The opening game sees the 2nd ranked team Belgium as they take on Canada. The last time Canada appeared at a World Cup was back in 1986. It’s the second longest gap between appearances in the finals tournament among teams taking part in this year’s showpiece, after Wales’ 64 years. It will be interesting to see how good they are but will have to play so well to match Belgium's class.
Even without Romelu Lukaku I’m expecting this Belgium side to have too much for Canada. They were the top scoring side in Russia, netting 16 times on their way to a third-place finish. Since losing their final group game in 1994 against Saudi Arabia they are unbeaten in all 12 of their group stage games at the FIFA World Cup and they’ve won their last 7 straight. Only Brazil have beaten that with eight consecutive wins from 1986-1994 and again in 2002-2010.
Canada qualified for Qatar by finishing first place in CONCACAF scoring the most goals in the final round of qualifying and conceding the fewest. After an opening draw with Honduras they won their last six home matches by an aggregate score of 16 to 2. Cyle Larin was their leading scorer so he is one to watch out for.
