York 1.50

What a week ahead! The rain looks like it’s largely going to miss the Knavesmire now so there shouldn’t be any excuses on this ground. A fiercely competitive opener and I’d expect nothing less. I’m going to play two in here with my main hope being MAKANAH for Julie Camacho. This son of Mayson loves this track getting within a head of victory when second to Dakota Gold earlier in the season. He then went down less than 3 lengths to ante-post favourite for the Nunthorpe Royal Aclaim. He ran well given he was on the wrong side in the Stewards’ Cup 3 weeks ago and from stall 1 here should be set to run another big run.

I’ve also backed one on the other side of the track in ZARZYNI for David Barron. He caught the eye when third to Mountain Peak at Ascot last month. He only went down a length and a half and racing off the same mark should go close if his draw doesn’t go against him. Plenty of dangers obviously headed by Dakota Gold. At a huge price Nomadic Empire might be capable of bouncing back here too so might be worth a nibble.

York 2.25

This years Acomb looks a cracker with strong cases for the top 4 in the market. With plenty of these likely to improve they could all be Group winners in the future. LOCAL DYNASTY is the one I thought might improve the most after a very impressive debut at Newmarket just 12 days ago. He looked like he was still learning and will step forward for that run. I know the yard rate him as a potential star of the future and he has to go close here so no surprise to see him at the top of the betting.

The main dangers are Mill Stream and Chaldean with the former running another potential Godolphin superstar close last month. The level shown in his two runs should see him go well with more to come. Chaldean really improved for the step up to this trip and will keep improving over 7 furlongs and over further.

York 3.00

Charlie Appleby won this last year with Yibir and also took it back in 2018 with Old Persian so has a good record in recent years. He has the favourite in SECRET STATE and it’s easy to see why. This Dubawi colt has won 4 in a row since finishing second on debut. He impressed beating Deauville Legend at Royal Ascot (giving him 4lb) and then stepped forward again to win convincingly at Glorious Goodwood last month. That last race should work out well in time so I think it is strong form.

Deauville Legend looks the danger again as he improved to win at Newmarket following that good second at Goodwood and then bumped into New London last time. He is a nice horse so should give his running once more. Aikhal is the unknown quantity in the race but I’m not entirely convinced he’ll back that impressive Curragh win up here and he might be found wanting in the closing stages.

York 3.35

The moment we have been waiting for all season BAAEED stepping up in trip. We will only see him run two more times and I think he will finish his career unbeaten. He is odds-on for this as I think he could prove even better over this trip as he goes through the gears and is always going best at the end of his races. It is his toughest test to date but as the odds suggest he should win this. He is obviously by Sea The Stars so is bred to stay this far so it surprises me some want to try and oppose him.

Mishriff and Native Trail will be the biggest threats especially the former back at his preferred trip. It makes for an interesting race with Alenquer out as there isn’t much obvious pace unless High Definition goes forward again. Mishriff is likely to be retired after this so connections will be hoping he can do himself proud.

York 4.10

Another tricky race heading over 2 miles. Master Milliner is greatly respected having followed up his Kempton win at Glorious Goodwood last month beating Super Superjack. That horse has let the form down since being well beaten at Ascot and up 5lb he might just be worth taking on. I’m going to back two in this with FRANKENSTELLA looking worth a go with the promise of more to come. She impressed winning in testing ground at Haydock last year and shaped well when third here behind Ahorsewithnoname back in May. Off the same mark she has likely been targeted at this and in a change of headgear she should give us a good run for our money.

The other one I like is THUNDEROUS for Mark Johnston. He has been highly tried all season and now going handicapping off a mark of 109 he should find this easier. I can see him going forward under Ryan Moore and if he gets into a decent rhythm he could have a major shout. Others to mention include Zoffee who ran well when third at Newmarket following back-to-back wins and then found his stamina stretched last time so should enjoy coming back in trip here.

York 4.45

Sprint handicaps are always tough and with 19 runners here I will have two darts at this one. CUBAN BREEZE has been in such good form lately and seems to thrive when kept on the go. She won over this trip at Ascot before winning again over 6 at Windsor. There doesn’t look to be that many contesting the lead so she could have this her own way a bit and will run a big race at an each way price.

FAST RESPONSE at a bigger price looks to have a solid chance for Karl Burke who won this race 2 years ago with Lady In France. She has been going close over this trip and gets an extra 4lb taken off her back by Sam Fielden which could make a massive difference and I expect her to outrun her odds. The two at the top of the market have to be respected on hat-tricks with Pink Crystal winning with a bit to spare over 6 furlongs. I actually think Sandbeck could be the bigger danger of the two after winning her last two at this trip and is clearly on the up.

York 5.20

Ramazan and Mrs U S A are both likely to be popular having won last time but I’m keen to look away from the top of the market for this and my main play will be STREETS OF GOLD for Eve Johnson Houghton. This Havana Gold colt made it a perfect 2-2 at Newmarket last month and that form has a strong look to it with the second Juliet Sierra winning easily next time out and even the fifth Tostado winning his next start as well. He has more to come now handicapping and looks a great each way play in an open looking race.

At a bigger price LEGEND OF XANADU was very impressive at Epsom on Oaks day and while he has been beaten 3 times since he ran in a Group 2 behind Royal Scotsman last time so that was a stiff enough ask and he will find this a bit easier on handicap debut. Could be in the mix. The other one that might be worth covering is LOST ANGEL for Clive Cox. She was impressive beating Pillow Talk on just her second start and I didn’t think she shaped badly when sixth behind Rumstar at Glorious Goodwood last month. She could surprise a few at big odds.
