Aintree 1.30
A really competitive handicap to kick off the card at Aintree with plenty of improving sorts in here. My main bet in the race is TIGER JET who improved plenty after a summer on the Flat. He won by 10 lengths at Hexham and likely has a lot more to over at this trip and will go well here.
At a bigger price MY BOBBY DAZZLER off a mark of 127 appeals as he ran well at Cheltenham off 132 after a very good win over course and distance last year. He has more to offer over 3 miles and looks a solid each way bet. There are a few big dangers including Thirtyfourstiches who has won 4 of his last 5 runs and Willaston who is at his best over this trip.
Aintree 2.05
This is wide open and I’m going to take a chance on CLOTH CAP for Jonjo O’Neill. We all know what this horse is capable of when on form and while he was pulled up in the Grand National he remains lightly raced for his age. He reportedly bled the last day so if bouncing back from that having been given a chance by the handicapper he could go very well in this. He goes well fresh and appeals more than most in here.
If The Cap Fits is back over fences now and has run well fresh before so following a wind op it’s no surprise to see strong support for him here on debut for David Pipe. Wishing And Hoping will go off the front again and won this last year but is 7lb higher. If he gets an easy lead he also has to be feared.
The two at the top of the market look to have it between them on all known form with the edge going to THE FRIDAY MAN for Gordon Elliott who won this race last year. He has won 4 of his last 5 and looks to be improving all the time. The level of his win at Navan last time would be good enough to go close let alone the natural improvement he likely has to come.
Ambitious Fellow is the danger after a nice prep run for this where he won at Listowel. That was his best run to date so he could be on the up but will need to be to beat the selection. Of the rest Plains Indian is most likely to fill the top 3.
Aintree 2.40
My NAP won again yesterday so I am now eyeing up a HAT-TRICK of winners on Sunday. I’m going to head to Aintree where HITMAN might be up to making a winning return. He ran some big races in defeat last season most notably when second to Fakir D’oudairies in the Marsh Chase. He briefly put up a big challenge to the eventual winner before keeping on. He won’t mind conditions and given he is just a 6yo it would be no surprise to see him improve again this season.
The wind op should help and I get the impression Paul Nicholls is anticipating a big run. Do Your Job is another who goes well fresh so looks the obvious danger. I’ll be very surprised if they aren’t the pair fighting this one out.
Limerick 3.00
She was exciting to follow last season and will be again this year with Gordon Elliott with plenty of high praise for QUEENS BROOK leading into the season. She was second in the Mares’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival which is the best form on offer here. She is rated at least 8lb clear of the field and if ready for her first run she wins this.
The danger would be Heaven Help Us who was behind the selection at Cheltenham by 6 lengths and would really have to step forward in order to trouble one of the future stars of the mares division.
Aintree 3.15
The lightly raced PEKING ROSE could be primed to strike here for Fergal O’Brien. He impressed winning by 11 lengths at Newbury in soft ground last year and ran some good races in defeat after. He was only seventh over C&D when last seen but that was a Grade 3 and the form looks solid having been well advertised since. He has had a wind op and looks potentially well handicapped here. He should relish conditions and even as competitive as this is I think he will go close with the yard already firing.
Onemorefortheroad is an honest type who should give his running but I think is better suited by 2 miles and might just find something staying on better. A Different Kind has some good form in the book and will find this easier so also has to enter the mix along with Wilde About Oscar though he needs to bounce back.
Limerick 3.35
It may be a 16 runner field but it doesn’t look as competitive as some of these Grade A handicaps in Ireland. DONKEY YEARS looked pregressive when stepping up to 3 miles last season and I suspect there is more to come. He had a prep run at Listowel over a shorter trip and he will benefit from the fitness boost here at his preferred distance. J P McManus has a few in here but this one very much looks his best chance of a winner.
Ain’t That A Shame is the main threat after putting in a poor run to finish down the field at Cheltenham this looks like a much easier race to bounce back in. He will prefer the drop back to 3 miles and give the selection something to think about if near fully fit.
