Southwell 12.20
There was lots to like about the chase debut of ALL SHOOK UP at Hereford at the start of the month. He found all bar a well handicapped rival (who is today’s NAP at Sedgefield) too good and the front 3 were readily clear from the rest that day. He should come on from that experience and going back up in trip is only going to help so I think he’ll be hard to beat here.
Joly Maker is second fav but I’m not convinced by his profile. He was only denied a head on return but could never land a blow last time and he just looks to lack a change of gear. This faster ground could see him taken off his feet so I think Mozzaro might actually be the danger. Needs to improve now chasing but good chance he might.
Southwell 12.50
Only the 5 runners taking their place in this race but it’s certainly intriguing with BROTHER PAT and Ebony Gale taking each other on after easy wins last time out. The former has won back-to-back races without being tested and the 10lb rise won’t bother him based on those performances and I think he adds another win to his streak. He will likely push forward again and should take a lot of catching under handy 5lb claimer Theo Gillard.
Ebony Gale will be dangerous off the same mark he won off at Taunton but may not have the scope of the selection. Accordingtogino would have a chance on his previous form but he’s been really poor in his last few runs and has enough to prove on the balance of his form.
Southwell 1.25
Fergal O’Brien had an across the card four-timer yesterday so I have no doubt Walk In The Park gelding Feast will prove popular here but given that horse has never been seen on a racecourse there might just be value in opposing and I think VALUE TIP has a great chance of bagging the prize. This horse was actually previously trained by Fergal and ran a cracker on debut going down just a nose in a bumper at Huntingdon this time last year. He has since changed hands and is now in the care of Neil Mulholland. He did all his best work late and will appreciate going up in trip. He is likely to have improved plenty and I think he can put that experience to good use now with this fast ground ideal.
Haas Boy showed glimpses of promise when fourth on debut at Worcester but he was well held in the end so will need to leave that behind to figure.
Southwell 1.55
As maidens go this doesn’t look the best with SURE TOUCH the favourite for this after a nice debut win back in January. He was then pitched into a Grade 2 at Aintree so they clearly rate him. It’s his hurdles debut and if living up to his potential will take all the beating in a poor race. The market is already speaking favourably about him and he could go off really short here.
The main danger would be Greatest Star who was a long way back in fourth on hurdles debut but may have needed that run after a wind-op and could improve a fair bit for it. Mahanakhon Power is yet to match his Flat form over hurdles so needs a step forward on what we’ve seen to even get competitive.
Southwell 2.25
Lelantos is fav here for Nicky Henderson and the yard do look to be turning a corner now with quite a few winners in the past fortnight. He hasn’t been seen for 4 months though and this does look quite competitive so I think he’s short enough. O’HANRAHAN BRIDGE looked good winning at Carlisle just under a year ago but has failed to match that since. I did think he shaped better at Aintree on return though and this is easier so if he rediscovers some form down another 5lb he could have a big say in the finish off a career-low mark.
Lemon T is a scopey sort who was back to winning ways over C&D in the first-time cheekpieces in May. He shaped well on return following wind surgery and if building on that again will get involved here. Cry Wolf and Railway Muice are also lively players in an open race.
Southwell 2.55
This isn’t a deep race with plenty not looking that well handicapped but WHAT A GLANCE has to be the one to beat after his run at Worcester last time. It was his first run for David Dennis and the change of yard seems to have worked wonders as he stepped forward massively winning by 16 lengths. He is up 8lb for that but could be a lot better than that mark if he continues to progress like he did last run.
Ten Past Midnight is the main danger going for his hat-trick. He is only up 5lb as he keeps winning by small margins and he could be good enough to carry that penalty to victory. Of the rest Bembridge could be better than when last seen now he is getting faster ground.
Southwell 3.25
Gavin ran out an impressive winner at Uttoxeter on his handicap debut 10 days ago and is likely to be fairly popular here but an 11lb rise looks a bit harsh to me and he is coming up against another thriving horse in NOTEBOOK. He dotted up off this mark over fences at Fakenham last time and back over hurdles off the same mark I think he’s going to take a lot of holding off. He will likely be ridden quietly again by Isable Williams before looking to pick them off.
Major Snugfit is the pace angle and did win well despite idling at Sedgefield last time. He is up 5lb but would be one of the lively dangers in here given he seemed to win with more than that in hand the last day. Phoebus Lescribaa can often travel quite well but doesn’t find much off the bridle so is likely to be found out in the closing stages in this company.
