdles that they always thought he would make a better chaser and that’s certainly coming to fruition now.
Itchy Feet is a very talented beast on his day and he ran well when second to Allmankind on return last month. He was only beaten a length and given he should tighten up from the run I expect him to give the fav some sort of a race. Pay The Piper just missed out to Fiddlerontheroof at Carlisle but certainly shouldn’t be underestimated either.
Ascot 2.05
This a cracking renewal with plenty of Grade 1 winners in here but most of them have a bit to prove. I am going to give MASTER TOMMYTUCKER a narrow vote as he won this time last year once and even beat the favourite for this Dashel Drasher. He had a fitness edge over him last year and does again this year after a prep run at Wetherby over 3 miles. Back down to this trip should suit and he will run a big race.
Dashel Drasher is the main danger but needed the run last year before going onto much bigger and better things including reversing the form with the selection. Then we have former top class chasers Lostintranslation and Defi Du Seuil who if bouncing back to their old form would win this but they do have it to prove after a few poor showings.
Haydock 2.25
It turned into a real gruelling test at Carlisle last time but BASS ROCK was up to the task staying on strongly to win bravely. I was really impressed with that and with the step back up to 3 miles sure to suit he looks a great bet to follow up despite a 7lb rise. He is very much unexposed looking at his profile and I’d go as far to say that he is the best each way bet of the day at 8/1 at the time of writing. That form has already been franked with the second Teescomponents Lad beating the improving Jesuitique at Market Rasen earlier in the week.
Riggs represents Dan Skelton who brought up 1,000 winners yesterday. He got caught too far back at Aintree on return and is expected to step forward from that now. Rightplacerighttime won at Fairyhouse last time and could go well back hurdling but is short enough. Orbys Legend is also a lively danger in a competitive race.
Ascot 2.40
The usual small field for this race with just 5 going to post on Saturday and BUZZ gets the vote after landing the Cesarewtich at Newmarket when we backed him last month. That was a great prep run for this and on his hurdles form behind Abacadabras at Aintree he is the one to beat. He will be one to follow all season over different trips.
Song For Someone is the main danger as he won this last year first time out and has had a wind op after pulling up in the race that the selection ran in at Aintree. If in the same form as last year he will go close but has to prove himself again. Talking of prove himself Goshen has been a shadow of himself since the fall at Cheltenham and would need to bounce back to his best to win.
Haydock 3.00
As much as I love Bristol De Mai and I really hope he runs well I have to be concerned given the ground. I think the obvious play is the classy A PLUS TARD and if he is in the same form that saw him victorious in Grade 1 company in Ireland and second in a Gold Cup then quite clearly he is the one they all have to beat. I get his price as he does usually improve for a run but I think he might be too good anyway here.
Nicholls has been keen to shout about the chances of Next Destination and he ran a cracker when second to Galvin at Cheltenham but if the fav runs his race then he will be playing for a place at best. Waiting Patiently is exactly what his followers would have been doing for all these years.
Ascot 3.15
This is usually a very good race with First Flow winning it last year. It’s packed with good horses but whether they will go on to do what he did last season remains to be seen. I liked SKY PIRATE on his seasonal reappearance when beaten by today’s favourite Before Midnight and he now gets an 8lb swing at the weights with that rival. He may have needed the run more than we thought and if near 100% here he will go close based on his previous form.
Before Midnight is still the main danger as he could still be improving but 8lb requires a big step forward. Amoola Gold went so close to winning this last year but now runs off 12lb higher. He is in good form after a Listed win over course and distance last month and will likely run a big race again.
Haydock 3.35
The hat-trick seeking NOTEBOOK looks worth chancing in the lucky last at Haydock on Saturday. He left his reappearance run behind at Chepstow to win well at Cheltenham last month despite idling in front and backed that up impressively at the same venue last time staying on really well close home. The handicapper has reacted again raising him a further 7lb but he was value for more last time and has potential to do better again. For me he looks the only real improver in the field so it will be disappointing if he doesn’t go close.
Empire Steel had excuses at Aintree and has looked quite progressive before that so might be worth another chance but is entitled to come on for the run. Ramses De Teillee should come on for his return but will certainly need to if he is to fend off this fav who will hopefully be finishing best of all in the closing stages.
