Goodwood 1.50

A really open handicap to kick off day 2 at Glorious Goodwood with plenty of improvers in here it is hard to rule many out. BOX TO BOX gets a narrow vote at a nice each way price after really stepping forward each time he goes up in trip. His last run at Chester was very impressive and I think a 6lb penalty won’t be enough to stop a big run off this mark so I’m quite surprised to see him ease out to 12/1 in the betting.

The main danger is likely Soulcombe at the bottom of the weights who like the selection is 2 from 2 at longer trips and is still improving. I was there when he won at Ascot and visually it was quite impressive. Secret State is a threat to all too with his Ascot form working out really well but he does carry top weight which is my only reservation and he is obviously favourite.

Goodwood 2.25

I’m not all that keen on those at the head of the betting here. I did initially think Heredia was undone by how it panned out at Sandown but given Zanbaq has been well held since as well now I’m starting to wonder about the Sandringham form somewhat. I’m going to chance BENEFIT coming good for Clive Cox. She chased home Sense Of Duty and Flotus at Haydock before improving to win at Salisbury. She just raced a bit too keenly at York but that form is red hot and given her breeding gives hope for progress back up to 7f it wouldn’t surprise me to see her rattle a few cages.

Soft Whisper is on a hat-trick and is going the right way but her wide draw is definitely a cause for concern especially as she is likely to push forward. Of the rest Primo Bacio is capable of a big run having finished fourth in the Falmouth at Newmarket. We saw the third Sandrine win the Lennox here yesterday.

Goodwood 3.00

This doesn’t look a deep race outside the top 2 in the market and I have to be on ROCKET RODNEY again. He just lost out narrowly to the classy Little Big Bear in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot which is top level form with winners galore coming from that race. He then went on to win well at Sandown at Listed level showing a smart turn of foot and looks like he will take Group 3 races and above in his stride. If he improves again it’s hard to see him beaten here.

Walbank is the main danger as he was well fancied before finishing second in a messy finish in the Norfolk Stakes. He will certainly go well here but may need to step forward to beat the selection who looks the better of the pair going into this. Eddie’s Boy bossed the Super Sprint but is held by the selection on previous form.

Goodwood 3.35

It’s a shame Coroebus misses this engagement as it would have been an interesting race with Baaeed. He is impossible to oppose now though and while it will be great to see him strut his stuff again obviously at his current odds he is no betting proposition. I can see MODERN GAMES (WITHOUT THE FAVOURITE) running a big race for William Buick though and at 4/1 without Baaeed he looks a decent bet. He was really progressive last season and won the French Guineas on reappearance. He hasn’t been disgraced the last twice and might still have more in the locker yet.

Chindit did us proud to win the Summer Mile at Ascot earlier in the month but it’s a big ask to back that performance up here in top company. Alcohol Free was back to her best winning the July Cup and will probably be the one battling it out for second with Modern Games. Order Of Australia won at the Curragh 10 days ago and this might just come soon enough.

Goodwood 4.10

This looks wide open and I am going to take on the favourite with two at nice each way prices. LYRICAL LADY for Hughie Morrison won well in handicap company over this trip at Salisbury before going down in trip to Listed level where she ran well behind some good horses. She will be better back at this trip and will go well at a nice each way price in a tricky race.

Another that appeals at double-figure odds at the time of writing is ROUSAY for Richard Hannon. She seemed to improve for the step up to this trip last time and will likely have more to come. She has gone well at Goodwood before and I think she can outrun her odds. The favourite is the danger Sea Speedwell who ran well on her comeback run at this trip for the first time and will likely improve. But I do feel she is shorter than ideal in the market in a race of this nature.

Goodwood 4.45

This test should be right up the street of THE PLATINUM QUEEN and I think she can make it 3 wins from just 4 starts here for Richard Fahey. While she was never a factor in the Queen Mary the experience clearly wasn’t lost on her given the manner of her York romp last time. She is clearly on an upward trajectory now and with potential to do better again she could have too much for these rivals. She raced quite freely last time but that didn’t stop her winning and I think if they go hard she’ll just be poised in the box seat.

Star Of Lady M is likeable and bounced back to win at Musselburgh so looks the biggest danger if building on that. All The Time is also noted with the promise of more to come now. Cruise was quite an expensive breeze-up purchase and she showed promise when fourth at Newmarket but she might need more experience to win a race like this.

Goodwood 5.20

Richard Hannon has such a good record in this race winning 3 of the last 4 renewals and I think this could be MUMS TIPPLE‘s race to bounce back to winning ways. On his previous form he is really well handicapped and his last run really showed he can pounce off this mark. If he can show the same level of form he will go very close at a nice each way price. It’s amazing to think he is still just a 5yo as it feels like he has been around for so long. He doesn’t lack speed so I expect Sean Levey to have him well positioned which could be a big plus at this track.

Wild Lion is the main danger after just losing out on a hat-trick at Leicester last time. He hung badly that day so is likely still learning. Stockpyle is the other horse in here who is thriving at this trip of late and will go well in his hat-trick bid. His trainer was interviewed last week and gave him a glowing report.
