Portugal kick-off their World Cup campaign against Ghana who are the lowest-ranked side at the tournament so Cristiano and co will be very hopeful of a winning start here. Portugal were knocked out in the Round of 16 stage after losing 2-1 to Uruguay in Russia but look to have a great chance of going deep in Qatar.
Portufal qualified for their 8th World Cup after finishing runners up behind Serbia in their qualifying group, before beating North Macedonia 2-0 in a play-off match. Whereas Ghana qualified for their 4th World Cup after topping their qualifying ground, before winning on away goals in a 1-1 aggregate draw over a 2 legged play-off match with Nigeria.
Portugal are without Diogo Jota which is a big miss and Ghana have minimal attacking threat so I can see this being fairly cagey. I think Portugal will go ahead and then look to see it out. With Ghana likely pushing on late that may pave the way for another breakaway goal for Portugal which is why I’ve come down on 2-0 as my score prediction. It will be interesting to see how Ronaldo fares with Manchester United terminating his contract but I can see it motivating him even more and make no mistake this squad has plenty of quality and perhaps isn’t as reliant on him as it once was.
One of the angles I’ll be going for in this is cards with the ref Ismael Elfath averaging 4.82 cards per game in the MLS. With the likes of Joao Palhinha providing a bit of muscle for Portugal and then tricky players like Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes inviting fouls it could pay to include a couple in the Bet Builder.
