Aintree 1.30

I thought NOTEBOOK ran out a very impressive winner at Galway on just her second start over hurdles. She wasn’t even all that fluent over her hurdles but still came away to win by 13 lengths. I can see her improving again from that and if she does she will be a danger to all in here. This isn’t a bad renewal with some potentially decent types lining up but she may well be the most promising of them. Gavin Cromwell has done well with horses he has sent over here and I expect her to go off a well backed favourite.

Six Feet Apart impressed winning on hurdles debut at Fairyhouse and she looks the danger for Joseph O’Brien. Addosh fell at Cheltenham last time but her win at Market Rasen reads well and if she bounces back with a clean round I don’t expect her to be far away either.

Sandown 1.50

This looks like a decent renewal even if this field aren’t quite Grade 1 horses yet there are a few that could easily be at the level regularly by the end of the season. THIRD TIME LUCKI was so impressive at Cheltenham last month with an exuberant round of jumping. That was a good race and if in the same form is the one to beat here. His trainer knows what it takes to win this as he won it last year and has a great chance of winning it again.

Edwardstone doesn’t have the form of the selection but his easy win at Warwick suggests he could have more to offer. He looks a big danger. Of the rest Minella Drama has a fair level of form and will be in the mix if he avoid mistakes.

Aintree 2.05

This is a cracking race but from a betting perspective it’s quite hard to call. I’m going to chance IMPERIAL AURA bouncing back for Kim Bailey. This horse danced his way to Grade 2 success at Ascot last season before his form went downhill. He unseated at just the second fence behind Master Tommytucker at Kempton and then never went a yard when pulled up in the Ryanair at the Festival. He made a bad mistake in the Betfair Chase and then came down. If none the worse he could be a big danger to all here.

Protektorat is probably the safest play on recent form but he is favourite as a result and I wouldn’t want to be taking a short price about anything in here. Simply The Betts shaped well behind the latter in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and if he strips fitter I can see him reversing that and being the main danger.

Sandown 2.25

It is a shame this race gets so many horses pull out every year but even with 5 runners this looks a quality renewal. It does look between CHACUN POUR SOI and Nube Negra. Chacun Pour Sou won easily on his first run of the season last season with a 19 length win at Cork so he goes well fresh. He followed that up with 3 Grade 1 wins and a third at Cheltenham. He is clear on ratings and if anywhere near full fitness will win this.

Nube Negra is the danger based on his win the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham which he won easily in a good field. He did finish in front of the selection at the Festival but the form was reversed heavily at Punchestown. He may have a fitness edge but has it to find with Chacun Pour Soi if both at their best.

Aintree 2.40

The Becher is always fiercely competitive and it’s no different this year. I’m going to chance two against the field and they’re both Irish trainer. CHRIS’S DREAM goes really well fresh and I thought he shaped well in the Grand National before unseating when last seen in April. Put away since this would have been the target and with Jonjo O’Neill Junior booked for Henry de Bromhead I think this 9yo can go close.

Given the shape of the race I’m also chancing TOUT EST PERMIS for Noel Meade. He had a mixed record last season and was pulled up in the Grand National on final start. He shaped with promise when fifth on return though and with the cobwebs blown away could get seriously competitive here. Dangers include the likeable Snow Leopardess who should jump for fun and Mighty Thunder who might want an even stiffer test but is tough and will be there fighting it out.

Sandown 3.00

This looks like a wide open race and an each way play in SALTY BOY looks the way to go. He won well at Fontwell last month and had plenty in hand that day. He is up just 5lb for that which looks fair. He looks to be at his best over these extended trips and I expect him to outrun his odds as at the very least I can’t have him out the frame so 13/2 looks generous to me. I see him as more of a 5/1 chance and I think he’ll get well backed.

Strictlyadancer is the favourite at the time of writing and is the main danger in the field. He has landed a hat-trick of wins over the last 2 months and even with a 7lb penalty he will surely go well in his attempt for a 4-timer. Of the rest The Mighty Don could be overpriced if repeating his latest run behind Yala Enki but he needs to jump better.

Aintree 3.15

With 3 wins from his first 4 starts VALUE TIP looks the one to be on in the lucky last at Aintree on Saturday. This son of Jeremy looks progressive having put a good yardstick in Bass Rock firmly in his place by 8 and a half lengths at Ayr back in March. That is good form and back from an absence he justified strong support to win by 13 lengths at Wetherby. He came clear on the bit and was never getting beaten. This is obviously tougher but he is open to further improvement and an opening mark of 128 surely underestimates him? The yard continue to go great guns and he looks to have plenty going for him which makes the 3/1 on offer at the time of writing look a bit too big.

Midnight River is a useful horse but he far from convinced on reappearance before taking a tumble and has enough to prove. Pounding Poet is probably the danger as he is in really good form right now.

Sandown 3.35

This handicap looks a good race to cap off the card at Sandown and let’s hope HUDSON DE GRUGY can make it the lucky last. He started the season with a nice win over over course and distance and you would expect him to be better for the run. He is up 4lb but his form over track and trip is impressive (1112) and I think he still has plenty to come. There’s a lot of pace on so he should get a nice trail into it before picking them off.

Metier is the danger after a great novice season ended him getting heavily beaten by Appreciate It in the Supreme. His form before that could see him go well here on his seasonal reappearance. Benson definitely has an engine and wasn’t seen to best effect on return so also deserves a mention in an open race.
