Down Royal 1.30
There is a lot of potential on show in our first race live on ITV Racing on Friday but perhaps none more so than THE MODEL KINGDOM for Noel Meade. This likeable mare was 3-3 in bumpers and made a winning hurdling debut at Tipperary last month. She travelled so strongly throughout and did it with a ton in hand. It is hard to judge her on that as this will be a lot tougher but she is clearly quite exciting.
Sea Moon mare Nikini is also going the right way having made it 2-2 over hurdles at Listowel when last seen in September. She is the pick of Paul Townend so should give the selection something to think about. Carrigmoorna Queen best of the rest in a good race.
Exeter 1.50
This is fiercely competitive and while last year’s winner Martha Brae has to be respected I do quite like the chances of THE HEIGHT OF FAME now she is on a roll. Her winning run started as Fontwlel last season where she went back-to-back. She made an encouraging return dead-heating at Newton Abbot in September and up 5lb likely has more in the locker yet. She will strip fitter and should relish this test.
Whisky Express improved to win at Newton Abbot back in March and on handicap debut is another mare that brings potential to the table. She should be bang there with improvement on the cards. Mulberry Hill is another one that should get competitive.
I’m surprised PIED PIPER and Fil Dor are so close in the betting here as I’d have the former much shorter. He won stylishly at Cheltenham despite pulling quite hard early and is clearly still improving. His form from last season is obviously very strong and I know he was behind Fil Dor in the Triumph but there was only a neck in it and he has a fitness edge here. He will get a nice toe in from the latter and is hard to get away from.
Fil Dor still has an exciting season ahead himself and Gordon Elliott will just be hoping for a nice run on reappearance. It is his first start for 188 days so I don’t see Davy Russell being overly hard on him when he does come of the bridle.
Exeter 2.25
This race never attracts a big field for some reason and we just have 3 runners this year. THYME HILL makes his debut over fences after falling short at the top level over hurdles last season. It looks the logical step and he is quite clearly the one they have to beat here. He is well clear in the ratings (24lb better than his next rival). With a clear round of jumping he will take this before going on to better things.
Paul Nicholls has won the last two renewals of this with Enrilo and Threeunderthrufive and Flash Collonges rates the main danger and should reverse the form with Press You Luck who has to give weight to both of his rivals here.
Down Royal 2.40
This is a really competitive handicap chase but a chance is taken on the improving GEVREY for Gordon Elliott. He built on an encouraging third to Jeremys Flame to beat a subsequent winner in Optional Mix at Limerick. He is up 6lb but with that form working out so well that could be lenient as that was a career best last time and he likely has more to offer yet. He will be ridden quietly and will look to stalk them through.
The market possibly has this spot on with The Greek the main danger. He also clocked a career best winning by a street at Perth last time and if he runs to that sort of level again here he should be competitive. Gladiatorial is also in form so has to be respected.
Exeter 3.00
Given how lightly raced he is there could be more to come from KILLER KANE this season for Joe Tizzard. He impressed winning well at Kempton before following up at Sandown back in March. He ended the campaign with a good third to Sam Brown and Shan Blue at Aintree and if he is fit enough here he could be a danger to all. He still has plenty of scope from a handicapping perspective off a mark of 130 and should run very well.
Pileon is quite a big price here but he does tend to need his first run of the season. He didn’t show a great deal over fences previously but it’s still early days so he might take to this discipline yet. Minella Buster and Sizable Sam are also noted in opposition.
Exeter 3.35
Despite having just 5 runners this is pretty competitive and I have it between THIRD TIME LUCKI and War Lord. I have sided with the former as he is so consistent over 2 miles (form figures of 113123). Carrying 10 stone 11 is perfect here to kick off his season before competing back at the top level in Grade 1s later in the season. He will have a good pace to aim at and is the most likely winner in the field.
War Lord will be well suited if it gets really soft here and with Joe Tizzard in good form he has to be a danger to all. Greaneteen is giving so much weight away it is hard to be confident on the 2020 winner even if his trainer is in unbelievable form.
