York 1.50
I have been waiting for MIGHTY ULYSSES to run after his win at Newmarket in early July. He has gone close on all his runs this season which include two wins. His best bit of form is his run in the St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot where he went close to taking a Group 1. If in similar form to his last couple of runs he will take this.
It doesn’t look a deep race for the level and I think Bashkirova could be the main danger in a bit of an easier race than when last seen at Royal Ascot and should go well. Alflaila obviously reopposes again and is improving himself but he has enough to find with the selection and I just can’t see him reversing that form. Sonny Liston ran well in third at Goodwood but still needs more.
Sandown 2.05
This looks between the top 2 in the betting and I prefer FONTEYN at the bigger price. She beat Grande Dame at York back in May before being highly tried when fourth in the Nassau behind Nashwa. That wasn’t a bad run at all especially as she was keen enough early. If she can settle better I’d be confident she can confirm that form with Grande Dame.
Obviously the Gosden filly stepped forward again to beat Oscula here last time. That is very solid form so she is definitely the danger. Of the rest the thriving Nizaaka could run into a place. She won easily again last time and while this is tougher she is likeable so could run well.
Plenty of those at the top of the market represent trainers that are great at targeting their horses at these sort of races. No more so than Andrew Balding who has won the last two renewals and has a great chance again in SOUL STOPPER. He has thrived since stepping up to these longer trips including an easy win at this distance last time out. He has plenty more to come and will run well in a competitive race.
Wild Crusade is clearly a classy sort but does give plenty of weight away. The main danger is likely the favourite at the time of writing, Soulcombe who has been progressing with racing and will be bang there but I am happy with the selection at double the price. Al Nafir is also worth a mention with more to come now handicapping.
Sandown 2.40
Clearly some very nice horses lining up for this but I really liked what I saw from DESERT HERO when he won on debut at Haydock. He asserted in good style for a horse with so little experience and he is only going to improve. The second Captain Winters won his next start so the form has been nicely franked since as well. I think this Sea The Stars colt could potentially be a group horse in time.
Silver Knott was behind Chaldean on debut at Newbury and improved to win convincingly at Kempton last time. He looks one of the main dangers. Defence Of Fore also made a winning debut and will progress but this is a hot renewal.
York 3.00
This looks a wide open renewal and I think the Lennox Stakes holds the key to this with plenty of these taking on each other again. I actually like the horse who fared worse that day in SACRED. She ran a cracker from a bad draw and was coming home well at the end. She just had a lot more ground to make up compared to the front 3. She is lightly raced this season and that freshness could tell here with York a track less likely to see her too far back and she must go close.
Kinross just lost out in the Lennox and is the one I favour to run a big race again. Rohaan could also be a big danger with his form looking even better with Highfield Princess taking the Nunthorpe so impressively on Friday.
York 3.35
Earl Of Tyrone has been all the rage for the Ebor and I’ll be hoping he runs well for Paddy Twomey but no value in his price. I really like CANDLEFORD at double-figure odds. He blew rivals away to win by 6 lengths at Royal Ascot in June and I just think after such a big effort that run at Newmarket came too soon where he clearly didn’t give his running. This step up in trip could really suit and unlock further improvement so if he bounces back he is just too big in the betting.
Gaassee won four in a row before being denied a run in the Old Newton Cup where he finished third. He is still improving and should run a nice race. Alfred Boucher takes his chance after winning here on Wednesday and a 4lb penalty might not stop him going close so he also has to be respected.
York 4.10
It doesn’t get much easier after the Ebor with a 20-runner handicap to follow it up. I have two in here with my main bet being SPANGLED MAC. He has been in great form for George Boughey landing a 4-timer before bumping into Adaay In Asia who franked the form winning at the track this week. He still looks like he has more to come and can run a big race again.
The other I am going to take a chance on here is LETHAL LEVI who has to be worth a few quid at a massive price. He let supporters down at Goodwood last month but that might be worth forgiving. He was progressive profit to that and could be a big player here if bouncing back. Regional, Commanche Falls and Tabdeed don’t have a lot between them as they showed at Goodwood and I think the former might reverse that form and rates the main danger.
York 4.45
This does look like a decent chance for ROCKET RODNEY to get back in the winners enclosure after running a huge race at Goodwood to be done late by a horse in Trillium who could be very good. I don’t see anything with the potential of that rival and if he is in the same form as either of his last 3 runs he wins this.
The danger comes from Ireland in Paddy Twomey’s Treasure Trove who has ran really well in some very good races over this trip and she will go well here. Of the rest Bolt Action could fill the placings with some solid form to his name including a run at Royal Ascot behind the selection.
