Newbury 12.10
I’ve been waiting to see expensive purchase JET POWERED make his debut over hurdles for Nicky Henderson. He was purchased for a whopping 350,000 guineas after winning an Irish point and they have made no secret how excited they are about him starting out. He has had a wind op in preparation and the yard have a good record in this. They targeted Jonbon at it last year and have also won it with the likes of Son Of Camas and Jenkins.
Dan Skelton won this back in 2020 with My Drogo and looks to have the main danger in Ittack Blue. He is by Coastal Path and cost 310,000 guineas after winning an Irish point by 16 lengths in the spring. He should be a nice prospect in time.
Newbury 12.45
Balco Coastal is very short here for a horse that lacks experience over fences. He was runner-up in a point at the start of his career and obviously reached a decent level over hurdles but might be worth opposing. DATSALRIGHTGINO really impressed at Chepstow and showed what an engine he had drawing clear to win by 7 lengths at the line. He is improving with experience and while this is tougher he might be worth chancing.
Frere D’armes bettered anything he had previously achieved over hurdles to win impressively on chase debut at Kempton. That form has been franked so he has to be respected in opposition. He is 8lb higher (2lb out the weights) so does need more.
I know Paul Nicholls has won this for the last two years with Bravemansgame and last year with Stage Star so Stay Away Fay has to be respected but the market hasn’t missed him so there is little value in backing him at 2/1 in a race as open as this. I prefer EGBERT at an each way price. This horse ran well in a couple of bumpers last season and returned with an encouraging debut over hurdles at Warwick. If he improves he will get involved.
Of the rest Russian Ruler made a bright start winning a bumper on debut at Warwick and while he has been beaten twice over hurdles he has had a wind op and should have more to offer. Heezer Geezer also deserves a mention after a good start over hurdles at Aintree.
Newbury 1.55
It was good to see STAGE STAR bounce back to form on his comeback run at Warwick. He was a horse I held in high regard before running poorly and Cheltenham and Aintree. Since then he has had a win operation and switched to fences. Both seem to have got the best out of him with his win at Warwick as easy as you like. He will likely be fitter for the run and is the one they all have to beat here.
Beauport is the main danger after a good chase debut beating a solid field. As a result he has to carry a penalty here which is why the selection will likely beat him. Of the rest Camprond unseated on chase debut but is entitled to bounce back and could run well.
Newbury 2.30
There might only be 6 horses heading to post for this handicap chase but it is fiercely competitive. I like the chances of KILLER CLOWN especially at the odds as I thought he’d be a bit shorter. I expect him to come on plenty for that reappearance third at Market Rasen and even off a mark this high I think he can get seriously competitive. There should be a lot of pace on here so a patient ride may well pay dividends.
3 or 4 dangers probably just about headed by Numitor. We know he goes particularly well fresh and he could still have more to come especially over this trip. Beakstown is a bit of a bridle merchant but is at least down in class so should be involved for a long way.
Newbury 3.05
This looks like a really open renewal of this race. I usually like my horse to have had a prep-run as the trends suggest. PROSCHEMA has had two runs recently and clearly benefitted from his fitness at Wetherby last time beating Thomas Darby by 10 lengths. He carries more weight here but I think he has more to come over this trip based on that easy win last time and will go close.
It is good to have star stayers Champ and Paisley Park back this season with both having their first run since April here. They might just need the run but if either are near their peak fitness they will be lively dangers. Dashel Drasher would also have to be respected.
Newbury 3.40
It was a shame to see both Padleyourowncanoe and SHEARER crash out and unseat at Cheltenham last time. They were both strongly fancied in the betting but failed to finish the race. With Padleyourowncanoe falling and causing the selection to unseat I am switching allegiances this time around. Paul Nicholls’ 6yo was still going well and despite carrying a big weight here could be a horse to keep on side with more to come.
Padleyourowncanoe is respected but I don’t like backing horses off the back of falls and he has a bit to prove despite seemingly being well handicapped. Steal A March can be a tricky ride but if fit enough is another one that could get involved here.
Newbury Lucky 15
Newbury 12.45 Datsalrightgino
Newbury 2.30 Killer Clown
Newbury Win Double
With two short priced horses I can’t see beat on Friday I have also included them to make a nice double. This looks a bit of a banker bet to me. Pays 9/4!
