Sandown 1.50

Very competitive race to kick off the ITV Racing coverage on Friday and CHAMPAGNE WELL gets a narrow vote. He won at Plumpton last month by a nose so has only been raised 1lb for that. That was over hurdles but he could have plenty of room to improve as he was rated 141 over fences last season and I expect him to go well. I’m surprised he is as big as 4/1 as I think he’ll go off a shorter price than that come post time.

Bothwell Bridge is very interesting with hurdles form behind plenty of the top novice hurdlers and could be much improved over fences. He has also had a wind op which could improve him further. He was passed over as the selection has a fitness-edge but he is one to watch this season.

Exeter 2.05

All eyes will be on the Harry Fry-trained BOOTHILL here as he bids to make a winning start over fences. His form stacks up over hurdles and if he can transfer that or even better it over the larger obstacles then he could have a very bright future indeed. He has always jumped his hurdles quite big so I think he’ll relish this test now. He still lacks experience but that could also be a good thing as it means we haven’t seen anywhere near his potential yet.

Adrimel was pulled up on his final two starts over hurdles but his form did read well before that and he should also take to chasing so looks the danger. Elixir De Nutz isn’t one to give up on yet and it wouldn’t surprise me if he bounced back here.

Sandown 2.25

Smaller field for this race again with just 5 going to post. It isn’t without quality though with BRAVE KINGDOM heading up the market. He is 2/2 under Rules and was so impressive on his hurdles debut at Chepstow last month, winning by just under 10 lengths. He is only going to improve from that initial experience and is hard to oppose this afternoon. He should win this before being targeted at bigger prizes in time.

Fair Frontieres went close in a Navan maiden hurdle and came on from that to make a winning start for this yard at Worcester. He also has potential but might just be bumping into one on the day. Lossiemouth has won both starts this season but this tougher again. I think the selection could be a level above and will win as long as they don’t go a silly pace early.

Exeter 2.40

With 8 runners heading to post TILE TAPPER looks a really good value play here. He is lightly raced on the whole and showed potential without winning over hurdles last season. He would have blown the cobwebs away on return at Chepstow where he never got competitive and switched to fences now it wouldn’t surprise me to see him take a big step forward. He is off a mark of 121 and I’ll be surprised if he can’t land a blow here and at his odds he is definitely worth chancing.

Gunsight Ridge also reached a decent level over hurdles and this former point winner made an encouraging start over fences when third at Aintree. With more to come now he is feared most. L’Homme Presse has been well backed in the betting and could also land a blow if taking to chasing.

Sandown 3.00

This looks a wide open handicap chase with ONE TRUE KING edging it for us. He has dropped down the weights and now back at 2 miles he looks ready to get his head in front. He lost out by 2 lengths as Ffos Las last month which should set him up for this. If at his best he will go very well off 126. I know this is competitive but he is 11/2 at the time of writing so that looks a cracking each way play.

Desque De L’Isle could be the main danger after winning on his seasonal reappearance. He only won by a small margin but was hit with a 10lb penalty as he won it easily. Ned Fox takes that 10lb back off so he has to be taken seriously here. Of the rest Demopolis could be overpriced if bouncing back after a wind op.

Exeter 3.15

This race threw up at 16/1 upset last year and it looks just as competitive again so it might not surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field. The main play would have to be POPPA POUTINE for Nigel and Sam Twiston-Davies. This 5yo won twice over hurdles last season and returned with a very good run on chase debut to finish fourth here last month. I expect him to be a lot sharper now and with more to come he could get seriously involved at a decent price.

At a bigger price AARON LAD might be capable of running well for Dr Richard Newland. He is a 10yo now but he has some very useful form to his name and if he is fit enough and ready to roll he could go close. He was last seen running a good race in third at Cartmel so if building on that would be competitive this afternoon. Dangers include the in-f0rm Young Offender and Storm Force Ben who was a good second and will appreciate going up in trip.

Sandown 3.35

These Pertemps qualifiers are always tough calls but STONER’S CHOICE looks a solid bet. He ran well in a similar event last month behind Calva D’auge losing out be just over a length at Kempton. He is dropped 1lb for that and I think he is more than capable of winning off 143. I think he’s at his best making all so hopefully Max Kendrick is on the ball and makes good use of him.

Pileon is the favourite at the time of writing and is the main danger if stepping forward for the run at Aintree. He was a close up fourth that day in a good race and is a threat to all. Storm Arising has a fair bit of class and is also feared on his seasonal reappearance sporting cheekpieces.
