Beverley 1.30
Following some good runs it was no real surprise to see MAJESTIC win like he did at Pontefract last time. He won comfortably and now sent handicapping should have more to offer. A mark of 82 will likely prove lenient and he look good value to turn over this favourite Outrun The Storm.
The latter beat Dashing Dick at Leicester back in June and has run two solid races since but he does have a habit of finding one too good and I wouldn’t want to take short odds. On speed figures It Just Takes Time shouldn’t be ignored either but I guess he is off a career-high mark and will need more in this deeper race.
Goodwood 1.50
A wide open renewal of this with a slight preference for QUEEN OLLY. She won on debut before running really well in some decent company. Her runs behind Mawj and Meditate read well in the form book and I think she will have more to offer stepping-up to 7 furlongs. If she does improve she will go close and 7/1 looks a generous price given 9 runners.
The favourite at the time of writing is Fairy Cross who rates the main danger. She really improved over 7 furlongs and if in the same form as when last seen won’t be far away. At a bigger price Ivory Madonna in first-time cheekpieces could fill the placings.
Post Impressionist has been a massive letdown for me. I was surprised he was sent off odds-on at Chester though as he is a big scopey horse who was always going to struggle around that tight track. When I say he has been costly to follow I more mean his Royal Ascot run where he found absolutely zilch off the bridle. He has already been backed into favouritism here and wouldn’t be for me. I prefer KITSUNE POWER for Roger Varian. He beat a good yardstick in Royal Aviation at Nottingham and bumped into Ajero last time. Plenty in favour again.
Of the rest Wait To Excel kept pulling out more to win at Ripon and a 5lb rise looks fair so he might be the danger. Box To Box ran yesterday and is unlikely to take up this engagement. Knightswood still has a future especially with this track likely suiting better but needs to show more before I can back him.
Goodwood 2.25
I was on ORBAAN just over a week ago at York and I see no reason not to be on him again. He flew home last time after taking a while to find a gap and the winner had gone. He won here at the end of July and if the amount of racing doesn’t catch up with him he will be hard to beat here. I suppose the downside is he is currently favourite but it’s pretty clear he is going to run his race.
Clive Cox has won this twice in the last 3 years and Ascot Adventure I would expect to be laid out for this and will likely outrun his price. Of the rest Tacarib Bay has to be a danger back at 7 furlongs with some give in the ground.
Beverley 2.40
This is a wide open renewal of the Beverley Bullet so it won’t surprise you that I’ve taken two against the field. KORKER won impressively at York back in May and a slow start cost him at Royal Ascot. He was again slowly into stride when third to Royal Aclaim last month and if he can get away on terms I think he could have a major say here.
Tis Marvellous is respected but he needs a bit to prove. At a bigger price BURNING CASH is worth a second look. His mind has been elsewhere the last twice but his wins at Doncaster make him of some consideration here and he is around 20/1 at the time of writing.
Goodwood 3.00
If you want a race that currently sums up the state of horse racing in Great Britain this race does a pretty good job. A Group 3 with £100,000 in prize money, 4 runners and only 1 real solid Group horse in here. Pink Fire Lilly is rated just 64. HOO YA MAL is the likely winner as the odds suggest. The Derby second is rated 18lb plus ahead of this field and unless it gets really tactical he wins.
Perfect Alibi is a danger if she improves again from her last run where she took a big step forward. I do like her as a filly going forward but she has obviously been thrown in at the deep end here. The other two have a lot to find on all known form at ratings and are hard to recommend.
Newmarket (July) 3.15
I’d go as far to say as GREAT AMBASSADOR is my biggest cliff horse ever. I still think he is capable at the top level but he is running out of chances. He finds himself in a Listed race here and in these calmer waters I expect his class to show. He was only beaten narrowly in the Stewards’ Cup last time and if getting the splits could be a class above this field. If he brings his best then 10/3 could look a lovely price.
The danger looks to be the thriving Summerghand whose name annoys me but hard to argue with the effort he produced to win at York last time. He won this 12 months ago and looks the biggest danger to the selection. Daneh is obviously unexposed and is another one that needs respecting.
Goodwood 3.35
Like the last race at Goodwood we have a small field but at least this is competitive. MUTASAABEQ was last seen in the Summer Mile at Royal Ascot just being beaten by Chindit which looks the best form in here. He is the top rated in here and has had a relatively light campaign and should take this before going onto late season targets. He is pretty short but at the same time the most likely winner.
The form from York last week looks the key to the dangers with Finest Sound running a huge race behind the classy Alfaila and Escobar running a cracker in a hot handicap. If both of those are good to go after last weeks runs they will have a say in this but hard to know where they stand.
