Newbury 1.15

Wide open renewal of this race and it is worth having an each way play on KAUTO THE KING. He has form of 111-10-1 on his last 5 runs and bounced back from a rare blip nicely at Wincanton earlier this month. He kept on well which suggests just a 4lb penalty shouldn’t be stopping him considering he will be fitter for that run. He looked overpriced and I expect him to go well in a competitive race.

Kalooki is the danger if in the same form as when last seen at the track in March. He isn’t always the most consistent but on his best he could have some wiggle room off this mark. Killer Clown could be much better than his comeback run and is a danger on previous form. He has been the one for money.

Newcastle 1.30

I’m not overly convinced by Valleres or Cooper’s Cross so I think TUPELO MISSISSIPPI represents the value play here. I know trainer Brian Ellison thinks a fair bit of this horse and he certainly wasn’t disgraced back from a break when beaten in a match at Carlisle last month. He will strip a lot fitter from that and given it was his first run over fences he is likely to improve too. Given his size and scope I’ll be surprised if he isn’t better than a mark of 123 and I think he can serve it up to them here.

Winds Of Fire is the rank outsider of the 4 but even he retains potential as he did quite well over hurdles last season and he unseated at the first at Hereford and is definitely worth another chance. Of the two market principals Cooper’s Cross would be the one I’d fear most.

Newbury 1.50

Even with just the 11 runners this is ultra competitive with most of these in with a chance. I am going to put forward the 10 year old CH’TIBELLO for the Skeltons. Dan Skelton knows how to win this race as he won last years renewal and he has another good each way chance this year. Ch’tibello was rated 155 at the start of last season and ran well on both starts before his season was curtailed with injury. He is now off 147 and if anywhere near his former self he will be a big player.

There are dangers galore with the main one being Lecale’s Article who is the most unexposed in the field with just 3 hurdle runs so far. His PTP form suggests this longer trip will see him improve and he has to be taken seriously on seasonal debut. Of the rest Calva D’Ague and Masters Legacy are in form and have fitness of their side so you would think they would be in the mix as well.

Newcastle 2.05

Yorkhill sprung back to life to win this last year and I’m taking a chance AYE RIGHT can do the same. This horse has been a cracking staying chaser over the last year or so and while his form has veered off slightly he was dropped back in trip on return last month and that would have been used to blow the cobwebs away. Back over nearly 3 miles he will be much happier and back down to a mark of 151 which is a mark he finished an excellent second to Takingrisks at Doncaster back in January then he must have a big shout here.

I do think Takingrisks could be involved so at a huge each way price he might be worth chancing. Notachance also appeals on return given he is just a 7yo. He has been pulled up the last twice so has enough to prove but I can see him going well here given he is proven fresh. Of those at the head of the market I’d make The Ferry Master a clear fav over Dingo Dollar and Glen Forsa.

Newbury 2.25

Ridiculously small field for this £50,000 prize pool and it still manages to look like an intriguing race. SOARING GLORY is the class act in the field but gives weight to all of these. He won a Listed handicap at Ascot on his seasonal reappearance fairly easily and has been put up 6lb for that. He should be much fitter for the run and I think he is better than a 143 rated horse so I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t take care of these.

The only danger is if any of the other 3 are a lot better than their marks. Of the 3 Onemorefortheroad could be going for the hat-trick but he likes to force the pace and might end up setting it up for the selection. Gowel Road likes this track and trip and looks likely to emerge as a greater danger.

Newbury 3.00

I love this race! Ever since Denman won it back in 2007 I’ve always paid close attention and I have some great memories having backed some good horses to victory in this down the years. Cloth Cap was impressive last year and hopefully we see a new star emerge this season. I’ve liked ONTHEROPES for a while and to see him win as he did back from 11 months off the track at Limerick last month was very pleasing to the eye. He has been hit with a 12lb rise but connections would have been expecting that and I think he has a huge chance of giving Mullins another win in the race (won it with Total Recall back in 2017).

Given the nature of the race I think it’s worth having a saver and I still think COPPERHEAD is capable of a big run granted the right conditions. When he won at Ascot in February last year he looked a really exciting horse and I know he has completely gone off the boil since but he is down in the handicap as a result and they’ve clearly had this in mind for a while. I can see him relishing the switch back to chasing and off a good weight I can see him running a big race at a price. Eklat De Rire is likely to go off a well backed fav but at those odds I’d take him on all day. He won well at Wexford but this is a different ballgame. I think Enrilo and Fiddlerontheroof are much bigger dangers.

Newcastle 3.15

This looks a cracking renewal of the Fighting Fifth with EPATANTE back to retain her crown. She won here first time up last season and I would expect here to be ready to roll after a disappointing end to last season. She gets the mares allowance from all of her rivals which makes such a difference with top class horses at this level and looks the one to beat. Nicky Henderson sounds quietly confident and she should justify favouritism.

4 year olds don’t have the best record in the race but Monmiral could be special. At the time of writing the ground may be a bit quick for him but there is plenty of rain around in Newcastle. Hopefully he takes his chance as it will make for a fantastic race. Add Sceau Royal to the mix who looks in better form than ever after two easy wins to start the season. He was readily held in this last season though so has his work cutout to close that gap.

Newbury 3.35

Venetia Williams is really hitting form and while she does usually come good at this time of year it’s usually because conditions are deteriorating whereas that’s not the case this time around. Anyhow I like FRERO BANBOU here as he is a horse I’ve had my eye on for quite a while. He was well held in fourth on return at Ascot but that run certainly wasn’t without promise and if he builds on that he can definitely get seriously competitive here. He needs to show some enthusiasm but if he gets into a decent rhythm early then watch his odds collapse.

Grey Diamond has made a decent start over fences and probably deserves to be favourite. Il Ridoto pulled too hard at Newton Abbot and while he is one of the dark horses coming into this I’m not sold on his chance. Eclair D’Ainay wasn’t disgraced at Wetherby and if he builds on that he is one I expect to be bang there at the finish along with the selection. Good race to close out for a change anyway.
