Goodwood 1.50
A fiercely competitive start to Glorious Goodwood this year but there is one I’m really keen on at a double-figure price. BELL ROCK has only actually run once at Goodwood and that was as a 4yo where he finished a good third behind Maydanny. We know he handles the track on that and he has been running well enough this season to make him a big player off his current mark. He just looked outpaced at York last month so this extra couple of furlongs will really help him and with Harry Davies claiming 5lb I can see him running a big race.
Plenty of dangers likely headed by Caradoc who might not have won since 2019 but he often catches the eye in defeat. He has only run twice at this track and finished second on both starts so that is encouraging as well. For his age he remains quite lightly raced so I wouldn’t put you off. Of the rest Legend Of Dubai hacks up at Newmarket before blowing out last time and might be able to bounce back here.
Goodwood 2.25
It was hard not to be impressed by HOLLOWAY BOY‘s win in the Chesham at Royal Ascot providing one of the bigger shocks of the week. He won it nicely first-time out against horses that had fairly big reputations. That was the first time a horse had won on debut at Royal Ascot since way back in 1996 so that tells you a lot about how big a performance it was. He is such a big horse with plenty of scope he looks certain to improve from that run and if he does he should be good enough to make it 2-2 here.
A lot of these can match the selection for time figures but don’t necessarily have as much scope with the main danger likely being Mysterious Night. He looked to lack speed when third to Persian Force so should appreciate this extra furlong but will likely need to improve to make a race of it with the favourite. Of the rest the unbeaten Dear My Friend also deserves respect after that Beverley victory.
Following an eye-catching run in the Platinum Jubilee SACRED is a really strong selection to make it a perfect 3-3 over 7f. This filly ran out an impressive winner of the Group 2 Hungerford at Newbury and was only beaten a length at the top level at Royal Ascot last month. She just had too much to do on that occasion and was hitting top stride as the line came. She moves back up a furlong in trip now and this definitely looks her optimum. Her only other run over this trip saw her beat Saffron Beach in the Nell Gwyn and we know how good that filly is now. Her form stacks up wherever you look and I’m expecting her to take all the beating.
Lusail has won twice at this level and ran a cracker to get within a head of Coroebus in the St James’s Palace before going close at the top level in France last time. 3yos don’t have a great record in this but he still looks the danger. Pogo is chasing a hat-trick but he will likely set this up for the selection.
Goodwood 3.35
The ground is still likely to be a little quick for Trueshan so despite market support I’m not convinced he’ll take his chance. If he does he would definitely have a chance but the ground will be far from ideal which can often make the difference at the top level. That leaves the Ascot Gold Cup form front and centre and I can see the same outcome with a KYPRIOS win. He did pin Stradrivarius in but he himself wasn’t ideally placed but you saw when Mojo Star came to him last time he really changed gear and is good for more than that win. If Thunderous gives him a good lead here he will be hard to beat.
Stradivarius will be a danger in a race he loves but I am not sure he can beat the selection even with more luck. Coltrane could be a good bet to follow the selection home as he is improving all the time and is hard not to like following impressive wins at Royal Ascot and Sandown the last twice.
Goodwood 4.10
This will be fast and furious and I know he is at the top of the market but I have to back CELSIUS again as he eyes up the hat-trick! He has always threatened to be smart but quickly became expensive to follow but really looks to have turned a corner lately and was impressive enough again at Newmarket last time. He ran on well and for me was value for more than the winning margin. He had the progressive Dusky Lord back in fourth and should be up to confirming that form here.
Given the nature of the race and that there can be hard luck stories from time to time I’m going to have an each way saver on STONE OF DESTINY at a nice double-figure price. He has dropped right down to a mark of just 84 now (9lb below his last winning mark) and could never really get a clear run at Ascot last time. If he gets the splits he could go close. Dangers include Dusky Lord and Equality with the latter likely to show up better than he did at Ascot latest.
Goodwood 4.45
The biggest field for this race in the last 20 years which is good to see given the current state of racing. It is a tough race to call not knowing much about these but I will have a small interest in MASTER OF CHANT who has a lower draw than most of those above him in the market and the form stacks up. His debut run has produced plenty of winners with the horse that beat him running in a much better race later in the week and he looks underestimated in the market for sure.
Mischief Magic has very good form as well behind Royal Scotsman who has ran well in a Group 2 since so he is clearly a good sort. He is much shorter in the market and although he will be a danger his higher draw puts me off. Of the rest the Hannon pair Supreme King and Hale End are worth noting with his record in this race.
Goodwood 5.20
When you see a filly win as easily as CRYSTAL CAPRICE did from this yard they become of serious interest. She still looked quite raw at Yarmouth but kept galloping forward and poured it on in the closing stages. She is sure to keep improving with experience and an opening mark of just 87 could prove seriously lenient in time.
Breaking Light impressed winning at Haydock on return following a wind op and could be the one to give her most to think about under Hollie Doyle. System only went down a neck to Random Harvest at Ascot last time and might have more to offer over a mile so could be a bit of value to run into a place at a bigger price. Wilderness Girl could go well but she has an awful draw.
Goodwood 5.55
A really competitive handicap to cap off day 1 at Goodwood and with the majority of the field liking to race prominently it should be a cracker. CRAZY LUCK is the one I think will take advantage of the pace that is on and swoop late. He only wins by small margins but it has helped keep his handicap mark low meaning that Harry Davies taking off 5lb means he is better off than his last win and will go well for his hat-trick.
Kidwah is favourite at the time of writing and has to be a threat to all back at this trip. He lost his unbeaten run at Newmarket on handicap debut over 7 furlongs and could be better than his mark here at 6 furlongs. Last years winner Lovely Breeze always goes well here and is probably overpriced and could run a place at least.
