Punchestown 3.40

A Hunters Chase to kick off Day 4 of the Punchestown Festival so not the strongest opinion but I do think AN DROICHEAD GORM will take a bit of beating. He was only denied half a length under Rules at Wexford last summer and would have blown the cobwebs away winning a point last month. He has a 7lb claimer booked too which will help and it’s no surprise to see him figure prominently in the betting.

Alpha Male is the obvious danger but is an 11yo now and might just be susceptible to younger legs. He has won this before though and often places so can’t be dismissed. Jigginstown King represents last years winning trainer so is also worth a mention.

The money was down for Fighter Allen at Tramore and he didn’t disappoint. We were on him that day and he clearly has a big shout here but he is short enough in such a competitive race and I think the value lays with BLUE SARI for Willie Mullins. This horse has a bit to prove after finishing well held at Fairyhouse but his win at Gowran prior to that was pleasing and he will have a big say if bouncing back.

Busselton ran as well as connections could have hoped really when second to Bob Olinger at the Cheltenham Festival last month and if the cheekpieces help going back on now pitched into handicap company he might prove best of the rest.

It’s hard to knock ELIMAY on what we’ve seen recently and while she didn’t need to be at her best to win at the Cheltenham Festival last month it was still quite a convincing performance and she sets the standard here. She obviously won it last year and it’s no surprise to see her trading at the odds she is right now as she is by far and away the most likely winner for me.

Scarlet And Dove is a likeable mare and she only went down half a length to Elimay at Cheltenham. She will give it a go but still is likely to fall short. Dolcita has won 2 of her last 3 and that was a career best last time but she still has enough to find.

Obviously not from a betting proposition but I honestly can’t wait to see HONEYSUCKLE again. It really was goosebumps at Cheltenham last month as she made it a perfect 15 from 15 and while it is a shame for racing that Constitution Hill doesn’t line up it will still be great to see her in the winners enclosure again. She is impossibly to oppose and if she travels the way she did last month they won’t see which way she goes here. I love seeing her go through the gears and she should get some reception.

I think Adagio might be the value to chase her home. He clearly has an engine and while he ran a stinker at Cheltenham he is a lot better than that and the cheekpieces could be a good move. If you can forgive him that last run he is decent value to fill second spot.

This is an interesting race with State Man stepping into this company but I am going to side with THREE STRIPE LIFE. He had finished behind Sir Gerhard twice earlier in the season before getting a deserved Grade 1 at Aintree earlier this month. He has had a long season but must be holding form well to run here and will show his class.

State Man is the danger after winning the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in eye catching fashion. He has to prove himself at the top still but will be a threat to the whole field if travelling like he did the last run. Kilcruit won at this meeting last season and should land at least a place.

Punchestown 6.35

Billaway did so well to win at Cheltenham last month but that run is likely to have taken a fair bit out of him and he might be worth opposing here. He didn’t really travel that well either so if he is forced to make up that amount of ground again I’m not sure he’ll have it in him and at odds-on that isn’t a chance I want to take. VAUCELET is flying and looks worth taking him on with. He loves this ground and if he gets into a nice rhythm he might always be doing enough to see this out.

Dorking Cock didn’t need to improve to win at Down Royal and then won a point last time. He has to be respected but I think he might be found wanting. Solomn Grundy hacked up last time and might be huge value to chase the selection home if Billaway blows out.

Vaucelet 6/4

Punchestown 7.10

Great chance for EL FABIOLO to get back to winning ways after getting within a neck of Jonbon at Aintree. That is obviously really strong form and this horse remains open to further improvement. I thought he’d be shorter than 4/6 and I know it can sound silly when they are such a short price but that could even end up looking value come post time. I expect him to cruise into this and he should be too classy for this field.

Bring On The Night was fourth in the Supreme behind Constitution Hill but was left standing. If you look at collateral form with Jonbon he obviously has enough to find. I think Ha D’or might be the one to finish second after a good run behind Flame Bearer at Fairyhouse last time.

Punchestown 7.10

El Fabiolo 4/6

Punchestown 7.45

Like we saw yesterday these bumpers are never worth getting too heavily involved in but I can see O’MOORE PARK running a nice race. This Walk In The Park gelding was beaten 12 lengths at Thurles last time but the winner looked a nice prospect and has acquitted himself well in defeat at Fairyhouse since. He is open to improvement and looks one of the more likelier ones with a handy 5lb claimer booked.

Don Chalant is favourite at the time of writing and is a stablemate to the selection so has to be feared. He only just failed to get up at Navan but on the bare form needs to improve. Golden Wonder’s also catches the eye for shrewd connections and can run a nice race.
