Cheltenham 1.30 Bob Olinger (1/1)

Stamped himself as one of the best novices around winning the Ballymore head in chest last year; 2-2 over fences this term, jumping better at Punchestown last time; better ground will help and should have too many gears.

I can’t wait for this race! BOB OLINGER arguably put in one of the most impressive performances to win the Ballymore at last years Festival. His jumping has come under scrutiny since going chasing as he did look rather laboured at Gowran on chase debut but when you look into it further Henry de Bromhead had both A Plus Tard and Minella Indo beaten in that race so for him to not be at his best but still come out on top speaks volumes for me. He jumped much better when following up at Punchestown and the second Capodanno is certainly no backnumber. His only career defeat has come at the hands of Ferny Hollow on his hurdles debut and I think he’ll make it 6 in a row here.

Galopin Des Champs is obviously the danger having looked so impressive but for me he already looks a stayer and I just think the selection will have too many gears when the taps are turned on. Mullins speaks about Galopin Des Champs as a Gold Cup horse and I think he could easily finish a creditable second here and still come away with a bright future ahead. With L’homme Presse and Bravemansgame head to the Brown Advisory so this has cut up badly and we only have 4 runners now. Galopin Des Champs looks the pace angle and I just expect the selection to track him through before hopefully eating up the ground on the turn for home.

– needs to have run this year

Cheltenham 2.10 Alaphilippe (7/1)

Caught the eye travelling well before only finishing fifth at Warwick to qualify for this; dropped 2lb from that; trained for this and looks set to run a big race under Paddy Brennan; Festival form a big plus too.

Going through the race over the years it does tend to favour those prominent in the market and I really like the profile of ALAPHILIPPE. He is unexposed at this trip and was given the text book ride in the qualifier. He travelled so well that day and then was given an easy time in it finishing fifth which was enough to qualify for the race. He was actually dropped 2lb for that plus it was his first run of the season so he could be far better than that mark and has a big chance.

At a bigger price PILEON looks like he could have plenty more to come over this trip. You can put a line through his last run as it would have been too soft for him and he should be able to continue his progress here. He was dropped a couple of pounds for that last run and looks a massive price at the time of writing.

Winter Fog for Emmet Mullins is the danger and the favourite at the time of writing but I don’t fully trust him to see the trip out but it is hard to write him off. Sire Du Berlais has won this twice and his claimer makes him interesting but I have my doubts now 10 years old.

Cheltenham 2.50 Allaho (4/6)

High-class chaser who bossed the opposition in this last year winning easily; gained second Grade 1 victory in the John Durkan in December; no issue following up at Thurles latest; looks to have it all going for him again.

With a 12-length demolition job in this last year ALLAHO has to be one of the most confident bets of the week to reproduce that. His form is progressive and that romp at Thurles last time was as impressive as it gets given the nature of the race. He jumped well and made all and never looked in any danger. Fakir D’oudairies has since come over to these shores and won the Betfair Ascot Chase convincingly so the form has been franked since. He will go hard from the flag-fall and likely put these under pressure from an early stage.

The opposition is certainly not weak by any means but I don’t see anything good enough in here to get him out his comfort zone. Conflated obviously won the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown last time and has to be respected on that but whether he can transfer that form to Cheltenham is another question – this is a different test back down in trip. Eldorado Allen looks fairly solid from an each way perspective but the horse I’m going to have a saver on is JANIDIL for Willie Mullins. He has some very strong form most notably chasing home Allaho only beaten 2 lengths at Punchestown earlier in the season. He holds Melon on that run and should run well at a juicy price.

Shan Blue remains a horse with potential and I think Dan Skelton has done the right thing giving him time to get over that heavy fall at Wetherby. He drops back in trip and if none the worse after the last day could also run a big race. It will be interesting to see how Harry Skelton rides him as mixing it with Allaho early is surely not the way to go. I think he’ll drop in and if he settles he could run a nice race as well so I wouldn’t put you off. Melon was back to winning ways in the Red Mills at Gowran and he has tons of Festival form but this is a big ask.

Cheltenham 3.30 Klassical Dream (4/1)

Supreme winner who really impressed winning the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown last year; returned with a convincing win in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown; failed to give his running at Gowran; can bounce back.

This years Stayers looks a really competitive renewal with plenty of these beating each other over the last season or so. KLASSICAL DREAM really improved for the step-up to 3 miles and I know people will say he stole all those lengths from Flooring Porter when beating him at Leopardstown but he was still travelling so well at the line. Mullins admitted he got a bit greedy running him last time out at Gowran and you can likely put a line through that. If he maintains his progress at this trip he is a very exciting runner in this.

With the form of these all quite muddling I will have a saver on PAISLEY PARK who stayed on incredibly well to beat Champ in the Cleeve Hurdle. There should be plenty of pace on and if Aidan Coleman uses his one big burst at the right time he could be flying home at the finish. There are dangers galore including the classy Champ, Flooring Porter and Thyme Hill who was well fancied for this before missing out last year.

