York 1.50
Mahrajaan has been backed for this but I’m not massively convinced by his profile and he ran no sort of race here last month. Of those near the top of the market I thought LORD PROTECTOR had a good chance for Ralph Beckett. He definitely improved to win at Sandown on penultimate start and things didn’t exactly go his way at Goodwood. He was short of room when trying to make headway and did well to get as close as he did back in fifth in the end. He’s improving and with more to come back up to a mile and a half he should go close.
York 2.25
Obviously if Trueshan lines up he is a big danger but the ground is certainly not to his liking as he would have wanted much more rain. Coltrane ties in with the latter on that fourth at Goodwood so is also worthy of plenty of consideration.
This looks a decent renewal with the top 3 in here all having a touch of class about them. Royal Scotsman was obviously impressive at Goodwood and looks a smart horse going forward but I can’t help but be drawn towards NOBLE STYLE who overcame a slight knock back to win at Newmarket last time. He was meant to be heading to Goodwood but Charlie Appleby decided to ease him back in with a lesser race last time. He did that well and still looks really promising. He had Royal Scotsman back in fourth when he won on debut and should confirm that form here.
Marshman won despite running green again at Thirsk so he has to enter the reckoning but he hasn’t been properly tested yet and is coming up against some very nice horses here. I’ve decided to have an each way saver on CATCH THE PADDY for Kevin Ryan at a massive price. He won at Hamilton and then did it nice here last time. I think he’s got more to come given his scope and he might hit the frame so worth including. Chateau has ground to make up but is another one worthy of a mention in a good race.
York 3.35
York 4.10
I was all over AMANZOE in the Shergar Cup at Ascot last time and she certainly didn’t let me down winning well under Joanna Mason. I loved the way she went through that race and there was never really any danger. She kept on well and was always holding on. Her Sandown win before that was equally as impressive and now 2-2 over the trip she remains thoroughly unexposed. This will test her again but as her stamina is drawn out she is only going to get better for me so I’m keen to keep her on side once more. This track should suit too so I think she has plenty of positives again with Haggas still firing in the winners (30% strike rate in the past fortnight).
Shampion won going away at Windsor and looks a filly on the up but she lacks experience and this is much tougher. I thought State Occasion was the danger as she impressed at Goodwood and the second Rousay has franked the form since. Via Sistina beat the latter at Newmarket before struggling in soft ground at Doncaster so if she bounces back she is interesting from an each way angle.
York 4.45
York 5.20
Another horse that I was really keen on last time and he delivered in the shape of OPERATING. This War Front colt first caught my eye at Doncaster where he was still learning his trade and he improved from that to open his account at Windsor. He then went handicapping at Nottingham and proved his mark to be really lenient coming through virtually on the bridle to win impressively. I thought Martin Harley knew what he had under him that day and the way he picked them up was quite taking. He will need to improve again to win this but is a big horse who is clearly going the right way now. Ryan Moore is back in the saddle (rode him to win at Windsor) and an 8lb rise shouldn’t be enough to anchor him.
Bay Of Honour has won 3 of his 5 races and looks set to go well again but I actually think Golden Voice might prove the danger. He impressed at Sandown and while he was beaten at Redcar I don’t think he was at his best at that track and Lion Tower can be a very tough horse to pass. Leuven Power enjoyed the step up to a mile last time but these are much deeper waters in comparison to that race but he could still run well too.
My Daily Double
Both my NAP and NB run at York on Friday. I’ve backed them as a double and it pays really nice. Pays 18/1!
