Goodwood 1.50
This looks a wide open long distance race to kick off the card with a tentative vote for SOLENT GATEWAY who I think is fairly unexposed over extreme distances. He ran too free in the Chester Cup which saw the headgear reapplied and it seemed to work wonders in the Northumberland Plate behind Trueshan. If he runs to that level over this trip he has to be taken seriously and will run a big race.
At a much bigger price AUTHOR’S DREAM is worth a small bet as he has shown he stays this trip and goes well at Goodwood just losing out in this 2 years ago. His trainer William Knight has hit form lately and his price could be way too big. Reshoun is the main danger as he always runs well in these events but top-weight does put me off slightly.
Goodwood 2.25
After winning his first two starts William Knight clearly felt CHECKANDCHALLENGE was worth pitching into the deep end to run him in the Guineas. He was held up that day but could never land a blow and finished right out the back. He was given time after and bounced back with a big run on handicap debut at Sandown at the start of the month. He stayed on really well in the closing stages and was beaten less than a length. He will come on again for that and while this is no easy task he clearly still possesses plenty of potential.
Bayside Boy is proven at a better level than this having won a Group 2 at Doncaster so clearly has to be feared dropping into this company but he has a bit to prove following two mediocre runs. Berkshire Shadow may pose a greater threat as that third behind Mighty Ulysses is working out really well and looks red-hot form.
I would usually try and get the favourite beat in a race of this nature but NOBLE DYNASTY just jumps off the page as a good bet in this. He won well at Newmarket earlier in the month giving a lot of weight away and comes here on favourable terms. He has a good draw and will be thereabouts at the finish. With Buick riding so well he has possibly been a little overbet here but like I have said his chance is obvious and I wouldn’t want to oppose.
With 20 runners set to go to post for this I will have a saver on EILEAN DUBH who has won all of his last 3 starts over a mile and his form is working out well. He is drawn in 6 will likely be a plus and he should run a big race at an each way price. Jimi Hendrix is one I really like for this too but I am put off by the really wide draw and I think Shining Blue could be a greater danger as he could still be anything winning all 3 of his starts to date for Saeed bin Suroor.
Goodwood 3.35
Another tricky race which is the story of the day! I can see ACKLAM EXPRESS going very well here though. It feels like he has been around for a while but he is still just a 4yo. He left his reappearance run behind to finish an excellent third in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot last month. That was a massive run to get within 5 lengths of the beast that is Nature Strip. The second Twilight Calls is improving and Mooneista was behind and she has been narrowly touched off over in Ireland since. He won over C&D as a 2yo so handles the track and might surprise a few here.
Raasel is certainly on the up having won 3 of his last 4 and looks a serious player but I thought it might be worth backing one at a massive price in EXISTENT for Stuart Williams. He was down the field in the King’s Stand and found Raasel a length and a half too strong at Sandown but I feel like he is winning up for a big run and this track could play to his strengths. He will likely come up short for win purposes but he looks a really nice each way bet so I’ve had to include him.
Goodwood 4.10
This race very much revolves around Rebel’s Romance who won really well at Newmarket last month and you can see why he is favourite. His trainer has said he has got better since that run but the track may not suit him. So it is clear he is talented but hard to fully trust on a track of the nature of Goodwood. I am willing to take him on with MAX VEGA who I think can go very close on his best form. His last two runs at this trip have seen him win a Group 3 and a second behind Ilaraab. If he can run to that level he is overpriced in here for sure.
Obviously Rebel’s Romance is the main danger but Fancy Man is the other I think will go well at this trip and can make up the top 3 in a race that I don’t think is that deep. I think the fact Regal Reality is second fav shows you how winnable this is. He is obviously talented but is a tricky individual who I would never trust fully to go and deliver. He is at least in form after that second at Sandown but he does go well at that track.
Goodwood 4.45
I’m taking a chance on a couple in here at big prices as I think it’s another difficult race to assess. If you look at REMARKABLE FORCE‘s win over Eddie’s Boy at Musselburgh on just his second start that would give him a major shout in here. I know he was heavily beaten at Royal Ascot and then failed to recover after a slow start at Sandown but I still think he has potential and there is something about him I like. He strikes me as a horse with more to come and quite simply he is overpriced in here. An opening mark of 90 now handicapping could underestimate him.
The other one I’m chancing is RUMSTAR for Jonathan Portman. This colt actually finished in front of Remarkable Force in that Sandown race at the start of the month. He went badly left out the stalls and also had a few excuses. I think he has more to come if the race pans out and even off a stiff enough mark I think he’ll give us a good run for our money. Plenty of dangers including the favourite Bolt Action who wasn’t disgraced in the Windsor Castle and George Boughey’s filly California Gem who is on a hat-trick after impressing again at Beverley last time.
Goodwood 5.20
I’m really looking forward to seeing OMNISCIENT out again for Sir Mark Prescott. He really caught the eye when third behind Cabinet Of Clowns at Salisbury last month and I thought Luke Morris gave him a bit of a shocker when only third at Wolverhampton. He was given a lot to do but in hindsight this may have been the plan all along so it wouldn’t have paid for him to win that. He went up in trip and improved as expected to win at Yarmouth last week and that means he can run in this under a penalty. He’ll love the extra furlong and looks the one to beat.
David Menuisier’s training of Caius Chorister is something like what Sir Mark Prescott would do with her improving 32lb over her 4 wins which is incredible. She won easily again at Epsom last time but she is up 17lb from that and in much deeper company now. I think the handicapper might have her where he wants her so it surprises me she is so short in the betting. At a huge price Paradias might be value to hit the frame as he impressed at Yarmouth and while he blew out at Haydock I think he had excuses so he might bounce back and run into the frame.
