Goodwood 1.05
This opener very much revolves around Dubawi colt CLASSIC who ran a really promising race on debut to finish fourth at Newbury. He was well backed that day and a slow start ultimately cost him. He was denied a run when trying to make headway and then had to switch left away from where the action was materialising. He just couldn’t peg them back in time but it was a really promising run. As long as the track doesn’t catch him out he should make the breakthrough here.
No Nay Never colt Loyal Touch was a good third at Salisbury on debut and he looks the danger if progressing from that. The Foxes caught the eye on debut but couldn’t back that up in the Chesham. He still has potential so could run a nice race despite that blip. Of the debutants Scorch looks the most interesting but he’ll need to be pretty smart to win first time out here.
Goodwood 1.40
A really small field for the consolation race this year but it does look to have plenty of quality. Lethal Levi is going to be popular after dominating a good field at Newmarket last week but he won’t have it easy off the front with plenty of pace in here and I will take him on with DREAM COMPOSER at an each way price. He has held his form so well with figures of 221124 which included a course and distance win. He should get a good lead into the race and outrun his odds for sure.
The favourite Lethal Levi is obviously the main danger but I also think Abate could run a big race if bouncing back to form after his last run with the in-form Hollie Doyle jocked up. Nelson Gay is also worth a mention given he looks to be off a fair enough mark and he didn’t shape badly at Sandown latest.
I can see FOX DEGREE proving popular for this so it might be worth taking the 3/1 on offer at the time of writing. This King Power filly showed promise on each of her first three starts and improved on handicap debut to win readily at Ffos Las last time. She loomed up like a well handicapped horse and took it up a furlong from home before galloping clear. The second Kaasib had good form heading into that and the third New Hope Bullet has won convincingly since to frank the form. She is up 6lb but I don’t think that will be enough to anchor her here.
Immortal Beauty went down just a head at Ffos Las last time and with more to come she looks the biggest danger. Liberation Bay did well to win last time and has won 2 of her last 3 now but she does lack scope and might find one or two of these too strong.
Goodwood 2.10
Mark Johnston has dominated this race with 4 of the last 7 winners coming from his yard. He runs three here with SOAPY STEVENS looking his best chance of a winner bidding to land a hat-trick. He is versatile regards trip but I think this will really suit him. He was keen in his last win and still sustained his effort to win so a 3lb penalty should be no problem and he will go close.
Trawlerman is definitely much better than his last run and could be a threat but the main danger for me is Cemhaan who like Trawlerman found all sorts of issues last time out and if back in form is handicapped to go well again. Valley Forge is also worth a mentioning dropping back in trip after contesting the Northumberland Plate last time.
Newmarket (July) 2.25
This looks a good race with a mix of proven form and potential on show. I’m quite surprised to see STAR FORTRESS as big as 9/2 at the time of writing. This Sea The Stars filly was an eye-catcher on debut finishing second to Special Envoy. That colt has since won a handicap off a mark of 92 so that looks really solid form. She quickly improved to win impressively at Chelmsford and that performance had plenty of class about it. She has more to come up to a mile and a half and while this is tougher she is one I want to keep on side going forward.
Rose Of Kildare has plenty of experience on side and was only beaten narrowly in a Listed race on return so sets a good standard. Whatever beats her will probably win the race. Elegant Verse impressed at Redcar but then disappointed at Newbury. If she can learn to settle then she is probably a nice enough prospect as well but there isn’t masses of pace on here which won’t help.
Goodwood 2.45
I am gutted Free Wind doesn’t run here as she would have very likely won this well. It leaves a fairly open Lillie Langtry Stakes this year. EMILY DICKINSON gets a tentative vote over the favourite. She has great form at Group level with her latest run a staying on fourth in the Irish Oaks 2 weeks ago. Based on her run behind Rosscarbery she will be better back at this trip and has to go close.
Sea La Rosa is favourite thanks to her second behind Free Wind last time and she will likely be better at this trip. There isn’t a lot between them but the selection could have more to come and make the weight allowance count. Camelot filly Yesyes will need to return all guns blazing to land a blow here.
Goodwood 3.20
Commanche Falls won this last year from stall 23 and he might have a squeak of defending his crown off a 2lb higher mark. He reared in the stalls and unseated at Royal Ascot last time though and doesn’t exactly come here with confidence high. He’ll likely have his supporters but my main play in the race would be WHENTHEDEALINSDONE for Roger Teal. Now this horse looked to be going places winning at this track a year ago and he met trouble when seventh at Ascot last time. He is off the same mark and looks sure to go close.
I can’t help but back GREAT AMBASSADOR in this as well. I have always thought this horse has a big one in him and he was far from disgraced when seventh behind Minzaal at Newbury last time. If things pan out favourably this 5yo may well be in the mix at the business end. Dangers include Regional and Inver Park with the latter clearly thriving right now. At a bigger price Chil Chil could also be capable of running a big race.
Goodwood 3.55
A good mix of potentially big improvers and some more experienced sorts in here and 9/2 the field shows how competitive it is. I am going to take a chance on WODETON backing up his easy win at Epsom last time out. His trainer Andrew Balding has a good record in the race and the 7 furlongs here should suit. It was a big step forward at Epsom so if repeating that improvement he will run massive race.
Positive Impact ran a cracker at Newmarket earlier this month and rates the main danger if in the same form. Of the rest improvers Spirit Of Nguru and Zero Carbon will have a say in the finish in what looks a good renewal.
