Ayr 1.20
At this point in the season plenty have been on the go a long time and it sometimes pays to go with a lightly raced sort or a horse that has been off for over month saved for this race. REDARNA fits the bill. He was last seen running well at Ascot in a similar race off this same mark. The yard have clearly targeted this and with a course and distance win to his name he will go close here at decent each way odds.
Koy Koy is the main danger in a first-time hood. He has scope for improvement at this trip and a repeat of his last run would see him go close but not much juice in his price. Dityoldtown ran a cracker at big odds denied a head at Donny and is also noted here.
Newbury 1.40
I’m surprised SISKANY isn’t clear fav for this as I think people have forgot how good this horse is. If you look at his form when winning the Old Rowley Cup he had Farhan and Candleford trailing in behind and was a good winner that day. That race is stacked full of future winners and while he wasn’t at his best in soft ground at Newbury he looked good winning in Dubai back in the winter and has gone well fresh before.
Dubai Future is another with strong form in the book and looks the danger. He beat Cadillac easily at Royal Ascot but needs to bounce back from that last run where he was beaten 4 lengths by Sir Busker. Kemari best of the rest as he has been consistent recently.
Although I think it will be closer than the market suggests between PHANTOM FLIGHT and Royal Champion he looks the right favourite. He has won 3 of his last 4 with his only defeat in that period coming behind the classy New London. I was really taken by his last run at York where he pulled clear impressively (was my Notebook that day). The logical step is a race of this calibre and he is the one to beat.
Royal Champion is a danger to all of these if in the same form as when he won at Epsom or his third placed finish in a Group 3 at Windsor last time. I am not sure they will go fast enough for Euchen Glen to be effective with Marie’s Diamond most likely to fill top 3.
Newbury 2.15
I was really impressed with the way MANACCAN won at Doncaster last time despite being a bit edgy in the prelims. He is firmly on the upgrade and deserves another crack at Group level now. His speed figure was very solid last time too and while this is tougher granted I think he is worthy of his place. He has won 2 of his last 3 and looks a sprinter to keep on side. He has a good attitude and it’s hard to find many chinks in his armour.
Tis Marvellous is a very talented yardstick and he was back to winning ways at Beverley last time. His best form is at Ascot but he should still be respected here and might be the danger. At a huge price Method might surprise a few and hit the frame.
Ayr 2.30
The Silver Cup is always just as hard to call as the main race later in the day. Tim Easterby has a great record in the race and SNASH looks a solid bet in a race of this nature. He won over the course and distance two starts back of just 2lb lighter. He was unlucky on his last run at Ripon finding trouble in-running and will be coming home fast and late here. No surprise to see him featuring near the top of the betting.
EMPEROR SPIRIT interests me getting the draw of 1 and he looks like one of the only horses in a lower draw that wants to go forward so could just fly off the front with the speed mainly drawn high in this race. Asadjumeirah is a danger in first-time cheekpieces.
Newbury 2.50
I was given a good word for SHOULDVEBEENARING in the sales race at York last month and was lucky enough to be there to roar him home. He did really well to win there as had enough to do even at the furlong pole. He likely improved again to win the 2YO Trophy at Ripon last time and that is very good form with Bolt Action. That horse ran well yesterday too. If he progresses again he could win this.
Sakheer was obviously impressive at Haydock but he is up against better horses here and I’m surprised at just how short he is in the betting. Charyn is a colt I still like despite defeat last time and I can see him running a nice race as well.
Ayr 3.05
I have been waiting for QUEEN ME to run again since seeing her at York. It was only her second run but she only lost out by a neck in a Group 2. She will be improving all the time and already rates the best horse in the race. If she is in the same form or even better form she will win this before stepping back up to better races. She is by Dubawi so is obviously bred to be smart and I can see her winning this impressively.
Bonny Angel is the main danger after winning her last two runs in handicaps. She is well worth a try at this level but may still have a bit to find with the selection. It doesn’t look a deep contest for a Group race and the selection looks rock solid.
Newbury 3.25
With 3 wins from 4 starts WARREN POINT looks a horse to keep firmly on side. He ran on strongly to win at Goodwood when last seen in July and that visual impression was backed up by the clock. The third Migdam and fourth Vee Sight both look promising so while his stablemate Blue Trail who finished second has let the form down since I wouldn’t be too concerned as I think it was quite a decent race.
He is up 8lb but seems to be getting better all the time and there is a strong likelihood he’ll win this before going on to compete in pattern races. He is unbeaten over this trip (3-3) and there is plenty to like again.
Sea The Casper is my idea of the main danger. He is also 3 from 4 and the time he was beaten at Ascot there was a positional bias. He is an improver and should run well too. Ottoman Fleet was highly tried at Royal Ascot and will find this much easier.
Ayr 3.40
This looks as competitive as ever so it won’t surprise you that I am backing two in this. COMMANCHE FALLS rarely runs a bad race even off a mark of 109. He went close at York after winning the Stewards’ Cup again at Goodwood the time before that. He has won over course and distance and should run a big race again. I’m pleasantly surprised to see him at 12/1 to be honest as I thought he’d be at least a couple of points shorter.
At a bigger price LUCKY MAN could run a big race with P J McDonald onboard. He rides these big handicaps very well and has a horse who is in top form. He was freshened up between his second at York before his win last time. He is improving all the time.
Khanjar is rightly popular and has thrived in handicaps for William Haggas. He will run his race but is too short in a race of this nature. Last years winner Bielsa could go close again now dropped back down to this company and is now just 1lb higher than last year.