Cheltenham 4.10 Imperial Alcazar (6/1)

Progressive hurdler who has taken well to fences bumping into Silver Forever and then Pats Fancy before winning impressively over C&D on Trials Day; up 8lb but more to come and should be up with the pace.

It can often pay to race handily in the Plate and it’s worth looking for horses that have won at Cheltenham earlier in the season. IMPERIAL ALCAZAR fits the trends having won impressively over C&D on Trials Day. He is unexposed as a chaser and better is yet to come. The 8lb rise certainly demands more but I like his profile coming into this and he is likely going to be in the box seat under Paddy Brennan. He has quite a big weight of 11 stone 9 but with this likely run to suit it’s no surprise to see him figuring fairly prominently in the betting.

I can also see GRAND PARADIS going close for Gordon Elliott. This good looking grey reached a decent level over hurdles in just a handful of starts and after falling on chase debut at Down Royal and pulling up at Fairyhouse he managed to get back on track with the pick of his recent efforts going down just half a length on penultimate start. He certainly wasn’t disgraced when second to Blue Sari at Gowran last month and an opening mark of 145 for his handicap debut may well prove lenient. He will also be up near the pace which is another big positive.

At a monster price PRESENTANDCOUNTING could be interesting for Donald McCain and Brian Hughes. This son of Presenting rattled off a four-timer over fences last year and was last seen finishing behind Tea Clipper who ran well in the Ultima earlier in the week. He has been put away since and has won fresh a couple of times before so this has likely been the plan for a while. He could have more to come off a mark of 143 and looks worth chancing at monster odds. Plenty of dangers obviously with Celebre D’allen hugely respected at the top of the betting. He is a 10yo though and is short enough. The Glancing Queen is feared and Simply The Betts also made my shortlist.

Cheltenham 4.50 Dinoblue (5/2)

Good looking chestnut mare who created a big impression bounding clear to win by 15 lengths on debut at Clonmel in January; visual impression backed up by the clock; sure to improve and looks the one to beat.

Willie Mullins has virtually dominated this race winning 5 of the 6 runnings with some really classy sorts. He does have plenty of runners in this years field but DINOBLUE could be the star after a really impressive debut at Clonmel. She ran out a 15 length winner and set the best time figure around despite it only being her first run. She may not have the experience of some of these but looks a classy mare who could take a lot of beating if improving again.

I am going to also have a small bet on SAY GOODBYE at a ridiculous big price. She ran well behind Party Central last time out and has a decent swing at the weights. She finished that race so well and hit the line strongly. She could come really late and relish the hill so 33/1 is worth an each-way bet.

Brandy Love is the main danger if they can manage her quirks along with Love Envoi who is unbeaten but just has the doubt over the British form. She has a great attitude for the job though and should find off the bridle so will likely run well at a price.

Cheltenham 5.30 Frontal Assault (9/2)

Potentially really well handicapped given he got his mark over fences based on 3 starts over inadequate trips; sure to do better as his stamina is drawn out up in distance and no surprise to see him head the betting.

I’m all over FRONTAL ASSAULT here for Gordon Elliott. I’ve done well for most of the week opposing favourites in handicaps but I can’t get away from this Gigginstown runner. He won 2 from 3 over hurdles before running creditably behind Galopin Des Champs in the Martin Pipe and he has shaped encouragingly over fences this season. He caught the eye going down just half a length behind Floueur at Fairyhouse and now sent handicapping off a mark of 145 up significantly in trip I think he has plenty going for him. He will be staying on strongly up the hill and if he can avoid trouble early on in the race he looks a cracking bet even at 9/2.

In a handicap like this with 25 runners you’ve got to have a saver or two so I’m putting forward AIN’T THAT A SHAME to run a big race for Henry de Bromhead. The trends suggest a horse that hasn’t won this season can go close and this son of Jeremy fits the bill. He was pitched into the deep end on chase debut at Fairyhouse probably with an eye to running in this and performed creditably when third to Stattler. He then bumped into Galopin Des Champs before going down just a neck last time. A mark of 144 may well underestimate him so he should go close under talented 3lb claimer Ben Harvey.

My second each way saver and final selection in the race is POWERSTOWN PARK at a massive price. He is down the bottom of the weights and won with enough in hand at Hereford to make him a potential player here. He beat an in-form horse in Oscar Robertson last time with the pair miles clear and even off a 6lb rise could be dangerous here if things pan out favourably. At 40/1 he is worth covering each way as I can see him picking off a few up the hill. Plenty of dangers in here including School Boy Hours who has Derek O’Connor booked, Mister Coffey if his jumping holds up and Mint Condition if he handles the occasion.
