After two late goals against Senegal I really thought the Netherlands were going to head into that clash with Ecuador all guns blazing but it wasn’t to be. They scored early thanks to a wonder strike from young Gakpo but other than that rarely threatened. Ecuador started the second half on the front foot and equalised thanks to their star man Enner Valencia. In the end both sides seemed to settle for that draw and in hindsight it does suit the Netherlands as they only really require a draw against Qatar now.
Qatar have lost both games and by a two-goal margin. They were abysmal against Ecuador and did at least put up a bit more of a fight losing 3-1 to Senegal but they are just so vulnerable at the back. They have already conceded the joint-higher number of group goals by a host nation and if you couple that with the fact The Dutch have scored 33 goals across 10 World Cup qualifiers it is hard to see how they will find a way out of this.
The Netherlands will be looking for a convincing win here to top the group and head into the knockout stages in top shape. They have won all four of their World Cup matches against Asian sides, scoring 11 goals and conceding just once so they look worth a good play on the handicaps. Gakpo looked bright and he has now been directly involved in at least one goal in his last five appearances for the Netherlands scoring 4 goals. He should enjoy this and is worth backing too.
